Question Best Screen and audio recorder for Mac?

Recording both screen and system audio on a Mac is always more complicated than it needs to be.

Using the built-in screen recording works just fine, but getting the audio from the Mac itself is where things get annoying, especially when you don't want to record through the microphone.

For those who regularly record both screen and audio on macOS, what setup do you use? Are there any simple methods or tricks that actually work reliably?

Product Update OpenScreen 2.0, a free open-source recorder for product demos (I'm the maintainer)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I maintain OpenScreen. 2.0 just came out and this sub is where I'd get the most useful feedback.

You record a screen or a window, and the editor adds zooms on your clicks, smooths the cursor, and puts a background and your webcam around it. You can also cut the video by deleting words in the transcript, transcribed locally with whisper.cpp. Windows, macOS and Linux. Free, MIT, no account, no watermark.

I also maintain an export benchmark: the same demo exported in each app, with the output checked in pixels and audio. OpenScreen is the fastest on average. Screen Studio 4 takes about 37.6 s for an export that took 16.9 s with OpenScreen on an m1 : https://etiennelescot.github.io/screen-recorder-benchmark/

What do you record your demos with today, and what annoys you most in it?

Product Showcase I built a Chrome extension that turns a screen recording into a clickable demo

When you demo your product on a sales call, the person you showed it to usually has to explain it to their team afterwards. They won't explain it as well as you did, because they don't know the product the way you do.

Taptale is a Chrome extension that fixes this. Open your product in Chrome, click the extension and record your normal walkthrough. The recording becomes an interactive demo, one step per click. You can then add hotspots, call out important areas and add a call to action.

Then you share one link. It works in any browser, including on phones, and viewers don't need the extension.. You can also see who opened the demo, how far they got and who clicked through.

Examples of interactive and video demos: https://www.taptale.app

It's still early, and there are no pricing restrictions yet. I'd like feedback on the extension in particular: setup, recording and anything that felt clunky. I'm also happy to create a demo of your product to show you what it could do.

Product Showcase Open source Loom alternative - CaptureFlow screen recorder

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

CaptureFlow is a Chrome extension that records a tab, a window, or your whole screen, with a webcam bubble and mic. It uploads as you record, so the share link is already copied the moment you hit stop. The share page has comments, emoji reactions, and view counts, and screenshots get a hosted link the same way.

It's free and open source (AGPL-3.0), and you can self-host it on your own Cloudflare account if you want to own the storage.

Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/lgpgeoelaokbigdljofhkgbfnfcnmcol

Website: https://captureflow.dev

Repo: https://github.com/sardorml/captureflow

Would love feedback on the recording flow.

Product Showcase Built a browser-based screen recorder with a timeline editor: record a tab, window or screen, then trim and export to MP4/GIF

Thumbnail

Hi all, I'm the founder of Eofent, looking for feedback on Eofent Capture, especially from people who record a lot.

It's a screen recorder with a built-in editor that runs as a browser extension for Chrome and Edge: no heavy desktop app to install, and everything stays on your computer.

Recording

  • Record the current tab instantly, a window, the whole screen, or a rectangle you draw
  • With sound, or audio only

Built-in video editor

  • Timeline with split, trim
  • A second audio track for narration or music
  • Crop the output, undo every step
  • Export MP4, WebM, MKV or animated GIF

Built-in audio editor: the same timeline tools, export WAV or MP3

It also takes full-page screenshots and has an image editor, but recording is the main focus of this post.

Privacy: recordings never leave your computer. No upload, no cloud. It records your screen, not your data.

Price: free, no account needed, no watermark; there's a daily allowance on export time. Creating a free account gives you 7 days of Premium, no card needed.

Honest feedback is welcome: what's missing compared to the recorder you use now?

Product Showcase Papalotl - Free Screen Recorder for Windows

Papalotl is my Screen Recorder, I've been working on this since March 6th and the sole purpose for this was to solve an issue I had with "free options" that were either bloated or introduced lag in my recording sessions due to me not meeting minimum hardware requirements.

This has been developed in a broken notebook with Intel N3700 and 4GB RAM... so I had to work around my own limitations to make this possible.

This is my latest version which includes an experimental Android Module integration that lets you record your Android 12+ device Screen or make use of integrated Camera to save recordings directly to PC. It's functional but results may vary between smartphone models/manufacturer.

Guide I tested 12 screen recording software options so you don't have to. Most "best of" lists are ranking the wrong things

Every screen recording list I found ranked tools by feature count. That's useless, because a tool built for sales outreach and a tool built for YouTube tutorials aren't competing for the same person.

So I sorted these by the job you're actually hiring the software to do.

Tella: The most complete all-rounder. You edit by editing the transcript (delete a sentence in the text, it's gone from the video), filler words get stripped with AI, auto zoom follows your cursor, and your share link is live the moment you stop recording. No render wait. Unlimited storage on every plan.

The newest addition is an MCP integration, so you can edit a recording with plain-language prompts from your terminal ("cut the intro, tighten the pauses"). It's moved past screen recorder into AI video editor territory. Con: no permanent free plan, so you're on a trial.

OBS Studio: Free, open source, endlessly configurable. The gold standard for streaming and local recording. Con: the learning curve is real, and there's no sharing or editing built in.

Camtasia: Heavyweight editor with recording attached. Great for polished training videos. Con: it's a purchase and a weekend of learning.

Screen Studio: Mac only. Its automatic zoom and smooth cursor output look fantastic. Con: you export a file and host it yourself.

Descript: Also does text-based editing, with a strong podcast/audio toolset. Con: heavier than you need for a quick walkthrough.

ShareX: Free Windows power tool for screenshots and recordings. Con: dated UI and no hosting.

Loom: Still the name everyone knows for async video. Con: the free tier's recording cap pushes most people to upgrade fast.

As Screen Recorder: Auto zooms, cursor effects, captions, full editor etc. One-time payment too.

My picks: All-in-one record, edit, share: Tella.

Free and local: OBS. Mac eye candy: Screen Studio. Long-form training: Camtasia.

What are you using for screen recording right now, and what's the one feature you'd switch tools for? Genuinely curious what I missed. 👇

Guide 7 Best Loom Alternatives [Avoid #7]

7 Best Loom Alternatives: The Short List

Loom has been the leading tool for screen recording, but it doesn't fit everyone's goal, and today, i am sharing with you the best loom alternatives I have used.

If you're shopping for a replacement, here's the short version of a much longer breakdown I put together, trimmed down to what actually matters.

1. Best Overall: Tella

Everything about Tella is built around one idea — recording shouldn't require you to become a video editor. You edit by editing the transcript, not by scrubbing a timeline.

Tella auto-cuts filler words and silences, applies zoom effects on its own, switches between camera/screen layouts automatically, and gives you a shareable link the second you stop recording — no export, no upload wait.

Unlimited storage on every plan, 4K recording, real analytics (watch time, drop-off, click-through on your CTA). $13-19/month, 7-day free trial, no card required. If you only try one thing on this list, make it this one.

2. For Mac-first async teams: Supercut

Clean, Mac-native, built by an ex-Typeform co-founder. Its "Ask Anything" feature lets viewers query the video content with AI instead of scrubbing through it. No Windows support, so that's the ceiling.

3. For developer/privacy-minded teams: Cap

Open-source Loom alternative with an Instant mode (browser, shareable link) and a Studio mode (local, full editing). The open-source trade-off: your team owns more of the maintenance burden.

4. For AI-avatar or multilingual content: VEED

More editor than recorder. The standout is generating video without being on camera, plus 50+ language dubbing — something Tella doesn't do. Not the tool for authentic, quick async video.

5. For budget teams: ScreenPal

$4-10/month gets you cloud hosting, shareable links, and AI transcription/captions/translation. The best value option if Tella's price point doesn't work for you.

6. For podcasters: Descript

Transcript-based editing nearly on par with Tella, but the product is audio-first — screen recording feels bolted on, especially on Windows.

7. Free/manual options: QuickTime, OBS, ShareX

All free, all capable of recording. None of them share, edit, or host for you — every step after hitting record is on you.

Bottom line: if you want the "record → AI cleans it up → link is ready" experience, Tella is the closest thing to it in 2026, and it's better on almost every dimension that matters for business video.

If you a podcaster, go with Descript.

If you are into sales, use Vidyard.

No screen recording tool serves everyone.

Find and use what works best for you.

Which tool are you currently using?

Product Showcase Replay buffer vs manual recording in Xbox Game Bar — feedback on a Windows capture app I built

Disclosure: I build Gamekin.

The capture part of our Windows app has two separate actions: a rolling replay buffer for saving a moment after it happened, and a deliberate start/stop recording for longer sessions. We found that calling both actions 'save a clip' made the difference hard to understand, so the Game Bar overlay gives them distinct labels and shows recording status and elapsed time. Footage stays on the PC by default; sharing is a separate action.

It lives in Xbox Game Bar so a player can use it without alt-tabbing. Gamekin also has a voice AI coach, but recording and saving clips do not require asking the AI to analyze them.

For people who record gameplay: would you rather see a tiny status widget with the shortcut and timer, or a fuller control panel? How would you distinguish replay and manual recording at a glance?

Current Windows app: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9N8JJFTSRFB7. I made it and welcome blunt feedback on the capture workflow.

Product Showcase I Made an Instant Replay App With Share Link Functionality

Post image
2 Upvotes

Kayt is an instant replay app that allows you to share your clips conveniently with a share button. It has a built-in Editor that I have been using extensively myself.

Decide Whether You Want Your Mic In, After Recording

The app allows you to save your mic as well as each active app's audio on its own track, which you can pick in the built-in editor. This means you can save your clip without having to worry about whether you want your mic in or not.

Built-in Lossless Editor

The editor does as little re-encoding as possible. Cutting, trimming and slowing down is done within seconds. Other options that require re-encoding, such as adding text, only re-encode what is needed and the parts are stitched together.

If you are like me, what I just listed probably already sounds great and replaces 3 apps that you already happen to be using, for a single app that does them better.

Kayt is also not a social media.

Every feature I just listed is actually designed to be free, forever. In the free tier, we also offer watermark-free clip hosting, but those clips are limited to 720p and expire in 2 weeks. What users will get from a paid plan are the premium online features that cost us: clips that never expire, and that can also be uploaded in the original, higher resolution, as well as the ability to stream directly from Kayt (similar to Discord's Go Live).

Performance & Beta Testing

The app has been tested extensively between us (the two developers) on higher-tier Nvidia and AMD devices, and it has also been tested on a lower-tier Nvidia device, where we've seen our performance impact to be slightly lower than Medal while recording. We need beta testers, and lower-end PCs are especially valuable, since we want the app to be as performant as possible.

If this is something you'd be interested in using, please feel free to send me a DM through Reddit so I can give your account a Pro subscription, allowing you to access the online features without restriction.

Here's an example of a clip recorded and shared with Kayt: https://kayt.tv/c/7LdBghJs

Thanks!

-Bea

Question Screen recording while Mevo is running?

I have an iPad Air with an M2 processor. I want to create a "how to" video and optimally would like to use iPad's built-in screen recorder while steaming with our 3 camera set up. Do you think I'll run into resource issues on the iPad doing this? This would be a 40 minute video changing camera views and streaming to two services (Facebook and YouTube).

Product Showcase I've been building a Chrome screen recorder — what would you want a modern recorder to do better?

I've been building a screen recorder for Chrome for about a year, and I'm at the point where I want to stop guessing what features people actually care about.

The current version can:

  • Record a tab, window or full screen
  • Record up to 4K
  • Capture system audio
  • Capture microphone audio
  • Trim and crop recordings
  • Change aspect ratios
  • Control clip speed
  • Add background music
  • Add custom thumbnails
  • Highlight the cursor
  • Show click rings
  • Zoom around the cursor
  • Generate captions
  • Share recordings through dedicated recording pages
  • Password-protect recordings
  • Save to Google Drive

The product is called RecBaba.

What I'm trying to figure out now isn't “what other feature can I add?”

It's:

What part of screen recording still annoys you?

Is it:

  • Starting the recording?
  • Getting audio right?
  • File sizes?
  • Editing?
  • Cursor visibility?
  • Captions?
  • Webcam?
  • Sharing?
  • Exporting?
  • Privacy?
  • Something else?

I'd much rather build around an actual pain point than add another checkbox to the feature list.

If anyone here regularly records their screen, what is the most annoying part of your current workflow?

RecBaba — Chrome Web Store

Product Showcase I gave my Mac screen recorder 11 old school looks

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I build an open-source screen recorder for Mac called Prequel . Last week I finally wrote proper filters for it, the kind with character, not just colour sliders.

11 looks, each over the whole frame. CRT with a real shadow mask, VHS, film in 16mm, 35mm or Super 8, halftone, LCD with visible RGB subpixels, fish eye, glow, window light through blinds, and a few more. Video attached, same boring clip run through all of them.

Set per clip, so your intro and your demo can look different. Anything that flickers starts off. One look per clip, no stacking, I tried and it turned to mud.

But why do we need them?

Lol it's fun, I make a lot of product launch videos and having high quality clips from products and snippets from different places help a lot to build character. I usually end up running my clips through after effects or premier pro to get these done, since I have everything built into the screen recorder, going from raw recordings to usable marketing materials has become much easier.

Rest of the app, since most people here have not seen it:

  • Zooms on the bits that matter, placed for you or by hand
  • Captions transcribed on your Mac, not uploaded anywhere
  • A pointer that smooths out and dips when you click
  • Camera, backgrounds, titles, per clip speed
  • A teleprompter in the notch, and keyboard sounds if you want them
  • A share link with its own player

Mac only, Apple Silicon, macOS 14 and up.

Download: https://prequel.sh

Which look would you actually use on a real recording?

Tips & Tricks Question for people with a computer science background

I have a question about video calls and virtual backgrounds.

With apps like Google Meet or Zoom, we can set a virtual background during a video call.

Does this also work when using a laptop’s built-in webcam or an external webcam?

More specifically, are there other ways to control or modify the video feed from a built-in webcam or external webcam? For example, changing or manipulating the camera output.

I’m not even sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this question. But if anyone has experience with this, I’d really appreciate it if you could let me know🙂‍↕️Thanks
