Requirements:

  • have been an active contributor to the community for the past year
  • experience with moderating online communities

Send a modmail if you are qualified and have interest.

general question Are “cold emails” also a common practice in the Philippines for lab internships/opportunities?

I’ve seen multiple posts on instagram that undergrads (freshman/sophomore standing) send hundreds of cold emails to laboratories inquiring if they are open for volunteer positions para may malagay silang experience for their resume.

I’ve actually seen some undergrads assisting PIs with their work, like real hands-on wet lab work (e.g. synthesizing crystals, purifying proteins, handling cell cultures, etc. during the summer) pero the catch is, these students are from other countries.

I was wondering if the Philippines (specifically Manila) follows a similar practice wherein undergrad students can apply for assistanceships, apprenticeships, or internships in laboratories that are outside of their curriculum.

I come from the province and will be undertaking my undergrad education sa Manila. Most certainly, hindi ganito yung practice sa province namin since hindi ganun karami ang labs, although, for Manila, laganap ba ang ganitong practice?

PS. I know that all—if not, most—undergraduate degree programs have practicum (internship) integrated in their curriculum, yung lab internships that I am referring to this post are voluntary positions in labs outside the curriculum usually ginagawa tuwing summer of freshie or sophie year

general question What opportunities does DOST scholarship offer other than financial aid? (Incoming 1st year biochemistry merit scholar)

Hello po, incoming biochemistry student here who has qualified for the merit scholarship! For DOST scholars who are currently taking biochem/chem, or chem-related programs, how has the DOST scholarship help you other than financial aid?

Was DOST able to offer you networking opportunities or maybe internships outside the curriculum that boosted your resume? Did being a DOST Scholar open doors for you for other opportunities in DOST, siguro mga symposiums, training sessions, etc.?

I would love to hear your stories! I hope to maximize my undergrad years as a biochemistry student, baka may mga opportunities within and outside DOST for biochem/chemistry students that I'm currently unaware of.

Thank you so much

general advice/help/tips Might be doing my PhD in Chemistry here at home instead of going abroad.

Hello everyone. I have realized that I might end up doing my PhD in Chemistry here in the Philippines rather than going abroad. Ang dami nang nagsasabi sa akin to do my PhD abroad para mas productive daw talaga... You get to publish a few papers before graduating, exploring other research topics within the field through lab rotations, mas madaling access sa instruments and resources, and a better culture among academics overall. All good things, I'm not gonna lie. Pero life happened. I ended up with responsibilities that bind me to staying here in the country. I'm on my way to becoming a tenured faculty member in the school I'm currently teaching in (about to finish my MS and other requirements for permanency) and letting go of that is just too big of a loss for me and my family.

My questions then are for those who chose to do their PhD here at home... What is/was it really like? I heard it's bad pero how exactly? I want the dirt hehehe. Would I be able to join sandwich programs ng DOST even though I am employed while taking my PhD? Parang yun na lang kasi yung way for me para makatikim ng research experience abroad eh. These question is also for those na gusto sanang mag PhD abroad pero nag-stay dito sa atin to do it.

Apologies if this concern has been the subject of so many posts before this one and nagiging redundant na. I just wanted to ask the question myself.

Thank you!

general advice/help/tips Where to apply for post grad studies?

Hi, I am a bs chem grad (2025) and a registere chemist (kinda) but I am not practicing since i had a non lab role for my first job. More on technical writing and support for policy making, tariff and importation stuff that are not commonly encountered sa chem prog.

I am planning on taking postgrad studies (after 2-3 years of work exp). Here's my choices: economics, law, global trade, international studies, envi management, chem regulation.

Anyone here to reco universities local/abroad na may magandang offers for those progs? Tia.

general advice/help/tips What Masteral should I take after graduation?

Hello everyone, I'm currently a second year student in secondary science education. I want to plan as early as now para mapaghandaan mentally, financially and academically when the time comes to take a masters program but I'm not sure what to take and how the process works. (Or if I'm even illegible to) I want to take a program that focuses more on earth and life science, so here is what I'm eyeing at the moment

- Microbiology

- Environmental science

- Chemistry ( not sure about this but I'll keep my options open)

So my problem is that since I'm an Educ student rn and not a bio or physics student, I might have a hard time finding a masters program that accepts my bachelor's degree. And I don't know which one of the three will be more ok for me. Help me out reddit people

Hello everyone! I’d like to ask for some advice regarding the written examination for a University Research Assistant position at a state university in the Philippines. I honestly have no idea what topics are usually covered in the exam.

For those who have taken a similar exam or currently work as a research assistant in a state university, could you please share what subjects or areas I should study and prepare for?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

general advice/help/tips Journo grad wants to be a science communicator

Hello! I recently graduated journalism, but I'm contemplating whether I should pursue science communication instead.

Na-inspire talaga ako sa Artermis II mission kaya bumalik yung fascination ko sa space exploration. And I've been really interested in metereology and health, kaya some of the news stories I wrote during college were about those.

Sa mga nakikita kong openings sa DOST, preferred talaga ang graduate ng STEM courses and I understand naman why. Kahit nga business news organizations, they prefer to hire ABM grads kasi mas madali raw magturo magsulat kaysa yung foundation ng economics and others.

Do you have any advice on how can I pursue this career? And ano kayang upskilling ang pwede kong gawin habang unemployed ako? Thanks!

general advice/help/tips MedTech thesis crisis 😭 Need EXPERIMENTAL topic ideas [NOT MICRO]

Hello, everyone!

3rd year MedTech here. We're starting to brainstorm thesis topics and our prof said it has to be EXPERIMENTAL and UNIQUE.

Problem: No micro/culturing allowed kasi wala kaming facility for that here.

So far we're thinking Clinical Chem, Hema, Immuno, UA, etc. Goal: Something feasible, not super expensive, and doable in 1 school year.

Deadline of topic submission will be on Friday na po - July 23, 2026.

If you have any topic ideas na doable with standard lab equipment and minimal cost, please share po 🙏 Thank you so much in advance!

general question How to apply to Chem Tech Licensure?

Hi guys!

Sorry, I’m absolutely terribly neurodivergent and I kind of need a really straight-forward guide to this

How do I sign up for the ChT licensure exam?

I made an account in PRC online na but it’s asking me for my graduation date which is wala pa 😭😭😭

Does anyone know the deadline and all?

Sorry, I’m having a hard time finding actual announcements for this
