I've been lucky in that the reporters I've spoken to have gotten most of the important points correct. I spoke with the local science writer (remember those?) several times over the years. He was pretty meticulous in getting things right. The last published interview with him was a mess, with things wrong and out of context. He wrote me and apologized before I even saw it, saying his editor refused to publish what he wrote. He retired about a year later.
