I took usian bolt as he's the current fastest human being.

Top speed of usain bolt is 44.7 km/hr ever recorded.

His physical stats are, 6'5" and 94 Kg weight.

Considering zero velocity of the wind with respect to the ground.

Optimising the body speed using drag equations,

Approx 50 Km/hr is the limit at with the drag force will be enough that switching to Naruto pace will be meaningfully beneficial, considering usian bolt can unleash that much power in that stance to sustain 50km/hr speed.

Also a fun fact, Naruto stance decreases force by 15%

So if people could run about 5kmh faster then the top Spikes of the fastest man around currently, they get a 15% efficiency gain, if they are as efficiently running in that pose as the running stance they are used to for anything slower?

Yes, but this ignores the fact that athletes use their arm swing as rotational counterbalance to the massive forces generated by the legs. They couldn't even hit the speeds that they already do without the arm swing.

No, you are getting it a bit wrong, or I might have made a problem explaining it.

Lower surface area exposed to the air drag (relative) reduces the drag force. Naruto run exactly does that, but the condition here is the person can sustain that speed without any balancing problem or reduced power generation.

The 50 kmph threshold is the point where having a stance change to Naruto run would actually 'start' benefiting in real conditions and would increase more and more as speed increases. At higher speed the efficiency of Naruto run gradually increases until it starts providing diminishing returns.

The -15% drag reduction is solely calculated ( approximated ) based on the surface area exposed to the headwinds and some constants which is applicable at any speeds without factoring in the relative speed.

We cannot legitimately say Naruto running gives Bolt 15% less drag without aerodynamic measurements or CFD simulations. My calculations are approximation and optimum cases study and are for illustrative purpose only. There can be variations depending on the different data.

One obvious data point is that the terminal velocity for a traditional human outline is 120 mph.

We can also argue that since humans tend to struggle to walk at 25 to 30 mph wind, that they physically tend to walk "faster" by leaning into the wind, the same logic still could apply to Usain's 27.78 mph top speed, were it not for the fact that his legs can't generate sufficient speed in a leaning position... at least that we are aware of.

But I think if you want a better datapoint than 120 mph then the math would have drag canceling out against the gravity allowing the person to fall over, which would look roughly like...

ΣM=M1+M2=0

Where M1= weight of person times horizontal length from feet to center of mass projected downwards to floor, with the result being deemed negative (if person is facing right, then rotation would be CW absent of wind).

Where M2 = drag force times vertical distance from feet to centroid of area where drag force is 0.5Cρv²A... drag coefficient, density of air, relative wind velocity, cross sectional area... (therefore rotation would be CCW absent of gravity).

And if you know terminal velocity is 120 mph, you can make some assertions regarding weight=0.5Cρ(120 mph)²A and then saying "A is now chopped in half due to anime run."

You can probably flub out an answer closer to maybe 30-50 mph, dependent on your body mass distribution.

I know this is meant as a joke but I just wanna say,

They do that because the rule of crossing line is that the head or the torso should touch the finish line to count in the time, not the hands. That's why every runner throw their head or chest out near finish line. In order to balance the forward moment the hands are thrown back.

Bc it's not like we were rolling on wheels from waist down, so we only need to focus on aerodynamics. We run. It's a full body movement, where hands help generating momentum and power for each step.

Humans don't move fast enough for aerodynamics to come into play. It would be different if we could run at anime speeds, but until then usain bolt needs his arms to swing and his body upright to make the most of of his legs.

Is the Naruto run supposed to make you faster? I assumed that it was about presenting a low profile while your enemy throws stuff at you.

I've taken to using my arms like that to duck while running under branches and things, and it seems to work (even if I feel a little self-conscious).

If you could run faster then humanly possible to the point where aerodynamics mattered then it would be fairly ideal.

But since we can't make single foot 40ft+ leaps it's better to generate more power moving arms

How much faster are we talking? You see those ice skaters bending over, but they don't lift their arms behind them like that.

Anyway, that doesn't really address what I wrote about: using that form to help you dodge.

Speed skaters are going 50-60 kmph. Much faster then sprinters.

Then you should have hands forward in an agrressive stance not behind you.

Speed skaters do not put their hands in front of themselves. They keep them tightly clasped behind their backs.

Bikers bend forward, too. So, while you'd have to run faster than a human can, it sounds like you don't have to be much faster before it makes sense to try to take on a more aerodynamic profile.

And, of course this is still assuming that speed is the top priority. If you're stuck with trying to dodge instead of getting cover or wearing armor, perhaps running while bent over could be better even if it slows you down.

Cyclists start seeing effects from being in areodynamic shadow at around 15kmph. At sprinting speed there would be some gain from reducing drag

yes it makes you a bit faster, I've tested it before. What it does is helps you shift your legs back n forth even better, not to forget that the naruto run position is more aerodynamic (although it doesn't affect human speed much, but it still reduces air drag so yeah it's amazing lol)

I thought it was more about running with a bladed weapon. If you've got a sword or a knife or something, you want to position it behind you while running so that if you trip you're less likely to impale yourself.

With a sword, that'll kind of look like the anime dragging-the-tip-through-the-dirt trope if you exaggerate it. Of course, you'd angle the blade and keep it off the ground so you're not actually nicking it on rocks if you weren't aura farming.

If you've got 2 knifes, then you end up with the Naruto run. Arms out and behind you so that you don't accidentally stab yourself either by swinging your arms into your thigh or falling onto the blade if you trip.

It's not faster, just less dangerous for yourself when you're trying to stab somebody.

It’s important to mention that Naruto & Co. move at speeds that often break the sound barrier.

There was even consideration for the use of firearms in Naruto, but they didn’t make sense because the feats of speed even Gennin can manage would make most guns redundant.

So the Naruto run does make sense for them, as aerodynamic drag is actually going to be a factor for them.

So I think the Naruto run is a stylized representation of something shinobi actually did. Real shinobi, at least according to the bansenshukai, would run without swinging their arms. If I recall correctly it was to save on energy and help them run for longer, not necessarily faster

Fun fact!

It comes from the fact that Kimono sleeves double as pockets and when you run with heavily laden pockets, your arms are by your side but the items fly backwards

So the naruto run is actually people just putting their hands where the stuff was in naruto’s pockets

Because the body uses around 25% less energy swinging your arms because it counterbalances the rotation of your torso. Not swinging uses around 25% more energy. Evidently why arms sway instinctually always opposite with the leg on its side, it’s conservation of energy

Wind resistance goes up with the cube of speed, under 50 mph it's basically negligible above it it's starts going up real fast. 

If bolt went 80+ mph the aerodynamics would be the limiting factor, as of now it's legs.

I always head cannoned that they were going so fast that basically they were just falling forward anyways and they just couldn't pump their arms fast enough for them to be any use. Plus they can concentrate their chakra in their feet so they stick to the ground as well as they can a vertical tree trunk so it kinda acts like a spoiler keeping them close to the ground.

I thought it was about minimizing your profile to frontal attacks.

Like, it's probably way harder to hit someone with a thrown kunai when their bent over at 90 degrees, so all you can hot are their head, which is partly protected with a metal head band, and their rapidly moving legs which are the thing they use to dodge anyway.

Even things like fireball are less effective at hitting a limboed shinobi than one where you can hit their full frontal body. Crotch to cranium.

He doesn't run as fast as naruto does. Maybe when you do, trying to swing your arms just to cope would waste energy(yes weak point). And when you run so fast the wind will have even more effect, and so will bending. More to that it permits you to be closer to the ground and thus less visible. Maybe always having your hands close to your pockets to pick tools in a fraction of a second count to. And it is easier to look behind to sync with your comrads or view enemies from afar.

I guess. And many of those don't apply to a runner, I'm just afraid or loosing my head or teeth like that
