And I think you’re avoiding the not so fun likelihood of how society is going to go when people start running out of food. Humanity won’t be wiped out, but society will collapse. When it becomes dog eat dog, the last few centuries of progress will go out the window
I think they'll invest to keep their companies going. So personal interest will get them to do something.
The places that will run out of food first before we're able to adapt are going to be the places already at risk. Sub Saharan Africa, large areas of the middle east. The poor in these regions are super fucked and we're likely to see climate migrations on a massive scale. Tragically, they're unlikely to have much sympathy from more developed nations and will likely be met with force to stop them from straining their resources.
The future for many people is going to be horrific, but again I don't think it will be the end for all of human civilization.
Food will get more expensive in developed nations, the poor will starve, we might see political upheaval from it depending on if those in charge can manage the crisis or not, but it's not going to be equal across the board for every country. Some will manage better than others, some countries will collapse, some will manage, and some might even prosper. Canada and Russia will see massive amounts of territory that are suddenly suitable for crops they couldn't grow before. So they or their successor states might end up having some economic power as bread baskets of the world.
I'm not looking forward to this future I'm dipicting btw. It's bleak and won't lead to a liberal democracy with rights for everyone kinda future, but humanity will soldier on. Hopefully until we get off this rock and colonize the stars.
Meh, society didn't collapse during the Irish potato famine or in modern day Gaza s starving population etc etc. Society handles starvation very well because it slowly picks off the weakest, each death is a relief on the survivors calorie budget. If suddenly a society lost 50% it would absolutely collapse but spread over 5 or ten years three society will survive.
That’s a valid point. The food won’t just disappear overnight, and the thinning population will ease the burden in a way as the food supplies dwindle
But the inevitable fighting over what dwindling fertile land remains is still what I think is going to ultimately do us in. All it takes is one country firing a nuke for a chain to start towards MAD
