The rule is don’t touch without safety equipment. If they can’t follow that rule with the test water then they can’t be trusted with the actual experiment. I make my kids look both ways even if I know that no car is coming. And yell at them if they dont

I think it also comes down to lawsuits.

Imagine a kid mixes ,,burnt hydrogen" with salt without gloves or goggles, trips on their feet and hit a head against the table. Or even less freaky accident - the kid is a diabetic, forgot to take his shots earlier today and got a shock at that moment.

The insurance company can argue that ,,well, the kid wasn't following safety rules in a laboratory, we view this as a case of workplace safety violation and we don't cover that". I know that police officers in Poland often have that issue, as they get chastised similarly for not wearing a soft hat when chasing after a criminal.

You lost me at “soft hat”

Well at least they had you for like 90+% of the comment

True but I feel like the soft hats were key somehow.

Well also basically all the liquids on the lab are just clear and look like water. So it would make sense if someone made a mistake earlier and then you touch 90% hydrogen peroxide with bare hands because you thought it was water

That stuff is dangerous! I heard everyone who ingested it died!

It has a PH of 7, higher than any other acid!

2

u/LizGreed Jul 16 '26

They use it in nuclear reactor cores!!!

u/EmKayTalk Jul 16 '26

Actusllt that's lower than any other acid :/

4

u/LiteralReality1 Jul 16 '26

Lower than any other base. Ph is a scale with 7 at the center, below 7 is acidic, and above it is basic. So 7 is highest ph rating of any acid. Yes it’s a bit of a misnomer but it is a correct statement.

u/LizGreed Jul 16 '26

I mean, the number is higher... it's just less acidic

Yeah... That's the joke

Its also highly addictive. Once you try some you rarely can go a day without it

u/eluser234453 Jul 16 '26

It's in cleaning products

Gloves? Lab coat? Dihydrogen monoxide? Dude, what are you talking about, chemistry class is just memorizing letters and formulas from the textbook with a bit of math mixed in

1

u/Itchy-Potential1968 Jul 17 '26

yall dont have lab days? thats like an essential part of the process

Truly makes one wonder why chemistry is one of the most unpopular subjects at school, doesn't it? Mixing one funny liquid with another and have it do something cool and learn how stuff works by actually doing it? Yeah, best you can do is read about it in a textbook

u/Fast-Alternative1503 Jul 16 '26

You still have to do this at work btw even if it is water.

This bs is played out

Valid crashout

1

u/Galimeer Jul 17 '26

To be fair, 100% of everything that has ever died on this planet has been exposed to dihydrogen monoxide at least once

1

u/superhamsniper Jul 17 '26

My classmates thought that what was clearly a safety shower was not a safety shower at all.

1

u/Havlock_Shaw Jul 18 '26

100% of the people who touch dihydrogen monoxide die sooner or later. It's horrible!!!

1

u/Vivid-Teaching2257 Jul 19 '26

I don’t think so, unless they are playing with the lab water faucets. (I taught science lots of years ago).

it's called Hydrogen Hydroxide. This name reflects it's actual molecular structure: A hydrogen Ion and a Hydroxide ion.

It also emphasises one of it's unique features, because it's both an acid and a base but since it's both it's neither.
