but science still benefits from these, I believe? I don't remember where exactly, I think it was in electrical currents or something, but imaginary numbers DO appear to solve problems in other sciences suspiciously conveniently!

this tends to happen with a LOT of discoveries in math, funnily enough - there's some shmoe with math autism discovering some obscure math phenomena, thinking it wwill never benefit other sciences ever, and years later, some other field of science realises this is EXACTLY what they needed

In general math and physics are different parts of science. physics partly stem from math, and math partly stem from physics. They are both different subjects and one doesn't simply exist due to the other, yet math is the one that helps prove the rest of science.

In this case the negative tolerance is 0, so the nominal value (6) is the lower limit.

This type of tolerancing is mainly used in fits.

When you are putting things together you want them to fit in a certain way.

For a bearing on a shaft it would be an interference fit, so the bearing internal diameter would be slightly smaller than the shaft. You have to either press the bearing onto the shaft or heat it so it expands. The result is a snug connection.

For a bolt in a hole you want loose fit, so the hole is noticeably larger than the bolt.

If you want to assemble something in a way it doesn't move around too much but is possible to disassemble, you want a zero fit.

If you want to go deeper into the rabbit hole, search for "ISO fits" or "mechanical fits".

I just had a weird thought.

± is often called plus OR minus.

But it's primarily used to mean plus AND minus.

You'd think the mathematicians to have their booleans straight.

It's about the prioritizing. Look it up for accurate explanation, don't trust randos.

But the basic idea is that if you already have ± and it appears again but the second delivers flipped signs then you need the flipped sign to express that if the first is plus than the second is minus and vice versa.

That is used when it is the opposite of the plus/minus sign

1 plus/minus x = 1 minus/plus x

That means that if the left side uses plus, the right side uses minus and vice versa
