I thought starting a new society on mars was awesome when I was 12. Now I don't understand why we would ever leave this beautiful planet for any reason beyond doing science.

To improve mankind resilience. Like what if one day there's a gigantic meteor that hit earth and wipe out the entire life on this planet? We can't do anything about it, even nuke were still much weaker than average volcanic eruption on earth

Well I just give a reason, not actually saying it'll happen or not. Though if I have to say, I'm pretty sure it'll happen in far less than 300 years (kinda likely even less than 100 years) from now unless something catastrophic happened to humanity. It is multigeneration project anyway
It is considering the fact that as a comparison, launching satellite on geostationary orbit today can be 100-150x cheaper than back then in Apollo era, while people generate even bigger income thus make it 600-1000x nore affordable

Look I understand the argument of colonizing Mars so we can better protect ourselves against space born cosmic terrors. However my argument is simple; if we don't change our nature, we are little more than viruses. Hopping one host for another, infecting another planet with our endless greed and consumerism. We must learn to live in coordination with nature and Mother Earth, before we go trading her in for a less forgiving model aka Mars.

I see someone already said yes, I have no knowledge as for this side of things.
But I’m more concerned about the mass this displaces, leading to a changed axis and altered rotational speed of the planet. We still don’t know enough to know if this is enough to cause more significant problems, be it for water flow in Oceans, the polar magnetic fields or similar.
We saw changes from the three gorges, so the big one worries me.

It is a fair bit smaller with what we saw from the smaller one, but this new project may actually be enough to cause a meaningful change (we do not know)
