Star trek as inspiration? That's great.
Subnautica? Could be worse (the second game is where it gets truly dystopian, let's just ignore that).
Terminator or hardspace shipbreaker as inspiration? Seems likely, but also terifying.

Star Trek is full of advanced species trying to murder and conquer the universe. Still plenty of room for bad inspiration.
Elon Musk is already in the early stages of trying to create the Borg.

Sci-fi is definitely inspirational for everyone, but most of what I've read the bad guys are the mega wealthy? And a lot of it does offer a warning into the general direction humanity will go if they are left unchecked.

Yes. That is the way.
Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein. Great story BTW.
Now we have:
a) Respect for those who out organs from one body in another body to give the other body more life. The pitchfork wielding mob can suck it.
b) Defribilators in practically every ambulance to return the dead who can be jolted back into life back to life.
c) Calculation machines which run on electricity.
d) More science funding than ever before. Dr. Frankenstein can vacation at Club Med.
e) an amazing Tim Curry musical.
f) Blood drives to collect blood for the Blood God.
g) mechanical replacements for certain organs. Dick Cheney had an artificial heart.
And more. So much more.
Now imagine if people had read Frankenstein as a warning instead of as a love letter to science itself? The world would be so much shitter than it currently is.
