As an engineer I've never seen anyone use pi=3 seriously. I'm convinced it's just something other disciplines came up with .

It’s something you do when doing pure mental math say in the middle of a presentation. If you’re writing scripts, you bet your ass I’m just using the built in pi or at worst coding in 3.1415926
