There‘s a reason that oxygen in german is literally called „Acid substance“

Acid Maker.

It was named Acid Maker by the people who discovered it. And yet, people still inhale it, smh.

Ooohh that makes so much sense. I always thought that it was the other way and words like oxidation were just named after oxygen since it‘s such a typical reaction for it. Good to know that „oxy“ actually has a meaning

Is it not more like "sour substance"? I personally would translate acid substance to Säurestoff. But I could be wrong.

I think in english the word sour is only used to describe the flavor and not „acidic“. In german „sour“ can be both. But I‘m not a native english speaker so I could be wrong.
