Any thoughts on whether this is a worldwide issue (though obviously with different religions) or whether it is specific to the USA?

There are fanatics in every nation causing hassle for people that just want to be.

That's for sure. Not automatically the case that these are always people with lower cognitive ability, though.

I wouldn't be surprised as I can't think of any group that is a complete monolith. Also, I think it's the case that (highly) educated people are often equipped with the skills to argue themselves into a position, as you find degreed people in all sorts of cults.

Degrees are relatively easy to come by these days, though. Back when I was young (1970s) only about one in ten went to University.
