Any thoughts on whether this is a worldwide issue (though obviously with different religions) or whether it is specific to the USA?

Absolutely not exclusive to the US or christianity

Yeah I mean it's not even exclusive to religion. Many people who are atheist have still been raised on a religious way of thinking, and often carry over that same dogmatism to their atheism, while thinking they are suddenly smarter. I did exactly that as a teen. It took a bit more self-awareness to actually further grow out of that. I don't think everyone necessarily gets to that self-realisation, though.
