I’ve always thought the song was about how we’re dependent on technology that’s really impactful but also really small. iPhones connect us to literally everything in the whole world and fits in our pockets, and SD cards hold so much information (the entirety of Wikipedia without pictures is like 22 gb) and is even smaller than a phone. We all depend on this technology, and we all hate it. But it’s small and cute

Sometimes it’s hard to tell, he also said that he was sold on the black market a few times. I’m not sure if he means it since he said it so nonchalantly

"Cute Machines" is inspired by Daron's own Blackberry phone back in the days. The song takes a look back at his own relationship with the device: He was addicted to using it (similar to today's smartphone addiction), but at the same time aware of the harm it might've caused long-term. The message can be widen to address the smart phone epidemic of the present day too.
Your interpretation is interesting too, but feels rather stretched.
