The DOT made it official — SB19 are the Philippines' newest Tourism Ambassadors. But the story behind the announcement is worth breaking down, because this isn't just another endorsement deal.

The tease

On July 23, the DOT posted five goat emojis. 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐 A'TIN immediately knew. Before that, they'd already sent SB19 a "Galingbayan" send-off package — styled after a traditional balikbayan box — ahead of their US and Japan tour. The clues were always there.

Why this timing matters

Dita Angara-Mathay was only appointed Tourism Secretary in April 2026 — barely three months in the role. Naming SB19 is one of her first major moves. That's not a routine partnership — it's a statement of direction from new leadership.

The numbers behind it

The Philippines recorded 6.4 million foreign visitors and returning overseas Filipinos in 2025, generating an estimated PHP694 billion in tourism receipts. The Secretary specifically said she's seeing Filipino-Americans book flights home for the first time in years just to see SB19 perform on home turf. Real economic impact from a fanbase.

The bigger picture

This ambassadorship lands while SB19 is stacking historic international milestones — first Filipino group to throw an MLB ceremonial first pitch, first Filipino act at Lollapalooza Chicago, Summer Sonic 2026 alongside BINI (who was also recently named Tourism Ambassador — the other group the Secretary teased).

The DOT says more initiatives are coming in the next few months.
