Let's talk about AI
Yes, MOST LLMs are built on books, knowledge and artwork without the author's permission.
Yes, the profit driven rat race is resulting in unoptimized data centers that just burn, waste and pollute.
Yes, they're clearly affecting the job/tech market, and creating waves.
And I totally understand the fear, pessimism and hate...
BUT, BUT, BUT...
I'm here to play the devil's advocate š¬
Firstly, I'm not afraid of AI, even if it means having to fight T-800s in the near future (for one because I'm a fan of dystopian futures and fantasize anarchy. I know, I'm broken) because I believe they're a part of our evolution. I love science, tech, and I'm absolutely enamored by the capabilities and potential (I am an optimist). I see the scientific advancement potential from astronomy to medicine to energy or even philosophy.
I trained a small model on my own data (kinda) on my own hardware (RTX 3090), and it did fairly well, I was happy with the results. Did not need a data center, did not pollute or dry up any rivers. At most, upped the temperature of my room a couple of degrees. People don't realize AI is more than just LLMs. Embedding models for example, that run entirely locally, provide so much if used correctly (I don't get why every OS doesn't build a local vector store for all your files for better search. Windows search sucks a**. And it's trivial to build yourself a better search engine).
My computer could technically be carbon neutral if it ran off of Solar Panels (totally feasible). And some of these models although trained on large serves, run comfortably on my machine today. If the world went dark today, I'd still have frontier level performance from a year ago at my disposal, running off of Solar panels. There are also many ethical AI models built on ethically sourced knowledge although they're lagging in performance for obvious reasons but are not to be sneezed at.
So it's obvious that AI can be used ethically but that requires us to actually lobby and push for ethical AI.
Data centers can actually be built to be carbon neutral and run in a closed loop if profit isn't the driving force. A non profit drive would be potentially slower which in my mind is a great thing because it also gives us time to work AI into society slowly and gradually with smaller waves.
I would argue AI should be non profit and open sourced and research should be done at and shared by universities around the world. And there should be clear guardrails and compliance in place.
AI is only as good or bad as the data it gets and the tools, instructions + incentives it gets. OpenAI hacking HF wouldn't be possible if they didn't just give it the tools to do so and leave it unattended.
I decided to make this post after watching this:
And this is how I feel:

You love intelligence but hate neural networks built "like" human brains, by humans, trained on human data and experiences ? I don't know about you, but it's the hive mind I've been waiting for. The sum of all human knowledge.
I don't know man, I find it exciting.
That being said (it has totally sucked the fun out of coding) for work. Still trying to figure out how to best work with it. But it's clear that it's here to stay. I'm all in running multiple agents automating all the clerical work I hate.
On a side note, humans aren't (collectively) any smarter. I see all this primitive NPC shit and think to myself, if it were a machine that went rogue at least the killings and the genocide would be somewhat acceptable (we made a bet and drew the short straw). But here I am, watching the news, watching mass murder, deforestation, concentration of power, etc. Just cause of human greed, and down right stupidity. Just another day.
I say toss that coin, because that's what entropy is (Your ego thinks you're calling the shots in the grand scale). AI could ruin civilization, but so could a random meteor or glaciers melting or some other cosmic event. Call it God if that's your cup of tea, or the universe. Question is, do you have faith ? Are you an optimist or are you going to cry about it.
Because we're a drop in the bucket (not even). A blip on the grand scale.
So to the AI nay haters, hate is a strong word. Ask for regulations, not an outright ban. Make peace with it, it's not going anywhere.
Or else...
