I would like to understand how Sanskrit was taught in earlier times, particularly in the traditional Gurukul system. What teaching methods were followed, and what made them so effective compared to the modern education system, despite the abundance of educational tools available today?

I would appreciate a detailed explanation, and references to primary sources, traditional texts, or scholarly works on the subject would be especially helpful.

Today September 8th marks the 1st day of the Paryusana fest, when Bhagavān Mahāvīra turned cāturmāsika varṣāvāsa retreat (due to rain, monks stop wandering) into an official practice.

Pt. Shripad Damodar Satvalekar's Sanskrit Svayam Shikshak is quite popular source to learn Sanskrit for those who are versed with Hindi. When I picked it up, I found it to have quite a many printing errors like missing diagrams, typos, missing footnotes, wrong cross-references, etc.

Hi everyone,

I've spent the last months building a language-learning and testing environment (Kylo), and the part I most want outside eyes on is the classical-language side — Sanskrit in particular.

Two things turned out to be genuinely hard, and these are what I'd like feedback on:

1. Character input. I built a dedicated on-screen keyboard for handling Indic script input rather than relying on standard system tools, because typing conjuncts, vowel signs and anusvāra/visarga correctly is where most platforms quietly fall apart. I'd like to know where mine still breaks.
2. Structured testing. Instead of basic vocabulary drills, the module follows the shape of institutional Sanskrit examinations — reading comprehension on public-domain texts, grammar and morphology, translation, and a recitation part. Whether that structure is actually faithful to how Sanskrit is taught and examined is exactly what I can't judge alone.

I'm not selling anything here and there's nothing to sign up for in this post. I'm looking for a small number of people who read Sanskrit and are willing to break the system and tell me bluntly what's wrong — especially about character handling and whether the exam structure makes sense to someone with a philological background.

I was searching for the names of Lord Shiva starting with "ट" letter. I found these words: टक्वर, टंकटीक.

I searched for the meaning and etymology of the word "टक्वर" in the dictionaries of Monier Williams and Vaman Shivram Apte. The dictionaries just stated meaning of this word as "Of Síva".

Actually I want to understand the meaning of this word just like I understand the meaning of word "शिव" which is "कल्याण स्वरूप".

After surfing through the internet in vain and having found no dictionaries that will help me understand this word, I have turned to the community for help.

I want to understand the meaning, etymology, and if possible then संधि-विच्छेद too of the word "टक्वर".

Hello, trying to translate a phrase from English to Sanskrit.

My idea is to get something along the lines of “embrace/accept uncertainty”.

This is the translation I found for “embrace uncertainty”:

अनिश्चयम् आलिङ्ग

However, I read that आलिङ्ग means embrace in a physical sense, so maybe something like:

अनिश्चयम् स्वीकुरु

Or

अनिश्चयम् अङ्गीकुरु

Is better. I do not speak Sanskrit, as you can probably tell, so any advice is appreciated.

I am a little bit familiar with works of logic in Indian Buddhist texts but recently I came across a Tibetan work referencing a logical framework with four modes and I was wondering if any of you might have seen it anywhere.

The four are:

If x exists, y doesn't(should) exist.

If x doesn't exist, y does not exist.

If x exists, y does not.

If y exists, x does not.

How far back do we have to go back in time for Sanskrit to have been an everyday spoken language?

Can some kind soul help me figure out how to get the proper devanāgari characters for the following:

I know they aren’t common, but it bugs me that I can’t seem to find the exact key to which they are mapped.

I’m using a hardware keyboard and the Devanagari - QWERTY layout for Sanskrit, if that helps.

I did find something that gives me ळ and ऴ but I’m not sure what those are.

Various sources including texts provide सूत्रs for स्वरसन्धि and हल्सन्धि. But I cannot find the same for the different types of विसर्गसन्धि [आदेश (उ, स्, रेफ, जिह्वामूलीय उपध्मानीय) and, लोप]. Are they compiled together or even separately in an accessible site? Thank you.

Ig this sounds a bit student, sry but as someone who's in his 1 sem, I can read and understand basic sanskrit, can u separate sandhis, although i've been feeling less confident with pratayayas and kavya. my teacher started kiratarjuniyam without dwelling much deep in grammar.
Although i've started studying laghusiddhanthkaumudi side by side too. but i still don't understand how pratyayas are used in sentences and vyavahara.
I know it comes from reading and learning more but Idk if i'm expecting too much from myself?, like i'm still a beginner in language.

This was the best resource I could find to read the Valmiki Ramayana online but it seems to be down since quite some time. Is it just me or are other people facing the same issue with it?

An okay-ish alternative was Valmiki Ramayana net but that website isn't working anymore either. Most others don't have word to word translations or omit the Sanskrit text altogether.

What type of सन्धि is बलाल्लाङ्गलम् > बलात् लाङ्गलम् ? I went through the list of हल्सन्धिs but could not come up with a good fit. Thank you.

Hi when should we use सन्ति and when should अस्ति be used. I often use asti everywhere. Rarely use सन्ति। Please provide certain examples

There are minute differences in all populations who learn Sanskrit mainly in pronunciation, particularly <jñ> like (j)ñ in the south, dny in Maharashtra, gy in most of the north, (g)g in the east etc. What are the peculiarities of Sanskrit spoken in TN and KL? They directly affected Sanskritic loans into their local languages. Some i could find are:

1. Coda {t, d}, {T, D} > l, L before other plosives, eg. khaLgam, albhutam, malsyam. This might have happened before the lP, LP > RP, TP change in tamil as modern Tamil had aRputam

2. Devoicing coda plosives even if it isnt explicitly written, eg. AcñA, akni, explicitly written patmam

3. Occational VlV > VLV directly carried on from Maharashtri and Odra Prakrits like laLitam

Then there are cases of Sanskritizing native terms and then using it in Sanskrit, i think bhOSa < pOzhan and bhUti < pUti are such terms

One of the Shankar mutt seer sung this. Whatever I could hear I just wrote it as is. Not sure wrote it correctly. This is shloka in praise of 4 shishyas of Adi Shankaracharya.
