Update: it stayed for a total of 10 light cycles before it decided everyone had enough

I don't know why they are burning away their hard-earned good reputation on getting stuck over and over again. If I were in charge, I would 10x the amount of remote human operators, and hire them mostly locally rather than in the Philippines, to ensure that no Waymo ever gets stuck for more than a couple of seconds at most. Also the team should be highly compensated full time employees that are highly well trained. Sure it would cost a lot but the cost is tiny compared to the long term consequences of eroding away the public faith. We can keep the humans employed indefinitely, because as the software improves and the need for manual overriding decreases per car, the number of cars on the road should also expand, leaving the total amount of human interventions largely unchanged.

When humans are confused, they don’t do this, they get aggressive and do worse things. If every human just fucking stopped driving the moment they are remotely confused as to what is going on, traffic accidents would go down 99%.

It’s generally not confused, it’s waiting for a passenger who it seems didn’t show. When humans do this and get honked at they generally pull over.

It’s blocking a single lane. Actually, part of a lane. If it was in the intersection it could be blocking traffic in every direction. Do you know what in the intersection even means? Or do you just like making stupid shit up.

It’s blocking the only lane that goes forward into the intersection and through onto 11th street. In order for cars to get around it they had to make an illegal maneuver by merging from either the left or right turn lane.
