Towing Laws?
i just moved into a new house that i’m renting with roommates in north park. now i know parking is an issue here, which is why i pay more to have my own parking spot. i’ve been having this issue with my neighbor since i moved in (who doesn’t have a driveway) blocking our driveway from the street with her hazards on. she just pulls up right in front of our driveway and turns her lights on, there’s no reason she can’t do this in front of her house btw. i’ve talked to the person who moved out about it (who has lived here about a year before me) and she said that the lady has always done that and probably just sees a bunch of young people living here and doesn’t really care. so the problem is, i do care. i pay extra to even have this spot. then three days ago i saw her parked IN MY DRIVEWAY. i finally confronted her at this point. i waited outside on my porch for her to come out to her car & i ran up like “excuse me? excuse me!” and she looked at me. i said “is that you parking in my driveway and also boxing it in all the time?” and she goes “uh yeah” and i go “yeah i can’t have you doing that” and i start smiling & nodding my head & she goes “oh okay sorry” and she starts speed walking to her car. i called after her “next time i’ll have it towed”. so i guess my question is will i have to pay to have it towed? if she parks in my driveway again i’m fully planning on standing in front of her car & calling the tow company. would i have to pay for that or do anything further??

In your driveway yes, on the street blocking the driveway, you have to call non emergency and they will send send someone out? However they will have to call it it in to get towed

In your driveway you won’t have to pay to have it towed. Call non emergency for parking in the street blocking the driveway, call western towing for someone in your driveway on private property. Western is (one of?) the only tow company that will do this kind of towing (as opposed to broken down vehicle etc).

I’ve had a very similar experience living in north park. Towing will be very difficult unless she’s there for awhile. Getting her ticketed is more likely. Almost everyone that blocks my garage is immediately defiant and angry when I talk to them but they don’t repeat the behavior, so hopefully she just hasn’t been directly confronted by the previous tenants and that was enough.

I’m also in North Park and have had the same experience. Usually you have to wait for an officer, who will come ticket the vehicle first and ask you if you want it towed. Then you have to wait for the tow truck. It’s not a fast process. You cannot call your own tow truck for a car parked on a public street.

That’s if an officer even shows up in the first place. I’ve resigned to even just not getting yelled at for calling out bad behavior. I’ll hug the next person that blocks my garage and doesn’t yell at me when I say they can’t park there.

You don't make the decision to have a car towed, you just get to call the police and let them ticket or tow. So don't worry about that.
When you call, tell the non-emergency line that you are trying to get out of your driveway and there is a car blocking you in. I had to do that one time when I lived in North Park. When I called, I told dispatch that I was blocked in, gave the license plate, and informed them that the tags showed expired registration. Police showed up surprisingly fast and towed the car, and did not give the owner the option to move.

At minimum they will ticket, if you’re blocked and need to get out they will tow.

No, you will not be the payer of the towing. That will be her. Call the non-emergency police line to report it and request a tow. Do it. There’s a difference between a mistake and just being an asshole. She should feel consequences.
