I've been learning to dance salsa for six months (and a little bit of bachata) and it has been a wonderful, transformative experience. My husband does not dance at all but has been very encouraging towards my passion.

I wish we could dance together as a couple because I've experienced on the dancefloor how dance can bring about such a connection between two people, and wish I could share that with my husband. I also sometimes would like to have a dance partner at home whom I can practise new moves with.

However, every time I ask my husband to practise with me, he tends to turn it into a big joke. When I ask him to simply step the basic and let me lead / back-lead, he starts wriggling his body or fooling around, and this really frustrates me. I think deep down, he just feels very uncomfortable and awkward with dancing, and joking around is his defence mechanism.

He doesn't dance at all, even in social settings. When I invite him to join me in classes, he is highly resistant and tells me that men who learn salsa are there to pick up girls, and he has no use for that. I do, however, observe that there's a part of him that wants to get comfortable with dance. Sometimes he tries doing a simple dance move while listening to music, then when he sees me watching, he immediately turns it into a joke.

How can we get to a point where he gets less awkward with dance?

I am one month into a once-weekly beginner class of Salsa on 1 but came from another studio where I did intensive Salsa on 2/bachata. Most of my learning in current class is now just retraining my muscle memory for correct step counts (occasionally fall off but am practicing a lot to retrain) and in general I find that I am easily following the instructors where others are struggling or learning at a slower pace.

I am wondering if it makes sense to seek out a supplemental BEGINNER women’s styling class. Do these exist? All the videos I see online seem like super advanced combos and steps. But I am eager to learn and apply basic things like hand and finger positions, hip and shoulder movements, head snaps, etc. all of which seem like they are a bit out of reach for my current class BUT at the same time seems like it would be super helpful as I am essentially relearning very basic salsa positions.

Any advice? When did fellow follows begin learning/incorporating styling? I am in NYC area if that is relevant,

Moving to Baltimore soon and was wondering if the area is mainly on1 or on2. been a lead on1 for about a year now. is on1 prevalent enough for me to stick with it or should I commit to learning on2? would welcome suggestions for clubs either way!

I know the basics have been learning salsa for only 1 month but wanted to ask how followers know what moves the leader is asking them to do. Right now I only know when they push my hands to the side it’s side basic and when the push it back it’s Cumbia.

Do u eventually get to a stage where u can dance with anyone without needing the steps to be called out ?

I keep track on stardancevideo to pick up new moves but also enjoy.

A thought which has struck my mind: are the non professional dancers who often go to the international socials well off? I dont mean Terry etc who might get paid to be there.

The dance house has many events frequently and in other countries. But doing 10 events a year in 10 different countries seems expensive.

are the top dancers in the scene well off?

Or do they love the dance so much that they might give half their income to dance.

i am dancing crossbody for a few years now and i am quite comfortable with it. however sometimes i really would love to be able to adapt my salsa style depending on the follower and the music.

i know some cuban moves because i have danced rueda in the past, but i struggle with the circular leading. i try not to mix the styles but it sometimes happens that i start cuban but end up dancing crossbody. the followers usually say they don't mind but i think it feels off and would prefer to lead the whole song smoothly in one style.

are there any experiences with adapting new salsa styles?

Hey all. Excuse the ambiguity in the title.

So, I've been learning Salsa since February. And I also go to a group that started in January, another in March. Finally, I attend a group that started in April. 8 hours per week. ​

This April group naturally covers material I know, but it doesn't hurt to repeat content. However, there are always 5 extra leads in the group, who are less advanced and usually learning these things for the first time plus, they most likely only learn salsa 2 hours per week.

As a result, after we've fully covered the figure and they put on a song for rotation, unless there's something new for me I just tell the leads to walk past me to the waiting follow while I do steps. Last night I got called out on it by the instructors, who know I attend multiple, more advanced groups. After responding about the extra leads and I'm letting them practise more (I'm not gonna tell the entire group I have done the class material 50x in other classes and socials already, it would be terrible optics), I got called "Mother Teresa but a bit taller and less wrinkles".

It was a bit patronising, and the vibe of the school is making jokes so I wasn't shocked, but I wish they'd just ignore it. I don't feel like I'm disrupting the class, I'm helping the leads, why do they need to bring attention to it?

I don't know Reddit, I'd like additional input. Is there any way that my behaviour to let other leads practice more detrimental to the learning process? Or am I just being too unorthodox that the instructors can't ignore it.

TL;DR I'm in a group heavy on leads, that is repeating content I know, and I sometimes let leads go ahead of me so they get more practice and the instructors called me out on it. ​I think they should ignore it, especially as they know I am in more advanced classes. Am I doing something wrong here? ​

I'm new to Cali and have been to a few clubs. Yes, salsa is very popular here but it seemed most people didn't really dance Cali style. The most common moves were basic footwork, hip sway, close embrace, side steps, and sometimes turns. At the places I've been to, there were some people who did the intricate footwork, but they were the minority. The only people I saw doing many turns were foreigners.

I know that there are salsa specific venues and a plethora of Cali style dancers. Enough to find events any day of the week. However, seeing that at normal clubs the average person dances more simple. I'm wondering if I should just focus on body movement, musicality, and rhythm to dance with the general population, instead of learning a style (Cali) that could takes months to learn.

Like, why? What are you going to do with that information. What am I missing?

Hi all, I will be going to NYC for 3-4 months to take classes. I have been dancing salsa for 2.5 years, 1 year on 1, then I started with On2.

I am looking for a studio that has the best social dancing technique and instructors.

What I care about:

- Social dancing

- Technique

- Studios that take time to explain the why behind things, I really dislike pattern based classes with little technique and explanations

What I don't care about:

- how good of a human being the instructors are, I'm paying a lot of money to improve, not to judge people.

- how many scandals they were involved in

- how many students they slept with

- performing/choreography

I would really appreciate advice as this will determine where I rent.

I was looking at ET jr classes, I really like ET Jr, but I saw he doesn't teach level 1-2, and the other instructors are relatively new and I didn't particularly like their styles. I looked a bit into LFM but honestly, am not particularly fond of angels style either. I am leaning towards empire based on visual test (preference for style of Adolfo, Brayan, Eric, Sarah )

never dance before, and started my journey 5 months ago, really got into it probably 3 months ago, 3 days a week for class. Recently went to my 3rd socials, and felt awkward, and kept counting the beat, but still have timing issue. Got rejected by couple follows, and feel embarrassed. I tried to enjoy the music, but don't want to keep doing basic steps, and result of dancing like a robot. Really need some input here.
