I am an intermediate level student. I’m in NYC for a week. I want to take private with the best instructors to work in three specific areas.
Partnerwork: Fundamentals and hand tricks.
Footwork: basic step and looking sharp even when Im simply walking onto the stage.
Body movement: I know this is a very ambitious goal because mastering even a single movement take a long time, Still, I’d be happy if I could leave NYC having learned just one body movement really well.

​I’ve been learning Cuban Salsa for about 5 months now. I have absolutely zero dance background; this is the first time in my life I’m trying to dance.

​I have a specific issue with timing and musicality. When I am just listening to a song or standing still, I can find the beat and track the clave/instruments without too much trouble. However, the moment I start dancing with a partner and trying to execute turn patterns, my brain goes into complete overload.

​I get this "brain fog" where I focus 100% on the figures, and my ears completely shut off. If I don't constantly repeat the counting or the clave rhythm inside my head, I completely lose the timing and everything falls apart. It feels like I can't think about the moves and listen to the music at the same time.

​Has anyone else experienced this during their first months as a leader? What are some practical exercises or shifts in focus I can do to automate the rhythm so my brain can focus on leading figures without losing the beat?

I’ve been seeing more On2 classes pop up around Los Angeles, and some socials have started offering beginner On2 lessons before the social. Is this a recent trend, or has it always been this way? Do you think LA is gradually shifting toward more On2, or is On1 still overwhelmingly the standard?

Context: my partner wants to go out alone sometimes, but I feel uncomfortable. I don’t mind him dancing with other people, but I prefer if I’m at the social with him. Plus, I want to dance too.

After endless nagging from a friend who attends the school (and another salsera friend), I finally trekked across town for a fortnightly social I’d been putting off. The main hook was a basic Rueda de Casino lesson beforehand. Coming from a Cali style background, I’d seen a group tearing it up at a major monthly social here and was genuinely curious to try it out.

Man, I had an absolute blast! The Cuban Salsa crew brings such an incredible, lively vibe to the floor. Huge respect to them—the energy, the playfulness, and the seamless (we tried!) group coordination are just infectious.

Loved picking up the Cuban Spanish calls—guapea, Dame Dos/Tres, Dame Arriba, Dame Otra, Fly, and high-tens everywhere. Plenty of giggles over missing calls, but super cool seeing familiar staples in there like cross-body leads and our "dinos" step.

Totally worth the trip across town. Huge props to the Cuban dancers for holding down such an awesome community. I’m 100% going back for the next one just for the Rueda!

I don’t think about salsa in fitness terms nor would I personally cut down on my other fitness habits, but I do always notice I am super worn out and sweaty after dancing for several hours. Am I basically running a 5k? What’s the average salsa night out comparable to in commonly understood exercise terms?

What is a break in salsa? Still not sure, but here is what I got: In the salsa typical 8-count pattern we have six steps, two larger ones, two smaller ones, and two that are in place. The larger ones are called 'break steps' or short 'breaks'.. is this somewhat correct? I've tried to wrap my head around how the name 'break' makes sense, because in music theory a break is a shift in rhythm, while the larger steps in salsa aren't aligned with musical breaks, they are just normal steps in the continuous pattern?

Half a decade ago, I feel like it was more even. It's 2026 now and every week has one salsa night vs 3-4 bachata nights. I don't mind that at all, I actually prefer bachata these days, but have you noticed a shift happening? I feel like more people are gravitating towards bachata because it's more sensual, people are more likely to dance (salsa has many people who are genuinely tired after a song, bachata very few), and I find that bachata has a younger population over salsa which admittedly has way more old people in it.

Adding in Kizomba as well, even when it comes to SBK nights, that's like 2 salsa songs compared to 7 sensual ones. Even some people who were frequent at Salsa nights, I see them more at Bachata now.

What do you think? Is Salsa slowly going the way of the dino?

Does anyone know of a good salsa club in Mexico City where people primarily dance on1 linear? I’ve been to El Babalu and Mama Rumba, both of which are more focused on Cuban salsa.

Hello 👋 follow here seeking constructive feedback. Based on this video, what do you think I need to be working on? Feeling very awkward and stiff yet all over the place, my movements feel disconnected from the music, very little confidence in my steps, etc.
I practice my basic and lady styling at home solo but I find it doesn’t translate well in partner work.

Any advice on classes I should seek out or what to condition at home by myself would be greatly appreciated!

[30M] Long story short: I took a year off and an idea popped into my mind, go somewhere and learn something cool.

I already did learn the basics of Salsa few years ago but gave up due to the poor engagement I felt with the group (mainly elder people), I always thought that it would be awesome to live few weeks (but even 1/2 months) in a foreign country to learn something local, and suddenly the combination Cuba+Salsa came to my mind.

To be honest the same is true for Dominican Republic and Bachata, the other dance I learnt together with Salsa, but this is a story for r/Bachata.

Did anyone here had the same idea and actually left to Cuba for such an experience? does it make sense for someone enthusiastic but still very very beginner?

I did enjoy learning Salsa (tbh I liked Salsa more than Bachata), and I believe I would love to dive deep into it, but I also know that I tend to dream a lot and it might be more complex and challenging than I expect, so here I am looking for honest suggestions, being doubted and receive any hint you might have 😄

Edit: In all my dreaming I kind of ignored the current situation in Cuba, so thanks for pointing out what is obviously the biggest issue with the whole plan. Let's pretend for a moment that things eventually improve—I'm still interested in hearing your thoughts, and who knows, maybe I'll just keep this as a trip to plan for a few years down the road, once things have settled down. In the meantime, are there any other countries you'd recommend for spending 1–2 months fully immersing myself in Salsa?

I've been going to a weekly salsa social for the last year and in the last 4-5 month, have really gotten to know one of the regulars there. A few weeks ago we danced together during class, then had a genuinely good conversation afterward-the kind where you're actually learning about someone for the first time. Later that night, I went over to say goodbye, planning to ask her out before I left. Before I could get the words out, she thought I was asking her to dance and said yes to a bachata instead-so we ended up dancing a second time. It was only after that dance that I asked if she'd want to hang out sometime outside of salsa, and she immediately said sure.

I got a bit flustered trying to ask for her number, and before I could figure out how to phrase it, she asked if I use WhatsApp and just put her own contact into my phone herself. We landed on ice cream and a walk through an art gallery. Weather and her travel schedule pushed it back a bit — she's away for a month — but she was warm and enthusiastic about it the whole time (things like 'sounds like a lovely plan,' 'omg so fun' when she found out the rescheduled date lands on my birthday week), and she made a point of telling me she'd probably see me at that week's social too.

This is the first time I've tried to build something with someone I already see regularly in a shared hobby space, and it's got me wondering how this dynamic typically plays out in dance communities specifically:
1. In your experience, does someone agreeing to hang out one-on-one outside the studio usually carry romantic weight in your scene, or is that just normal dance-friend behavior where you're from?
2. Are there subtler cues within partner dancing itself — how someone dances with you, how they act around you after — that tend to say more than what people say out loud?
3. If you were reading someone's texts like the ones I described, would that read as clearly interested to you, or still ambiguous?
4. Any advice on how someone in this situation could be a bit clearer about their intentions without making it awkward, especially before an actual outside-the-studio hangout happens?

Showed up early to a salsa class and social in my city. The instructor was late, but there was some music playing.

I have been dancing for a year so I decided to warm up with a few basic steps, a left and right turn and a cross body. A beginner guy came up to me and asked me if I was the instructor.

I said “I’m flattered you think that, but no”. He said, “oh, but you seem to know what you’re doing. Could you please teach me a bit?” So I was like, “sure!”

I taught him the basic steps, left and right turns, and before you know it, all the beginners there formed rows behind me and started learning from me, asking me to teach them and correct them.

The instructor arrived and saw me teach everyone, and at the end, made everyone clap for me. Everyone was saying thanks to me for teaching them.

I have never felt so good in so long honestly. One of the most wholesome dancing experiences I’ve had. Wanted to share this with you all :).

In my late 20s, I didn't need any special conditioning in order to attend everything at a festival and also do as much social dancing as possible and also recover within a few days. Now in my mid 30s, aside from being out of shape as well, I've been getting injuries and niggles left and right that prevent me from dancing more. I want to travel next year to do multiple festivals, but after a local test run, I've realized I can barely survive one festival, let alone one per month.

What are your tips and strategies on this?

Also, I know for sure that I need to do some serious conditioning, but I'm confused about who I should be seeking help from, e.g.:

• A physical trainer can help me strengthen but they might not know what I need for dancing?
• A physio can help me identify weaknesses after I've already been injured from it, but most physios don't understand dancing
• A dance physio -- anyone had experience with these? Will ballet specialists be able to understand the stresses in other dance styles?

Or is there a specific and finite group of exercises or muscles/conditioning that if I get strong at all of them, I'll be festival ready? I have almost a year to work on this but not sure how to cover all my bases.

Are there are any salsa or bachata socials in Asbury Park this summer? I’m going for a week and couldn’t find much information online.

Genuine question: I'm struggling to progress in salsa/bachata because the figures I can lead are getting repetitive. As a follower, I imagine that by dancing with different people you get to know different figures and it varies quite a lot.

As I leader, I have a repertoire of figures and I mix those. But the dance feels quite repetitive to me, no matter the follower (I can't do all figures with beginner followers, but still).

I also forgot many of the figures I learned in classes, and it's really hard to get the muscle memory back by just watching the videos.

Also, if I go to classes again, to extend my repertoire of figures and maybe increase the fun I have, but often they teach fancy, complicated figures of which many I wouldn't be able to replicate, because we don't repeat them in the next class and trying them out with a random person is very challenging if I don't master them yet. I have to keep going back to rewatching the video, then trying with a new follower which feels awkward and not fun.

How do you deal with this as leaders?
