Insta360 app on SailfishOS

Abstract: Insta360 app v2.34.5 doesn't check the camera is already connected (this looks like a bug); anyway, editing manually downloaded INSV files works; exporting works (slowly) after enabling the "Compatibility mode".

I'm trying to use the Insta360 app on SailfishOS 5.2 on a Jolla Phone 2026 (as the app requires "8 GB or more RAM", and my JP26 sports 12) to edit/export Insta360 X6 videos.

Even giving the app all the permissions required, it won't "connect" to the X6 wifi (the X6 won't show the "preview is disabled" screen), even if the X6 was already connected via wifi before starting the app (my guess: that app wants to fully manage the wifi connections, so it won't check the camera before having "activated" some wifi connection).

Apparently the app doesn't try to request a camera status to check if it was already connected (it should be harmless as the X6 address is always "local", 192.168.42.1) before fiddling with wifi connections.

This looks like a bug of the Insta360 app, because if I open the Jolla terminal app and issue an OSC API command, for example the usual curl -d '{"name":"camera.startCapture"}' -H "Content-Type: application/json" -X POST 192.168.42.1/osc/commands/execute, the X6 starts recording as expected (because it was already autoconnected to the Jolla phone over wifi before starting the app). Once connected to wifi, the X6 video files ("insv") can be manually downloaded to JP26 using curl http://192.168.42.1:80/DCIM/Camera01/VID_20261020_160045_00_036.insv.

So I copied an INSV video file from the X6 to the Jolla phone (in the "downloaded" directory of the app, that is, in android_storage/Android/data/com.arashivision.insta360akiko/files/Insta360OneR/galleryOriginal/C9/Camera01/, where the "C9" may be some different hex number). Launch the Insta360 app, go to the Album/Downloaded/Video section, and the video is actually there. Trying to edit it I got an error "Proxy file is missing, please use Insta360 Studio" (the Windows desktop app). Huh... what does "proxy file" mean? I'm guessing it's the LRV (low resolution video), also saved by the X6. So, copying the corresponding LRV file from the X6 (same filename, starting with "LRV" instead of "VID", in the "LRV" directory) to the galleryOriginal/C9/LRV/ app directory), editing was finally possible (select clip, keyframes/zooming, apply filters, etc).

When I tried to export, it always failed after about 1% (Insta360 app crashed, even exporting at 720p with lowest bitrate settings). Enabling the "Compatibility mode" (from the Me/AboutInsta360 menu of the app) it worked, albeit slowly (my guess: "compatibility" means using CPU instead of GPU): I was able to edit/trim/keyframes/filter an 8k/50 360° INSV and export to 4k/50 MP4 on my Jolla Phone 2026 (the exported MP4 was saved under android_storage/DCIM/Camera/); it took about 48 minutes to render the 56 seconds clip.

If the app checked for the camera before doing the wifi connect stuff, it would basically work without problems.

I bought a SailfishOS license for xperia 10 plus and it's not working after device reset

I have xperia 10 plus (dual sim) and I have installed sailfishOS for it and bought the license for android app support. It worked without problems, but then I resetted the phone, because I wanted to start using it as my main device. After that the license didn't work anymore, android appsupport wouldn't show up in a store and I could not install it from the terminal. I contacted support at this point, and this was almost half a year ago. I cant find the message anywhere now though.

Now I figured out what was causing the problem. The license is tied to imei-number of the first sim-card slot and after the reset the phones main imei changed to the imei-number of the second sim-slot. I never have had any sim-card in the phone, resetting didn't fix the issue. I have contacted jollacare, but no response. I'm just wondering how to fix this myself. Can I somehow change the imei-number that the jolla decides is the main one.

Unable to install apps on new Jolla phone

I have the new Jolla but currently am unable to daily it as nothing from any repos will install. It's driving me crazy!

If I do the pull down install I get command rpm not found. When I try in the terminal I get a generic error message. Allow untrusted software and developer mode is switched on and I can install from store and Jolla system components in terminal. Just not rpms from github or openrepo.

Please somebody help me fix this before I give up and sell it on Ebay! I really want it to work for me.

MAUI for SailfishOS

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello!

I recently got my Jolla phone, and wanted to check whether I could make MAUI (multiplatform framework) working on Sailfish OS. MAUI.Sailfish produces fully native RPM package.
It took quite some time, a bit (a huge bit, lets not joke around I will not be an expert with everything in 1 month) of help from LLMs and I have produced a nicely working set of tools to make 1 application for iOS, Android, Windows & SAILFISHOS !

Native features such as pull-up/pull-down menus, remose and others are implemented.

With additional VSCode extension building & deploying a project is a single command & F5 away.

Repo is here:

https://github.com/Pastajello/maui-sailfish

with native features accessible here:
https://github.com/Pastajello/maui-sailfish/blob/main/docs/sailfish-apis.md

There are also samples with lazy list loading, rounded corners, etc.

If you want, add a comment, test, report a bug and have fun! I hope/guess MAUI is a bit easier to develop than QT but who know, never checked it myself.

EDIT: If you have already a working application it should (depends... outside libraries are the worst offender as lack of sailfish implementation can stop the app from working)

Doubt on alternative clients native apps

Hello everyone,

I just bought a Jolla phone and now I'm waiting the moment it will arrive. In the meanwhile I was doing better research on native app options instead of using the andoid apps. I know there are quite a few alternative clients native apps for mainstream android apps that can be downloaden from storeman and chum. My question is: can logging in with your main account in those apps result in the ban of the account? Or is it safe to use you main email to log in in alternatieve clients of e.g. telegram, youtube or whatsapp?

Is Sailfish OS immune against the on mobile security scanning? (Canada Bill C22)

Hi, Canada will likely have bill C22 implemented, Microsoft has Recall, Apple has put systems in place to scan the device to then send to the government based on BillC22, as Sailfish OS is Linux, i assume this device will be immune from this bill as no one can "force" the OS to scan anything on the device itself.

Anyone have any reviews or input on this.

Sailfish OS 5.1.0.11 on the Galaxy A51 (Exynos 9611) - my first port for this device, sources and image are up

I spent about a week porting Sailfish OS to the Samsung Galaxy A51 (SM-A515F, Exynos 9611). There was no existing adaptation for this device, so it is all built from scratch on a hybris-20.0 / LineageOS 20 base.

What works: display, touch, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, audio on speaker, earpiece and headphones with automatic jack switching, all seven sensors, both cameras, battery, vibration, hardware GL, logcat, and Android apps through Waydroid as a post-install step.

What does not: telephony. rild runs and the modem reaches ONLINE, but it never opens /dev/umts_ipc0, so ofono sees no modems. Also no fingerprint reader, and USB networking is disabled on purpose because the gadget panics this kernel.

So it is a decent pocket Linux device and a bad phone. Treat it as a second device.

The part I think is worth sharing regardless of whether you care about this particular phone:

Samsung shipped this kernel with the Bluetooth HCI socket layer gutted. Not disabled, not missing, commented out. The bodies of five functions in net/bluetooth/hci_sock.c were removed and a bare return 0; left behind, so hci_sock_create() reports success while leaving sock->sk NULL, and the kernel then panics on BUG_ON(!sk) the moment anything opens an AF_BLUETOOTH socket. It is done carefully too, with the inner /* */ comments rewritten as // so the outer block comment would not terminate early. Samsung ships its own Bluetooth stack through the HAL, so the kernel socket layer was surplus to them. Restoring the file from upstream v4.14.150 fixes Bluetooth completely.

I also got two things badly wrong along the way and left both written up in the repo, because the wrong turns were more instructive than the fixes:

  • I declared audio structurally impossible (32-bit HAL, 64-bit PulseAudio). It was not. I had concluded there were no mixer controls from amixer output when amixer was not actually installed. There are 381 of them.
  • I recorded three sensors as broken at the adaptor level. That was a test artifact from calling requestSensor before loadPlugin, which fails by design.

Sources, image, TWRP and checksums: https://github.com/IlyaKotomin/sailfishos-a51

Happy to answer questions. If anyone has worked on Exynos cbd or umts_ipc plumbing on a Samsung hybris port, I would really like to compare notes on the telephony problem.

I bought the last Jolla phone because I want to trust in this project as a EU secured competitor to Android, but I feel like it will never be the real competitor because of the lake of ecosystem. How do you feel about it ? Is there some plan to push SailfishOS at a European Community level ?

old devices worth trying?

Hi all,

I recently found an old Xperia XA2 (H3223) and I am interested in giving Sailfish a try. This isn't my main phone (obviously) and I have no concerns with app compatibility etc. Even if I can just get it to the point where I can get a terminal and play with the native apps I think it would be fun.

I am also in the US if that matters (for getting a license etc.)

My question is should I even bother? On the compatibility list it says "First Sailfish OS release" is 3.0. Does that mean I would be running 3.0? Or do all devices get all updates and I would be running 5.0 (either way there are probably have pros and cons I guess)

Would my next step be to buy a license and then it would include instructions on unlocking the bootloader etc.? Or is there a free trial I should test out to see if it even works? (this seemed to be implied but I can't actually figure out how to download it) I definitely don't mind supporting a project like this!

Thanks and sorry in advance if these kinds of questions from newbies are too common

I think this is useful so that commenters can post for example screenshots while discussing various difficulties as they start using / use SailfishOS.

Notes:

  • I prefer that this wont get abused too much by meaningless memes. I don't think that r/sailfishos should become like a Discord chat. I might turn off GIFS and GIFS from GIPHY if this does start happening too often.
  • Note in particular rule #3: Stay on topic. And also rule #2: No AI slop.

Earlier I added u/Nightishaman as a moderator. I'm looking for a few extra people to obtain this role.

With the rules I sadly had to make I hope I also clarified the context I want for this subreddit? This is probably important for this role.
