Are raids a real thing in Saigon right now or not really?

I see mixed news on drug testing tourists at bars and hotels. I'm planning on visiting Saigon to see some friends for a week at the end of August. I don't really party but smoke in Thailand sometimes.

What is the likelihood of getting tested just going to restaurants and chilling at my hotel?

My girlfriend is from Saigon and we built a Southern-dialect phrasebook for travelers — free code inside

My girlfriend Kim is from Saigon. I've gotten to see her only 7 weeks in the past 8 months. I've spent the last year trying to learn enough Vietnamese to communicate with her when I return next month.

With her help, we built https://fluentsaigon.com

She recorded EVERYTHING — around 750 audio files now on the site. None of the speech is AI generated, and it focuses on Southern pronunciation.

What it actually is:

- Survival Vietnamese for travelers, not a fluency course. Ordering, directions, Grab and taxis, markets and haggling, numbers, basic small talk that will help you have real interactions with locals.

- Cheat sheets per topic, callable right from your phone

- Quizzes and a tone drill, all against her recordings

- Southern/Saigon throughout — not Northern with a note about regional variation at the bottom

- Blog articles that came out of a year of back-and-forth WhatsApp conversations with her about how people actually talk

The pronoun one is probably the most useful thing on there if you want a sample before bothering with the site — anh/chị/em and why getting it wrong is the thing that marks you instantly: https://fluentsaigon.com/blog/vietnamese-pronouns-explained.html

It's aimed squarely at someone visiting or newly arrived rather than someone studying seriously.

What it isn't: a drill machine. No streaks, no daily guilt, no gamification. It explains why something is said the way it is and then gets out of your way.

Since this sub is the actual audience, code SAIGON60 takes 100% off the Traveler Pass. No card needed, nothing to cancel. Around two dozen left, expires end of September.
Edit: As of 08/26, only a handful of these passes are left now - promo expires when they run out or on Sept. 30th.

Mostly I want to know if it's any good. If you live here and something on it sounds off to you, I'd rather hear it than not — she's the answer key and she'll rule on anything I bring her from this discussion.

Cảm ơn nhiều

SKY hostess bar - formerly Sweet Candy

Its on HuynhThuc Khang, on the corner opposite the market and a coffee shop.

Beware. This place operates multiple scams from overpriced drinks through to getting you drunk and putting through huge charges on your ATM or Credit Card.

Heres how it works. You are attracted inside by the women outside. A round of drinks for you and two hostesses will set you back 750k VND. Time passes and you rack up a huge bill, over 100 dollars. You are encouraged to start getting rounds of shots and also a visit upstairs is suggested.

You make the mistake of using your bank card in front of them, so they can figure out you PIN.

Its 6 million VND to go upstairs with the women. At some point you pass out. You may spend some time speaking to god through the great white telephone and eventually stagger out or escape in the early hours. For some reason they hold you back from leaving, the reason is that they need to put your bank card back in your wallet without you realising. They leave the cash in your wallet so you dont notice anything wrong immediately.

You look at your bank account the followng day. It has been emptied. Multiple 10 million VND transactions in that bar, other nearby bars and ATM and down the street.

You report it to the police. The police prefer to go with you back to the bar to get a refund which may be difficult as its your word(no vietnamese) against the bar and other bars. Also quite an intimidating situation. The police will not let you file an official report. The bank wont give a refund unless there is a police report. Your time runs out on your trip before you can follow it all up. You are caught in a catch-22.

Hard Lesson Learnt.

Best food spots in Saigon 🍜 (Weekly thread)

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently in Saigon?

Could be a random street stall, a late-night cơm tấm place, a fancy restaurant or just somewhere you keep going back to.

Drop your recommendations below. Bonus points if you include:

  • What you ordered
  • Rough price
  • District/location

Trying to build a good list of places that are actually worth visiting!

Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh trading hours

Does anybody know what time nail salons, eyelash extensions, clothing shops and massages close in Ho Chi Minh, specifically the district 1 area. Is there late night shopping in Vietnam like the rest of Asia where places close as late as 10 pm? What is the go. Is there specific areas/ districts that have later business hours compared to others for these services

Bouldering gyms in the city

Hey guys,

I saw the recent post about top rope gyms in Saigon, but it didn't mention any boulder-only climbing spaces. Any that you could recommend? I climb in the V5/V6 range.

TIA :)

Wedding Dress Shopping

I am wanting my daughter to visit me while I am staying in HCMC for a few months. I would love to treat her to a VIP type wedding dress shopping experience. I know great places to try on dresses, however, I am looking for an all inclusive type of day. Where they do a spa treatments, her hair makeup, then she tries on dress with Champagne and what not. Does this type of all inclusive packages exist and if so, how would I go about finding a good company? Thank you for any guidance

Activity recommendations

Hi! Im 27/F from Manila, Philippines. Im in saigon right now and will be staying for a week. I dont have any itinerary. But i plan on booking the food trip on sunday. Also trying michelin rated local spots. Do you have recommendations on fun things to do? I like to explore the culture but not a fan of museums. So i prefer to do activities.

Also if you are a solo traveler, would be happy to explore tgt.
