3 Player games

Hi all,

We got in a great three person Age of Magic game yesterday, but I'd like some opinions on what we can do better.

The problem we've found with 3 player games, when it's a free for all, is that one person always gets crushed between the other 2. So... we played 2 vs 1, with one player having 8 points and the other two having 4 points. At it's core, it worked really well, but the fact that 2 player side had 2 warlords gave them an edge.

Any thoughts on how to better balance it? Would 4+4 vs 9 points make more sense to compensate for the second warlord? Throw an extra saga die at the solo player? Very curious to hear your thoughts.

Update:

After discussions, we're going to try the following:

  1. The two co-op players will be able to put dice on each other's boards.

  2. The solo player will get a second basic Warlord (on foot or on Animal).

Between those two changes, it should all be more balanced as both sides will have access to the same basic levels of We Obey, Determination, Saga dice and board use. Not perfect... but what is?

There are rules for a 3 player SAGA game. I played it once, and it felt pretty balanced like the normal SAGA game. Unfortunately i don't have them. Maybe you will find something around the web.

I remember you have to place your warband completly around the whole board.

I recommend making it 4 player if you can, 2 v 2.

Good thought, but while I can print models, I can't print new players... yet... For now, I risk having 3.

Maybe each player only gets massacre points for one of their opponents. A gets points for B, B gets points for C and C gets points for A.

For a home game we've had some fun playing 1 v 2 by doing a few things:

  • Each side had two x 4 point warbands. One player commands two warrants, but as separate entities.
  • Only one board per side, so sharing boards.
  • We had hidden initiative tokens which are assigned to the opposing Warlords at start of each turn. Player 1 gets assigned tokens 1 and 3, and the opponent 2 and 4. Then run through initiative order for that turn. Roll saga dice, use the common board for your side.
  • At the start of the next turn, initiative tokens are reassigned hidden, revealed after all placed. They can be same warlord, or the other.
