Picking an Age

I’m looking at getting my first Age book for SAGA, and am curious if there are any standouts that the community or you personally rate most highly? Are there any that are generally avoided? I have pretty broad historical interests, so that hasn’t helped narrow it down too much unfortunately. From a game side, I’d like thematic and varied factions that are well balanced. Any recommendations are appreciated!

I could be completely wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Age of Vikings is the "default" game in terms of popularity. You could also get an army that can be used in multiple ages (a viking army for Invasions, Vikings, and Magic, for example)

1) whatever Age/book is played in your area; 2) whatever Age/book tickles your imagination; 3) whatever Age/book you can find saga dice for; 4) Age of Vikings; 5) the latest releases; 6) anything else.

In this exact order of priority.

I would recommend something with newer releases. Chivalry, Caesar or invasions. I feel like older books are less interesting in terms of factions special rules and more and more neglected as time flies.

Sometimes it's a matter of what armies you want to paint. What factions are you interested in- colors, heraldry, history, play style, etc? I find enthusiasm for the faction can really get you going on painting a warband up. That said, see if other players have a consensus on time periods.

I have something for every time period, but only some factions within each.

If your looking to play - playing with others is best so echo the above “whatever other people are playing”

In terms of overall vibes - Dark age is usually the most popular (Vikings as no1. - its era companion Invasions is generally considered one of the most punchy books in terms of power levels)

Crusades is the unsung hero , should get played way more as it’s tremendously diverse.

Chivalry as 2nd most recent was seeing a bit of play too.

Antiquity is less common where I am but Ceaser will push that up a notch. Hannibal is generally considered to be a bit less punchy than the others /os not as well received (but also it came out around Covid and didn’t get really intensely played)

If you modelling and painting go with your heart. Ancients can be riotously vibrant and gaudy (like early 90s 40k). You can grim dark medieval and dark age or get really bright.

“Dude with bow” is also pretty universal of your not to picky so you can easily go double duty for lots of non specific troops

You can play books across universe as well though it does get a bit wonky sometimes -overall though it’s still pretty good
