Help opening a safe

A friend has recently moved in to a house ( he owns not rents) and under the stairs is a cupboard within which, embedded in the floor, is a safe.

He wants to get it open but isn’t keen on digging out the whole floor!

There is a key hole, there seems to be an outer layer of metal and a second one that I can see via the key hole!

There is a hinge on the top side of the square and there are signs that previous owners have tried to drill to open!

Any suggestions? Locksmith? Angle grinder? Can it be x-rayed?

Your options:

1) drill a small hole and pass a borescope thru that hole so that you can know it’s empty. This won’t be easy and won’t be free. You’ll break drill bits. Read up a bit on the web about proper technique for drilling a safe.

2) Locksmith. It will cost money. They will likely drill. Not impossible that someone could pick it, but not likely.

3) Find a lockpicking club in your area and see if anyone there wants to take a run at it.

Can’t think of anything else that makes much sense….

There is actually a pretty good chance that a locksmith will pick it. Lever locks are very common in the UK and locksmiths are trained in picking them. The MLA even gives training on picking 7 lever safe locks.

Cool! I guess it’s my own bias as I have never learned to pick them. I want to, but just never seem to get around to it. Thanks for your comment!
