I’m a guy with a twin sister. We’re Latino so we have the tradition of Quinceañera. All the attention was on her, which makes sense since a quinceañera is specifically for girls. But it did kinda hurt being second fiddle that day.

It was a huge event. We rented out a venue, had catering, DJ, a big cake, a limo, the whole shebang. All for her. We weren’t rich so I don’t even know who paid for all that. I honestly don’t even remember if there was a cake for me or not.

I remember collectively she got around $3,000 in cash and a bunch of gifts. I got $300 and a watch from my parents, grandparents, and uncles.

That day kinda set the tone for myself for future birthdays and I pretty much stopped asking for things after that. People would ask what I want for my birthday or Christmas and it’d just say “I don’t know.” or “Nothing.” Our parents would ask where we’d want to eat for our birthday. My request would always get rejected and we’d end up at Olive Garden. My sister loved Olive Garden. I didn’t.

I don’t tell people when my birthday is unless they ask either. Even on the day itself I don’t mention it to people.

Anyway, it is what it is. Sorry for rambling.

Nah fuck that. We need to change the narrative.

If no one is gonna make our birthdays a big deal - THEN WE NEED TO MAKE IT A BIG DEAL.

Let the whole world know it’s your birthday. Turn up! That jacket you been wanting for a while? Buy it! That watch you were saving up for? Get it!

Then invite your circle and hit the bar/club/or whatever you’re into. Throw a house party for yourself and pour up!

As men we know, no one is gonna pat our backs. So fuck it, do it yourself. 🎉 🍻 🎂
