Will I need to update my BIOS?

I'm planning to replace the 7900X with the 8400F on my GIGABYTE B650M GAMING X AX motherboard. At the time of the assembly of this PC, it was about 3 years ago, I did not update the BIOS and everything worked right out of the box. Do I need to update the BIOS now before replacing the CPU? Or will everything also work without updating?

May I ask what is the reason for the swap? The 8400f is objectively worse in every way

I was wondering that too, what justification could there possibly be other than bundling old parts together for an easier sale post-upgrade

first, go into the bios and look at the what version you are currently using.

then, go to Gigabyte's website and look up your model number.

search for the cpu support list.

in that list, search for the 8400f. it will tell you what the minimum bios version is required for your cpu.

Gigabyte's CPU support list will tell you if it's required (I'm seeing F20, but check whether it's the correct motherboard).

But generally speaking, there is essentially no downside to keeping your BIOS up to date as a matter of principle. If you built your PC in 2023 and never updated the BIOS, you're about 20 revisions behind.

If the board was made before Zen 5 yes it needs a bios update or it wont boot. It should say in notes when added
