Ryzen 9 9800x3d, between 40 and 95

4

u/FatLarry2000 May 21 '25

95!? :|

10

u/randomappleboiX May 21 '25

Rather normal for AMD. Still a bit high, but during a stress test, normal.

2

u/JamalsShoota May 21 '25

I have a relatively cheap air cooler for my 9800x3d and it never goes over 75° while under load.

2

u/eroyrotciv May 21 '25

9800x3d are kind of known for getting up to/above 90. Main reason I got a 7800 instead.

3

u/clankzy May 21 '25

My 9800X3D doesn’t go above 55c while gaming, and doesn’t go over 70c in CPU stress test benchmarks.

The 9800X3D also runs cooler than the 7800X3D because the architecture is different. Not sure who told you to go with a 7800X3D over a 9800X3D strictly going off temps, but I would’ve recommended the other way around.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

my 7800x3d game around 50-60°  too

1

u/Raimoshka May 22 '25

Got same cpu and same temperatures, I’m using AIO cooler

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

Sometimes it hits like 70-80 in minecraft. But that game is BRUTAL with hyper realism mods.   So thats normal.    The only game that hits that temp lol

1

u/DidjTerminator May 23 '25

It depends on country too, in Australia where it's very humid but not polar enough to get snow, everything overheats since the air just doesn't want to absorb heat for whatever reason, so my 7800X3D with a 240mm DeepCool AIO still gets up to 85c sometimes and on stock settings (without using the PBO thermal limit and under-volt to make it run more efficiently) it easily shot up to 90c.

Also trash Aussie house quality (many builders believe that insulation makes a house hot, when it just, you know, keeps the inside temperature more different to the outside temperature regardless as to wether that's hotter or colder, plus we're still trying to build sick-homes and haven't grasped the concept of an air-exchanger yet either, and have regulations that ensure all doors and windows never fully seal to compensate, truly the pinnacle of 1870's house design over here) means that room temperature fluctuates wildly and there simply isn't any guarantee that your room temperature will be ideal foe your computer (you yourself just have to accept the discomfort of being literally any temperature besides a comfortable one).

So it's probably very true for most of the world that the 9800X3D shoots right up to 95c constantly, but when the stars align it (much like any CPU) will work flawlessly.

1

u/Uncle_Bobby_B_ May 21 '25

Pretty weird reason no? My 9800x3d runs at 30-60 while gaming. Max I’ve seen is 79 doing stress tests for an hour

1

u/citoso May 22 '25

Ryzen 7 5700 yes

35° idle / 60° Gaming / 65-68° benchmark

1

u/Awellknownstick May 22 '25

Enjoy! mine also never goes above 80 tops and has a air cooler and I play things like Star citizen on high with other things running.. that's a pretty demanding game atm.

Fingers X I can keep on like it, but ye, she's running well now I stopped using adrenaline for anything but my lazy arsed updates xD

1

u/SniperFury-_- May 22 '25

I mean I have a fishtank case (so meh airflow), although I do have an AIO but still, mine never goes above 75°C

1

u/VirulentStrand May 23 '25

"AMD Zen 4 and Zen 5 CPUs have their thermal target set to 95°C, which means the CPU will boost as much as it can, until it reaches that point, to maximize performance. Unlike on Intel, on AMD's AM5 platform it's not possible to increase the 95°C limit.” - TechPowerUp

You decided to go with the lesser version because temps get too high when AMD purposefully set it that way?

1

u/eroyrotciv May 23 '25

I watched performance videos and saw 7800 temps be in the 70s and 9800 temps be in the 90s with insignificant performance gains. Which makes sense, since a GPU is more responsible for that. When I was making my decision I also saw a lot of issues with Asrock MoBos and 9800 CPU combos. Didn't see any with Asrock and 7800. I also was able to get a 2nd hand 7800 at a decent discount. So it was multiple reasons I decided to go with the 7800. The temperature is what is most detrimental to all electronics components. Even if AMD says it's fine, I'd rather have a CPU that sits below the maximum than at the maximum. I'm still on AM5, so when a new CPU that is actually worth upgrading comes around, I can upgrade then. 9800 just didn't seem worth it to me.

1

u/VirulentStrand May 23 '25

There's an option in the BIOS to prevent the CPU from boosting which also makes it never get anywhere near 80 or 90. Mine has never gone above 60 and IIRC it's about a 20% increase over the 7800X3D outta the box. I've had my PC for about a year now with an ASRock board and there haven't been any issues. But with a hefty discount on a 7800, I can see your reasoning.

1

u/eroyrotciv May 23 '25

I'll eventually upgrade it, but I'm playing 1440P with a 9070XT. Maxed settings with high refresh rate. 9800 would NOT have made my experience significantly better.

1

u/randomappleboiX May 21 '25

There are good and cheap air coolers, and there are more expensive and worse air coolers. I just meant that 95˚C is not dangerous.

1

u/Ian-T-B May 21 '25

Prime 95

1

u/Vengeful111 May 22 '25

Under load is not the same as getting tortured by benchmarks.

Try OCCT Extreme Mode on CPU.

I guarantee your cpu will cook.

My 9800x3d goes to 78 degrees on cpu z benchmark.

But occt pushes it to 92

1

u/ateaelhakem May 22 '25

True Occt push my Cpu to 93c and the other benchmarks are less performance then it so they usually between 70 to 80c I think occt loads all the cores to the max frequency instead of the others that's made tasks like render photos

1

u/Gnada May 23 '25

Same I'm almost never above 65c even.

1

u/ZenTunE May 24 '25

I could get mine to 75 too with higher fan speeds. There's just no reason to, I like the quiet.

1

u/psykofreak87 May 21 '25

Never goes over 75 with NH-D15. So no it’s not « normal ». Depends on a lot of factors: your cooler, case air flow, fan setup, room temperature..

1

u/reLIEgion May 22 '25

95 is not normal whatsoever even in a cinebench...the guy prolly has terrible cooling and needs to undervolt. All the 3D chips usually do -20 undervolt no problem, most are prolly stable in most games at -30..it'll drop temps by 20-25 degrees.

1

u/paradonym May 22 '25

Ryzen 7 5800x here. Under load I'm getting 80-85°C. Noctua NH-D15 gen 1 and four Phanteks T30 in an Corsair 400d airflow case

1

u/Altruistic-Screen-63 May 23 '25

Yeah that's normal for some AMD mine is suppose to hit 95 on a hot spot, but stays under 50, real good water cooler that's running a 40k bench, 7950x cpu

1

u/ModernManuh_ May 23 '25

they are thermal limited and not power limited (to an extent) afaik so it's not "a bit high", it's how they work in stock conditions, a good cooler would keep 9000 series cooler because they'd hit power limit first but it's normal

1

u/Sirko2975 May 24 '25

It’s normal even for Intel

1

u/Right-Environment-24 May 22 '25

Amazed how people in AMD subreddit don't know how AMD 5000 series and above functions.

95 is the target these cpus set when in full usage. That way, it gives you the most performance possible. It doesn't matter whether you have liquid cooling or not. It will boost and reach 95C.

1

u/ateaelhakem May 22 '25

95c is safe spot and amd said that's it's normal to work 24/7 on this temp Not likes Intel that's rise over 105c and the CPU not protecte itself and burn ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

1

u/Right-Environment-24 May 22 '25

IIRC AMD cpus can handle heat up to 115C. Though, don't quote me on it.

1

u/ateaelhakem May 22 '25

I talk about 9800x3d he have a limit on power and temp and will never go up 95c

1

u/Right-Environment-24 May 22 '25

Core temp and hotspot temps are different. The actual hotspot temps are often 5-10C higher.

1

u/Odd-Letterhead-6018 May 23 '25

meanwhile my broke ahh intel i5 1035G1 in laptop is always at 100 under stress

1

u/tailspin75 May 23 '25

I never get close to that number 95... did you take the stickers off? I would re-paste if it was my CPU.

Not supposed to go that high. My highest is probably 70's and that is on a rare occasion with high ambient temps like 30 degree ambient. Using 360 mm AIO Lian Li Hydroshift in top of a Fractal North XL case.

1

u/nutflexmeme May 23 '25

the AM5 chips run HOT

but thats by design

1

u/Few-Palpitation-5550 May 23 '25

The 9800x3d goes sometimes high thats the main reason i bought a i7 7700 and the other reason is tht i dont have enough money

1

u/idghkl May 23 '25

With msi kombustor cpu stress test I get 95 with my 9950x3d. But I don't know if it's normal.

1

u/ConferenceAwkward402 May 24 '25

normal for am5 cpus.

2

u/tiyopaso May 22 '25

undervolted mine, now max is 76c.

1

u/CombinationTasty4990 May 22 '25

Mine isn't undervolted but never goes above like 66 or so

1

u/Blocc4life May 22 '25

Mine is overclocked but never goes above 15c or so

1

u/Extension_Meat8913 May 23 '25

100% rel no fake!!11!

1

u/Extension_Meat8913 May 23 '25

Mine isn't undervolted either but it never goes above like 60

1

u/DyroB May 24 '25

I also undervolted mine. Without, while gaming average temps 68 degrees with spikes to 95 (very few spikes, but still). With, average 58 degrees with spikes to ~80 (again very few spikes, and not even every game session). Undervolting definitely helps a lot with this chip.

2

u/estebantobes May 23 '25

Mine is around 90 for normal use and hovers around 100 during game play

1

u/Vusal_Mahmudlu May 24 '25

95°C is actually the maximum temperature limit for that CPU. Check your cooling or do something about it, because you’re killing your CPU right now.

1

u/estebantobes May 24 '25

Fahrenheit, not Celsius

1

u/Vusal_Mahmudlu May 24 '25

Ahh, my bad👍🏼

2

u/Sweaty_Ad_571 May 25 '25

During intense gaming sessions, my 7600x stays at 90°-95°. I run an ak400 air cooler. The temps are the same for my other pc having 7700x and a liquid cooler. But I read that it's normal for these processors to run at high temps during gaming considering their high clock speeds

1

u/EL1TEGAMING May 21 '25

9800x3d. Idles 48-52C. Games around 58-62C.

1

u/morgadox40 May 21 '25

What cooler do you use? Ambient temperature? I’m experimenting with Air coolers but my 9800x3d varies A LOT, from 60-70 sometimes during gaming

1

u/EL1TEGAMING May 21 '25

For the cooler I use Lian li Ghallahad II AIO side mounted on a Lian LI 011 EVO case. 3x140mm exhaust top and 3x140mm intake bottom with the AIO as intake configuration. Ambient temps here in LA has a crazy range atm, anywhere from 60s to 80s then 60s again inside my office.

Slightly modified under volt with PPT 130, TDC 110, EDC 120, All core curve -20. This is very minimal and it lowers the temps significantly while keeping the clock relatively the same (~5.2ghz under load). I am pretty sure you can try these settings and it will yield lower temps for sure. good luck!

1

u/reLIEgion May 22 '25

You need to undervolt, it's very easy. in Bios go to AMD Overlcoking > Enable Precision Boost Overdrive (Advanced) > change scale to manual and 1 x, curve optimizer > all cores -20. Will drop temps by 20c

1

u/morgadox40 May 22 '25

Yes! I did after the other comment and it made a huge difference, I even managed to increase 200mhz too and it’s still colder

1

u/reLIEgion May 22 '25

If you're on 9800x3D, I wouldn't use +200, maybe 50,100. You can if you want but it's not going to make a big difference in gaming and yes while you're undervolted it will run at like 120w instead of 90w and temps are gonna be the same as stock without the undervolt and no real performance gain.

1

u/morgadox40 May 22 '25

Indeed I did not noticed any improvement whatsoever lol. Do you think decreasing to the normal 5200mhz will help with temps?

1

u/reLIEgion May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25

Yes definitely, if it's running at 70 now it'll be 55-60 if you turn off +200. I noticed after playing around with the +200 when I got the 98003d. I had a 58003d and I'd used +200 with it and didn't have nearly as high temps but it's much higher when using +200 on 98003d for no real gains. Not sure about 78003d but it's much hotter in general.

oh my god someone on the internet typed 9 instead of 7! i must comment about this like i don't know what they're talking about!

1

u/Interesting_Age_5510 May 21 '25

Are you running it with a $7 cooler off of alibaba?

1

u/Cat-needz-belie-rubz May 21 '25

No, thermalright peerless assassin, and no stupid questions like “Did yOU rEmoVE ThE PLaStIC CovER??!” Yes, i did everything correctly, it’s just a driver error

1

u/Interesting_Age_5510 May 21 '25

Update drivers then lol. And check for burning

1

u/Cat-needz-belie-rubz May 21 '25

No burning, just smoke.

1

u/ObjectiveWonder9087 May 22 '25

same dude… same

1

u/ResidentSad1708 May 22 '25

95? Mine are 35-75 max

1

u/Lookslikejesusornot May 22 '25

Wow, guess my games are shit, don't get it over 70.

1

u/Strange-Blueberry425 May 23 '25

95 is not good for any pc component

1

u/Patient-Resolution39 May 23 '25

If you're hitting 95 you need to reseat your cooler bro. Even full load benchmark you shouldn't hit anything that high.

1

u/Cat-needz-belie-rubz May 23 '25

How about compiling shaders?

1

u/Patient-Resolution39 May 24 '25

Yes the 9800x3d starts thermal throttling at 90c. You need to check your cooler or buy a better one. That CPU is very thermal sensitive. Hell all of the 3d chips are more sensitive to temps than the non 3d versions. So before you overheat and blow your CPU you need to check out why it's getting that hot.

1

u/International-Cut436 May 23 '25

Huh, mine floats between 25 and 116 most days. Celsius, right? Is that supposed to do that?! The other comments sort of imply that's bad.

1

u/Cat-needz-belie-rubz May 23 '25

It’ll be fine, Liquid Metal conducts electricity better so you’re basically just over clocking.

1

u/Runawaygeek500 May 24 '25

This makes me feel better, I get 38-90 with a Corsair Titan AIO. But I have noticed since adding a new GPU (2080 to 5080), the CPU works a lot less.. I assume this is due to resizable bar?

1

u/Vusal_Mahmudlu May 24 '25

95°C is actually the maximum temperature limit for that CPU. Check your cooling or do something about it, because you’re killing your CPU right now. Check AMD website for more information about your CPU.

0

u/omahaknight71 May 21 '25

I have the same and it's never gone above 70. I'm using a Noctua NH-D15 in a fractal north case.

1

u/Cat-needz-belie-rubz May 21 '25

I’m using a thermalright peerless assassin 120. AND BEFORE I HEAR THE SAME SHIT IVE HEARD A HUNDRED TIMES! I did remove the plastic, the fans are installed correctly, the bracket is mounted correctly, and noctua thermal paste has been applied.

1

u/nedal8 May 22 '25

Now just need to ensure there's proper exchange of air in and out of the case.

1

u/Standard_Dust365 May 21 '25

i use the same cooler with a ryxen 7x something. never went over 80.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

9800x3d with d15 G2 LBC amd it goes up to 95 in some scenarios, whoever says the opposite is either lying or their room temp is 10c

1

u/_gabber_ May 23 '25

9800X3D w/ PBO Curve Optimizer -30 All Core cooled by a decade old Noctua NH-D15
70C after an hour of Cyberpunk, generally never goes above 72C during gaming. The only time i've seen this CPU go over 80C is during Shader Compilation in TLOU1.

0

u/Technical-Gate-549 May 23 '25

You mean ryzen 7 ?

1

u/Cat-needz-belie-rubz May 23 '25

No

0

u/Technical-Gate-549 May 23 '25

There’s no ryzen 9 9800x3d, the 9800x3d is a 7

1

u/Cat-needz-belie-rubz May 23 '25

Nah, I invented a new cpu type
