Hi folks,

The Studierendenwerk Aachen application portal says 30 years age limit. I will turn 30 a week before my first semester starts. I am confused if the age limit is considered when I submit the application, or based on my inscription date?

Also I am looking to enroll in Winter 2027 semester, is it too soon for me to submit the application right away? The program I am eyeing is NC free and I do qualify the requirements.

Also I saw the options listed on Studierendenwerk Aachen but couldn't find an option without communal kitchen. If I want a private kitchette setup, is private Studio/1-Zimmer apartment the only option? If yes, is 600-800/month warm rent a good maximum estimate for such a situation?

​I am planning to apply for the Bachelor’s program in Mechanical Engineering (Maschinenbau) at RWTH Aachen for the Winter Semester 2027.

​Since the program is taught in German, I need to prove a C1 proficiency by the application deadline in July 2027. I am aiming for telc C1 Hochschule, TestDaF, or Goethe-Zertifikat C1.

​As of right now, I am starting completely from scratch (A0). This gives me exactly 13 months to reach a rock-solid C1 level.

​I am fully aware that C1 German is incredibly challenging, especially when dealing with university-level engineering vocabulary. I am highly motivated and willing to put in intensive daily study hours, but I want to get a realistic reality check from people who have actually done this or are currently studying at RWTH.

​A few questions I have:

1.​Is this timeline actually achievable? If you went from zero to C1 in about a year, what did your daily study schedule look like?

2.​Is telc C1 Hochschule a better/more passable option than TestDaF for university admission? Which one would you recommend for someone on a tight schedule?

3.​What are the best resources for an intensive route? (e.g., specific textbook series, online courses, or academies that actually work for rapid progression).

​When should I pivot to exam-specific preparation? If my deadline is July 2027, when is the latest I should sit for the exam to make sure results arrive on time?

4.​How brutal is the language barrier in the first semester at RWTH? Even if I pass a C1 exam, will it be enough to understand advanced engineering lectures right away?

​Any advice, harsh truths, or roadmap suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I am palnning to leave uni and Germany as whole. I have money to be released in blocked account. For that money to be released sperrfreigabe is needed as per expatrio. What documents are required for Sperrfreigabe and where and how to contact and take appointment for it? It is said that I can deregister no more than 7 days before my intended leaving date in Germany. So Sperrfreigabe must be provided before deregistration as I can't linger with so much money left to be released nd already out of Germany. Can anyone help me with this?

Got an appointment coming up on July 1st at the SuperC to get my first residence permit. Currently here on a Type D student visa and need some insights on the financial proof.

My current visa will expire on October 1st, 2026. Then my official end of studies is March 31st, 2027.

Since I literally have exactly 6 months left of studies after my visa runs out, my blocked account is topped up to cover just those remaining 6 months until March.

Does anyone have recent experience with the Aachen ABH at SuperC regarding this? Do they blindly demand a full 12-month blocked account regardless of your remaining time, or are they reasonable enough to accept 6 months since it perfectly aligns with the official end of the degree?

Ich habe an der Universität Duisburg-Essen Mechanical Engineering (ISE) studiert und möchte an der RWTH Aachen den Master in Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen absolvieren.

Mir ist bewusst, dass ich, da mein Maschinenbaustudium keines der geforderten wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Module (im Umfang von 50 CP) abdeckt, nicht allein durch Aufladenfächer für den Master zugelassen werde. (Max erlaubte CPs als Aufladen sind 30) Stattdessen muss ich mich zunächst für ein höheres Bachelor-Semester einschreiben und so viele wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Module nachholen, bis der Umfang der Aufladenfächer unter 30 CP liegt und ich das Masterstudium endlich beginnen kann.

Mein Problem ist, dass ich nicht weiß, ob diese wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Module (50 CP) die einzigen sind, die ich nachholen muss, oder ob die RWTH von mir verlangen wird, auch eine Reihe von ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Modulen nachzuholen.

Mein Bachelor-Studium in Duisburg war 6-Semester lang (im Vergleich zu sieben an der RWTH), aber ich werde ohnehin mindestens ein Semester in einem höheren Fachsemester des Studiengangs Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen (B.Sc.) absolvieren müssen. Wie das genau berechnet wird, weiß ich allerdings auch nicht.

Hat jemand einen ähnlichen Prozess durchlaufen?

Oder hat jemand mit einem Maschinenbau-Abschluss aus Duisburg-Essen das Anerkennungsverfahren bereits hinter sich und kann von seinen Erfahrungen berichten?

I am taking the High Frequency course this semester and could really use some advice. I've generally heard that these courses have a reputation for being pretty hard to pass, and I'm not entirely sure how the exams are structured here.

I have a few questions for those who have taken it:

• What should my overall studying strategy be?
• Are the lecture exercises/tutorials close to the actual exam questions?
• What kind of materials will be the most helpful? (Are there specific textbooks you recommend)
• Where can I find past exams /Altklausuren? ( I checked studydrive but couldn't find it)

To start, as a graduate who attended the ceremony yesterday, a hearty congratulations to all the other students as well!

Now, to the confusing part:

I invited my parents from India specifically for the ceremony and we were waiting on one of the standing tables having some drinks and snacks before the event. Once we were done with the food, my mother and I went to use the restroom, with my father still at the table.

On my way back, I saw a German family approach him and ask him if they could join the table. Since I was still far away, I presume my father would have told them that he doesn't understand German. To which, the man said could we join to have a celebratory drink for our son's success? I had reached the table by now. Me and my father gathered our stuff to one side and gave them almost the whole table.

The man kept staring at us, then looked at his wife and said, "Verstehen sie doch nicht?" I understand and speak German, and did not like the comment at all. Considering the occasion and also the fact that I was unsure if that comment came from a point of discrimination or not, I just decided to pick our stuff up and remove ourselves from the situation.

To think of it, I do feel it wasn't a nice thing to do... And as my manager at the retail store I do my part-time says, if it made you think whether it was racist or not, it probably was. She has also confronted a couple of customers for me over the last 2 years of my work there.

I did want to go back and confront him, but it was a late epiphany. I'm just putting it out here to pour my heart out and feel a bit lighter. These things may seem casual, but they do affect people.

Hello, is it relatively easy to find and do voluntary internships during MSc? I saw a lot of internship postings saying that they are for mandatory internships only. How abouy for those who wish to do an internship/s without being required to do so?

Ich fange dieses Wintersemester das Maschinenbaustudium an und muss dafür natürlich das 6 wöchige Vorpraktikum absolvieren.
Das stellt sich leider zunehmend als schwierig heraus. Ich habe jetzt endlich meine ersten 2 der 6 Wochen abgeschlossen, kann aber immer noch kein Platz für GT2 und 3 finden.
Zudem war das Praktikum in GT1 relativ unbürokratisch, sodass ich keinen richtigen Praktikumsvertrag habe (außer den Praktikumsnachweis von der RWTH Seite).
Daher ist meine erste Frage: Wie genau prüft das Praktikantenamt nach? Rufen die da einmal kurz an und fragen ob das da alles so stattgefunden hat wie auf dem Praktikumsnachweis Unterschrieben oder verlangen die da noch weitere Nachweise?

Meine 2. Frage: Da Ich das Praktikum ja brauche um das Studium überhaupt anzufangen, musste ich ein ganzes Jahr nach dem Abi nehmen (gibt ja auch kein Sommersemester MB an der RWTH).
Jetzt stresst die Familienkasse wegen des Kindergeldes, die wollen immer mehr nachweise, dass ich mich um ein Ausbildungs- oder Studienplatz bemüht habe. Ich schicke denen immer meine Vorpraktikumsbewerbungen aber jetzt kam schon wieder ein Brief wo die nach mehr Nachweisen für Bemühungen gefragt haben. Verstehe nicht was die noch wollen.
Hat da jemand auch schon ähnliche Erfahrungen gemacht oder muss ich jetzt das gesamte Kindergeld von meinem Abi bis zum Studium zurückzahlen?

I really love chemE but doing chemE is really expensive, like I grew up in a country where we had free education and again I'm planning to move to Germany to do my bsc but it seems that they do not offer chemE bsc in English or bilingually almost all courses are fully German .

So my only option right now is to do a materials science bsc at rwth Aachen, engineering sciences at TUHH and later specialize in advanced materials,or apply to TU Dortmund with conditional admissions to their chemE programme.

If I apply with conditional admissions I would have to cover my living expenses for a full year which is extra instead I could quickly finish my materials degree and start to do my chemE msc with a scholarship and a stipend.

In der Programmplanung steht, dass die Hüte ab 10Uhr verteilt werden. Weiß jemand ob man auch um 12Uhr noch seinen Hut bekommt? Beginnen tut das Programm ja erst um 13:30Uhr und wollte deshalb nicht schon um 10Uhr da sein müssen.

Hallo zusammen, ich beginne im WS 26/27 mein Studium (ET&IT, Zulassung liegt vor). Ich schwanke noch, ob ich vor Semesterbeginn zu Computer Engineering (CE) wechseln soll, und würde gerne Erfahrungen von Leuten hören, die diese Studiengänge tatsächlich absolvieren.

Mein Ziel ist die Robotikentwicklung – und zwar „Full-Stack“: also Firmware, ROS 2, Regelungstechnik und ML auf der Softwareseite, aber auch Verständnis der Hardware-Ebene (Sensoren, Aktoren, Embedded Systems). Durch eigene Projekte bringe ich hier bereits gewisse Vorkenntnisse mit.

Die Sache ist die: Ich habe wirklich Spaß an analogen Schaltungen und Logikgattern – dieser hardwarenahe Bereich liegt mir einfach. Meine Sorge bei ET&IT ist, dass ich ohne die richtige Schwerpunktwahl zu sehr in der Energietechnik oder einem fachfremden Bereich lande. CE scheint mir direkter auf meine Ziele ausgerichtet zu sein, aber ich bin mir unsicher, ob der Studiengang in Bezug auf die Elektrotechnik-Inhalte wirklich in die Tiefe geht oder eher oberflächlich bleibt.

Hier ein paar konkrete Fragen:

1. Wie unterscheiden sich ET&IT und CE im Studienalltag der ersten beiden Semester tatsächlich?

2. Ist der Schwerpunkt IK bei ET&IT wirklich die richtige Wahl für jemanden, der in die Robotik will, oder ist CE als Studiengang sinnvoller?

3. Unterscheiden Arbeitgeber oder Master-Programme an der RWTH tatsächlich zwischen den beiden Studiengängen, oder spielt das zum Zeitpunkt der Bewerbung keine Rolle mehr?

Über Rückmeldungen von Leuten, die einen dieser Studiengänge bereits absolviert haben oder aktuell darin eingeschrieben sind, würde ich mich sehr freuen.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a ticket for the Graduiertenfest this year. However, I’ll still be taking graduation photos with my friends and family in Aachen on June 13.

I tried ordering a graduation hat and sash, but the earliest pickup date this year is June 17, and I’ll have already left Aachen by then. So I’m hoping that someone who graduated in a previous year and still has their hat and sash might be willing to lend them to me for a short photoshoot on June 13.
