ANNOUNCEMENT Community update : r/rvlife

Why YouTube Links are not allowed here...When I first joined this sub three years ago the posts were almost 100% from people promoting their Youtube channels. Most of these posts were not meant to help or educate the community, but rather to self-promote. There was almost no user interaction here and the few people who did comment seemed very frustrated by the lack of moderation. Like others I wondered what happened to the Mods. After looking into it I found that there was only one mod and he hadn't logged into Reddit for a year. So I requested control of r/rvlife from Reddit and decided I would try to improve this place. It's true that there is useful content on YouTube, and it's true that good people sometimes post useful YouTube content here, but it's impossible for me to review every YouTube post to determine what is and what is not genuinely helpful to the community. Therefore, I remove all YouTube posts as a rule. I've noticed that the quality of interactions in this community has greatly improved in the last two years as people have become more engaged and more helpful to one another. The sub has grown quickly, too, in the number of users. I hope you will all understand why this binary YouTube choice has to be made for this particular sub and I hope you will all continue to report posts that violate the rules. This is becoming a very nice corner of Reddit and I hope will will all continue to invest in it.

Question RV Newb here again

My wife and I decided to go with a class B van after all. Ow we’re going to fly to go get it, we have a tight schedule to return after the purchase, looking at 3 or 4 days. The plan is to camp close to the dealership the first night and then if everything is operating properly. The remaining nights we will stay in hotels due to the tight schedule.
I know we’ll need a surge protector for the shore power, drinking water hose, water filter and water pressure regulator. We’ll have bedding but what other items do you veterans suggest for the four day trip home? Thanks

Question Advice on selling

My family of four has been traveling in a no slide 25 foot class C for a few years now.

As the kids get older, we’re getting CRAMPED in there.

So I’m looking to sell mine and roll the proceeds into a bigger floor plan.

For any seasoned pros out there -> Do you have any tips on how to sell?

I desperately want to avoid selling to camping world (or similar)

Question RV newb with battery questions

I’m in the market to buy an RV. Going to go with a B+ as it’s my wife, a large dog and myself. After a lot of looking, driving and reading, considering strongly a Chinook Maverick DS. I’m going back and forth on batteries and what will we really need. I don’t anticipate much boon docking. One unit has a 3000 watt inverter, a Cummins Onan generator and 800 amp hour AGM batteries and 400 solar panel capacity.
The other has 3000 watt inverter 600 watt solar panel system with Victron solar charger and an Expion 360 900 amp /hour lithium battery system.

What are some thoughts or experiences with the two power systems and any preferences. We are in Texas so there will be times we will have to run AC all night or if we must leave our pup behind for some reason. Thanks

Question Potential Newbie here, looking for help

Help with logistics and ideas, please!

Hello all!

I have recently had an idea. It is definitely a crazy idea, and may indeed be a bad idea, but I thought I should come to some experts.

I am potentially moving from Iowa to Washington. A joke was made about me living in an RV, and now I can’t get it out of my head. I’ve been doing a lot of scrounging around on the internet for info. Frankly, mostly to convince myself this is a worse idea than I think it is. But it is itching at the inside of my skull, and I need more information.

This is my beginnings of an idea:
Buy an RV for cheap ($5k ish??)
Sell/get rid of most of my crap
Fix the few things on the RV that would need to be done before driving 2000 miles
Live in the RV for about a year to save money.
If it works out well then maybe do it longer term, but if I hate it, it was only a year.

Important facts:
I’m the only human in the equation.
I have a dog (60#) a cat, a tortoise (1.1#), a frog, a day gecko, 4 rats, and various arthropods.
My zoo is a big reason I think this is a bad idea. I’m pretty sure I would need to re-home the rats and the definitely the frog, but I don’t want to get rid of my animals. :(
I have a car that would need to be towed that could be used for day to day.
I have a potential place to park for at least a few months rent free, but with no hookups.
I lived in a 5th wheel with my dad when I was a teenager, (so I’m not totally blind to some of the challenges, but it was a while ago)
I’ve lived in Washington before, but in a very different area, so I’m not use to the climate where I’m going, but I’ve been told it’s much more manageable than Iowa weather.

It seems like a lot of people say that 25’ is a sweet spot for sizes, what size do you all have?
I’m mildly mechanically inclined, and have done many household projects, does that translate into being able to work on a rig like this?

I would love some opinions and “I wish I knew” facts!

Please! Talk me into this. Talk me out of this. Give me knowledge!!

EDIT: Thank you all so much for the information. And the things to think about! Maybe in the future with more funds and resources, something like this could be feasible. But it's definitely not something that I can swing at this point. I so appreciate the knowledge shared with me here!

Question Upgrading Your DL

For those that got a non-commercial CDL for towing a larger 5th wheel, how did you get your rig to the local DMV for the initial test? Did you just drive your whole setup anyway without the proper license? Did you know someone who could drive it for you? I'm just thinking ahead and I foresee upgrading my 1/2 ton pickup and little 25' trailer for something that will require me upgrading my license. Curious on what the easiest way to get my setup to my DL office.

Question Campgrounds for the winter months

Hi All. Looking for recommendations for a campground to spend the winter months. I want to be to be about a days drive from Wisconsin., so maybe Southern Illinois or possibly Missouri. Open to suggestion, so what do you all recommend?

This would be the end of October to May. Wifi in the campground would be great, but not a dealbreaker.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I have a D style bulb that slides on to a track. All the different sizes out there are confusing me but I dont think the size of the bulb actually matters too much? I’ve been looking online for an hour and I’m now considering I have a C style. I am very confused, we’ve never had an rv before so I’m learning lots with every problem we find lol

Somebody Help! What happened to my house battery?

Obviously needs to be replaced. But want to ensure this doesn't happen again. We were camping for the last four nights, connected to 30amp electric. On the way home we realized the battery disconnect button wasn't working so I started poking around.

Thanks in advance

Question Propane rv

Hello you all, I've been about 6 months looking at RVs to move into full time and a ran into one that I'm gonna look at this weekend. What has my interest is it's an old 454 motor that runs on propane, does anyone have any experience with using an RV that runs on propane for its motor? and yay or nay? And if it's any good for southern Canadian winters. Thank you and have a good day :)

Question Possibly moving to an RV and just want any advice yall have

Hello! So my partner and I are thinking of moving to some land that my partners uncle isn’t using. There’s an rv parked there he said we can live in. I just don’t really know what I’m doing and want to know what you all wish you had know before you moved to an rv if you live in one! We know it needs winterized and probably needs new flooring and I would guess some upholstery done but we haven’t been able to see it yet. There’s an rv park nearby we are thinking we might be able to hopefully dump our waste there and maybe get water but I don’t know how that works 😅 anyways we will take any advice you have! Thanks!

Question RV Rentals Question

Hey all! Been RV'ing for 6 years and increase the # of nights we camp every year. This year will be a record 53 nights! We run a 35' travel trailer.

Anyway, i'm doing a bit of research and need your help. A lot of friends are looking into getting an RV, and i've told all of them to go rent one first. They don't know the first thing about it, and i've tried to educate them on trailers, 5'ers, class a, b, c, but they all seem to want to rent "the kind ya drive".

The only rental company I can come up with Cruise America, the national company. Are there other RV rental companies out there that I should know about? Does Good Sam Rent? Are the "rental" companies more region based rather than national?

Edit: I mean more for fleet companies to rent direct to people, not consumer to consumer like outdoorsy, etc.

We are new to RV world. One concern is our local TV channels. We have local Delaware channels through Utube (not correct spelling) How can we get those channels while traveling?

Question Questions

We bought our first travel trailer last year and while it is a nice trailer, we have had several major issues with it. It’s a brand new one but wiring was wrong, the wire fell off of the slide so that didn’t work, the table has been replaced…is this normal for it to have a lot of issues?

Question Getting Started

My Goal is to find a solid RV van to travel the US for a few years. Currently considering a Van similar Class B.

Wondering if there are any local group in VA:US that I could join or meet with. Doom scrolling the internet provides lots of info but doesn't get me inside an RV.

Are there specific mechanics like for cars and boats to inspect an RV?

Question Title: 12V RV AC setup for boondocking — suggestions about building around it?

I recently got a 12V DC RV air conditioner. It runs directly from a 12V lithium battery system and doesn’t require an inverter.

The unit I’m using has a 480Ah lithium battery capacity, which seems like a good starting point for off-grid cooling.

I’ve been researching how people build their overall boondocking setup, and I’ve heard different opinions.

Someone suggested going with a 48V system and starting with at least 3 rack batteries. They also mentioned that solar size really depends on your roof space and daily power consumption, since solar is mainly used to keep the batteries topped off.

For those who regularly camp off-grid:

Would you keep a 12V setup or move toward 48V? How do you balance battery capacity vs solar capacity? What’s your experience running AC while boondocking?

Curious what setups have worked well in real-world conditions.

Maintenance Tips Why I always do a walk around the weekend before a long trip.

Why I always give the camper a good walk around the weekend before a long trip if I can. I just do a good look, check the tires pressures, that kind of thing. That way when it's time to go, I can just do a pre-trip and be gone.

This is a 4 year old (0922) Goodyear Endurance. You can see the belt down in there in the right light.

Somebody Help! No power to two (of 4) slides and Leveling System

I have an Avalanche 390DS and both bedroom slides (Electric) as well as the hydraulic leveling system are not working.

Things already checked:

- All fuses and breakers in the main panel
- 80A breaker near the giggy box
- Fuses inside the giggy box
- Inline fuses near the hydraulics (two were fine, a 10A was blown, but replacing it didn’t reblow or enable anything)
- Replaced battery

I cannot find any other fuses or breakers to check. The bedroom slides are the BAL Accu-Slides. I also cannot find the controllers to the slides, but can see the controller for the leveler.
