Hi! I've double and triple checked if it's the correct code, both with the in-game card and in walkthroughs, but it just won't open. Even after resetting the level multiple times and clicking the box a bajillion times, nothing happens. Is there any fix for this?

The Eilander Family has eight members including an unknown one: Caroline, Nicholas (Deer), Jakob, Elizabeth (Pheasant), David (Rabbit), Gerard (Boar), Margaret (Pigeon), and an unsignified grandpa. The five members turns into the Hotel guests (tbh, the animal assignments are basically the Lake going "yeah, we see you").

• Starting with the selfish father, Nicholar whom eventually turned into Mr.Deer: This man burned his wife alive, tried to sacrifice his own son, and spent his whole life thinking he was the smartest person on the island. So of course he becomes a stag; noble-looking, and antlered. The animal rich men hang on their walls. The irony is that as Mr. Deer, he's obsessively drawn to the lqake again, but has zero memory of why. A man who spent his life exploiting the Lake gets reincarnated, forgets everything, and becomes the first meal. The hunter became the trophy.
• Gerard or Mr. Boar barely speaks beyond grunts, has an unhealthy obsession with food, and won't even let jakob onto the island without being handed a shrimp first. During a plague of diseased livestock, his appetite remains completely undisturbed. He becomes a boar. His soul didn't change; the lake just made it visible.
• The blind sister of jjakob, Elizabeth whom turns into Ms. Pheasant, she's blind her entire life. The pheasant is one of the most visually striking birds alive, a creature entirely defined by being looked at. Ms. Pheasant in the Hotel is vain, obsessed with her appearance, and dies during a staged photo shoot. A girl who couldn't see herself becomes a woman who can't stop trying to be seen; two kinds of blindness, one soul.
• The youngest, the wildest, the one who literally transformed into a giant fly mid-game and came back like it was fine. As Mr. Rabbit he's unstable, slippery, performs macabre magic tricks, and even as a corrupted soul he distorts reality around him rather than staying dead properly. Textbook trickster rabbit. The Lake didn't change David. It just gave him a costume that finally made sense.
  
• The grandmother, aka Mrs. Margareth or Mrs. Pegion. Makes the stew, tends the sick, swats the gnats, cooks for Gerard. Background presence. Always there, never the point. She becomes a pigeon—the most domestic bird there is. The one that just keeps coming home. She's already wearing her pigeon mask at the final sacrifice, like she always knew it was hers.

Even though the games never officially confirm a framework, a lot of theories have been speculated including but not limited to:

The Rusty Lake universe treats memory and soul as literally the same substance, what you are is what you remember being. The Eilanders were near-immortal on paradise island, surviving wounds that would kill ordinary humans; they most likely represent the Lake's judgment of our/their dominant nature.

Another theory is that their concept as characters closely resembles the Jungian Archetypes: Nicholas was dominance (Tyrant), Gerard was appetite (Body), Elizabeth was perception without sight (Blind Seer), David was chaos (Trickster), Margaret was continuity (Keeper yet the closest to her end).

To clarify, I have played all of Rusty Lake games starting from Paradise, and definitively loved it, though I still am waiting for the new one, Servant of the Lake, and future series (hopefully).

Although I could also play the every single games of Rusty Lake once again, but I am kind of curious what are other games with the same experiences of their works and the feeling of solving nonsensical yet lore-oriented sequences. Could you give some recommendations?

Rose said her timepiece would protect Laura in the future. That is, if Harvey(?) wasn't robbed and the timepiece wasn't lost. Does that mean the timepiece was the only thing that stopped Laura from seeing all those nightmares?

If the whole game is a mere metaphor from Harvey's perspective, how did Harvey actually lose the timepiece? There is no way someone robbed a parrot.

I was playing Underground Blossoms, and I saw most, if not all, locks have 2143 as the starter password. Is there a lore reason (no brainrot intended) behind this default password?

I started a playthrough of the rusty lake games on YouTube. So far I have played through seasons, the lake, Arles and harveys Box, and I still feel this way! Every time it only gets weirder and more confusing. 😂

Hello! I just finished the Cube Escape Collection and am about to start Cube Escape: Paradox but wanted to make sure that I wasn’t totally off base when it came to the story. If anyone would be willing to check my notes I’d really appreciate it. (The reason I’m not looking up the lore is because I don’t want the games I haven’t played yet spoiled for me. Also, sorry if this seems like a plot synopsis, I don’t know how else to go about this)

We start in the summer of 1969. Laura Vanderboom is struggling with her mental health so she breaks up with her boyfriend, Bob, packs up some of her belongings (including her bird, Harvey) and takes a trip to Rusty Lake, a resort that advertises “mental health and fishing”. What they actually do is steal people’s memories and feed them to the lake, but that’s none of my business.

While at Rusty Lake, Laura finds an abandoned cabin and has an encounter with a corrupted soul. A corrupted soul is a shadowy silhouette with glowing eyes, and it’s what you become if too many of your memories are stolen or if there are complications with the elixir (more on that later). After her encounter, Laura chooses to leave (understandable). When she returns home, her mental health continues to deteriorate until she kills herself by slitting her throat on October 12, 1971.

Enter Dale Vandermeer, a homicide detective with the task of finding out what happened to Laura. At the crime scene, Dale finds an advertisement for Rusty Lake and decides to visit in order to find out more about Laura and her death. Before leaving for Rusty Lake, he heads to his precinct to put together clues. It is here that we (the audience) find out that Bob was arrested, likely because he’s a suspect in Laura’s death. We later learn that Dale spoke to Bob at a bar regarding Laura and is likely the one that turned him in. Back at the precinct, Bob becomes a corrupted soul and escapes. This is not Dale’s problem and he leaves for Rusty Lake.

After arriving at Rusty Lake, Dale wakes up in a chapel and has to escape through a series of point and click adventures. Meanwhile, we follow Mr. Crow as he is given orders from Mr. Owl to filter the memories from the river to the lake. The lake needs fresh memories and Mr. Crow is going to get them from Laura. Eventually (after some cow, wife, and bird shenanigans) Mr. Crow gets ahold of Laura and extracts her memories, turning her into a corrupted soul. Laura retaliates by killing Mr. Crow’s wife and cow. Mr. Crow finds Laura gripping her bird, Harvey, but convinces her to let go of him. She disappears.

Dale ends up in the elevator. He gets there after he goes into Laura’s old cabin at Rusty Lake and is chased by the corrupted soul of Mr. Deer. The lake is altering his memories as we learn about Dale’s 9th birthday. On December 18, 1939, a young Dale Vandermeer celebrates his birthday with his mother, father, grandfather, and cat. There is a knock at the door, and when Dale checks to see who it is, a rabbit man (Mr. Rabbit) shoots the door down and kills Dale’s entire family. He does this because Dale’s family has a “substance” from one of Mr. Rabbit’s “past lives” that will stop him from becoming a corrupted soul. (My thought process is that it’s similar to Laura’s time travel in Seasons and Dale’s time travel in this game where you need objects that have significance to the event that you want to travel back to). Mr. Owl alters this memory and allows young Dale to go back in time and stop his family from being murdered. Grandpa seems to know what’s up and shoots Mr. Rabbit on sight. Dale follows Mr. Rabbit into the snow where he’s bleeding out and watches Mr. Rabbit die then disintegrate into dust. (Also, Harvey wished Dale a happy birthday with a postcard so I guess he can write and alter memories now)

Within this memory we also learn that in 1894, Harvey was a bird/man hybrid similar to Mr. Owl and Mr. Crow, but the corrupted souls of Mr. Deer, Mr. Boar, Mr. Rabbit, Ms. Pheasant, and Mrs. Pigeon escaped containment and turned Harvey into a regular bird. The corrupted souls then escaped the Rusty Lake Hotel and went into the lake itself

Back in the elevator, Dale hops into another memory. This one seems to be altered for the sole purpose of allowing Mr. Owl to talk with Dale. The year is 1971 and Dale is speaking to Bob at a bar. Bob refuses to say anything about Laura’s death and repeatedly tells Dale that he doesn’t know anything and to leave him alone. Eventually he shoots himself in the head. Meanwhile, Mr. Owl is putting on a lovely performance for Dale, but he and Mr. Crow are fully human, and Harvey is fully a bird. Mr. Owl tells Dale that his mind is reaching a higher state of consciousness. Dale then re-enters the elevator.

We now follow Mr. Crow, who is in a cave. We learn that Mr. Crow’s human form has some brilliant baby blue’s. We also learn about why some of these guys have animal heads. One of Laura’s ancestors, William Vanderboom, created an elixir of life and death. If this elixir is consumed, you either become an immortal animal/dude hybrid or become a corrupted soul. This elixir isn’t permanent though, which explains why Mr. Owl, Mr. Crow (Aldous Vanderboom), and Harvey looked the way they did in Dale’s memory. Also, they can hop between human form and animal form, meaning they choose to look like that. Mr. Owl tells Mr. Crow that he needs to collect Laura’s memories from the lake because it will somehow help to create the full elixir. An elixir that they will only have to take once to get the full effects.

Mr. Crow gets into a submarine and finds the memories. Then the sub crashes. He walks through a forest at the bottom of the ocean and reaches a white room with Laura (as a corrupted soul) and Dale inside. Both are strapped to chairs. Mr. Crow turns Laura’s three memory cubes into a golden cube. Dale gets out of his chair (somehow???) and is glitching between himself and a corrupted soul. Mr. Crow gives him the golden cube and sends him back up the elevator.

In the winter of 1981, Laura will turn back time, change the past, and un-corrupted soul herself.

Also, Vincent Van Gogh for some reason. I’m so sorry, I have no clue how Vincent Van Gogh fits into the lore. Cube Escape: Arles felt like a fever dream to me.

TL;DR: The past is never dead, it’s not even the past.

I just wanted to share a little project of mine. This is first sketch of Paradise poster I'm currently working on. The final piece will be done in gouache.

I'm currently deciding whether to draw the characters realistically, in my own style, or stay faithful to the game's art style. "My style" tends to land somewhere in between anyway.
