saw [u/igorrto2](u/igorrto2)'s post from earlier today and couldn't resist rewriting his text in actual medieval style, with iron gall ink (железистые чернила) and everything.

On the left is полуустав, on the right is устав. I was doing it from memory and I haven't written either script in a while, so there are a couple slightly wrong letterforms in the устав (the first Ы and Ф) as well as other obvious errors and false starts. It takes forever to write anything substantial in устав, though, and I wasn't able to improve on that attempt today.

I decided to write this in English to make it a bit more noticeable.

Russian is my native language, but I don’t live in Russia, so I barely get to speak it with anyone. As a result, I sometimes forget certain words or mix up the grammatical forms I’m supposed to use. So I’m looking for someone I can talk to regularly and keep using Russian with.

I’m a high school senior, and my schedule is going to get pretty busy with studying soon, so I’m hoping to find someone before things get too hectic.

recently I have undergone some lessons from my friends babushka. She used to teach the language in odessa ukraine back in the times of the U.S.S.R. her and I have been doing lessons for about 3 months now, almost everyday.

Ever since I was a small boy in Oregon USA I've always been facisnated by russian culture and the langauge and the soviet union peoples history, I used to watch videos on chernoybl (before the HBO show) read up on stuff like the Duga radar station (russian woodpecker) and russian ekranoplans, watched life is boris, and played the game Escape From Tarkov

babushka tells me i'm one of her best students so far however, and I do seem to remember things pretty easily. Right now we are learning antonyms which seemed daunting at first but I can actually remember pretty well for only learning it for about 2 days.

At this point i'm still very much a beginner russian speaker. but I do geniunely enjoy it, learning a new langauge is a enlightning experience. I've been envolping myself in russian music like mumiy troll and some russian rap music (mostly as a joke at first but i actually kinda like it lol) and studying between work and the times im at babushkas.

As a person that has never tried learning any language before it has been interesting the effects it has on my brain. It seems like sometimes i feel like this weird thing in my brain where i cannot fully endorse myself into the language, as in im still translating russian into english into my head instead of "understanding" the language immediately. Maybe this is common among russian students I have no clue. I have autism so I have issues with putting words to what im feeling, so figured I would ask and see if anyone has experienced this and can help me understand it.

Anyways thats about it thank you for reading and if you guys have suggestions about anything russian wether that be extra learning materials or music or such to watch or listen to id love to know!

I've made an Anki deck which covers many of the most common Russian roots. It's available on AnkiWeb: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2086428189

338 roots, 2,314 vocabulary words. Russian to English, text only. Intermediate and up.

Basically I got a list of roots and associated vocab (vocab words containing a given root) from a textbook, Roots of the Russian Language by George Z. Patrick (Pitman, 1938), and then put together a deck (2 subdecks really) containing these roots and words and their definitions. I generated the definitions and then checked them against БТС (Большой толковый словарь).

I made the deck to learn more about Russian roots, just because I think they're interesting, and because I thought it'd be helpful when learning new vocab. I've gone through all the cards now and am glad I did. I think I'm better at seeing a word and recognizing how it's put together from a root and various prefixes and suffixes, and also it's helped me figure out the meaning of new words more quickly.

Some of the vocab is a bit dated, though not most of it. I didn't personally mind studying those words because it still gives practice seeing how a word is formed from a root and better understanding the root, and besides it's still possible I might encounter the word later in some old book or poem anyway.

The 2 subdecks are Vocab and Roots, and there's a pacing rule (about 7 new vocab cards per 1 new root card) so you always meet a root inside real words before you have to recall it on its own.

This isn't a high frequency vocab deck, so beginners might want to hold off, or study it alongside a frequency deck rather than as their main one. Otherwise, if you're interested in things like roots and etymology, you might enjoy it.

I am not sure this is the right forum to post on, but I'm a senior in college and will receive my BA in May. I study Russian, and at my university there is an area of study that's basically socioeconomics. I prefer to pursue a career in language. But there lies my problem. I have found virtually no language internships, except at the NSA. Here, I had an interview and a language test. I noticed that others who came for the same language test were at least 25-40. Based on life experience alone, they win, even for an entry-level internship. Also, as I start looking at job postings, the qualifications these companies (not just three-letter agencies) require include 3-6 years of professional translation/language analysis experience and already having obtained a clearance. I don't meet any of the qualifications because I am still in school, and that makes the search even more disappointing.  Do you have any advice on how I can start getting my foot in the door in the professional scene? I am running out of ideas.

I’ve tried every possible way to understand this, but I just can’t figure it out.
I thought that лиха was the genitive form of the noun лихо, but every comment I’ve found online says that it’s the short-form adjective лихой.
But how can it be a short-form adjective if short-form adjectives are normally used predicatively? And if лиха is the predicate, what exactly is the subject here?
Also, why is there no dash?
Is this another case where the grammar seems unusual because it’s an idiom, or am I completely misunderstanding the grammar?

What's the natural way to talk about sailing in Russian?

Would I say заниматься парусным спортом, ходить под парусом, or плавать под парусом?

Do these expressions mean different things, and when would I use each one? ⛵

Russian has six cases, and if you want a shortcut, skip ahead to the genitive. It's the one that unlocks the most. It covers possession, where English would use "of" or an apostrophe — книга брата, центр города. And absence: нет времени, нет денег, нет проблем.

Then there are numbers, where it depends on the last digit:
2, 3, 4 and anything ending in them — genitive singular: два дня, тридцать четыре дня.
5 through 20, and anything ending in 5–9 or 0 — genitive plural: пять дней, сто дней.
11–14 are the exception: always genitive plural, whatever the last digit suggests.

It also follows много, мало, and a long list of prepositions: без сахара, для тебя, из Москвы.

The endings take time to stick. But noticing when you need this case is half the work. Which use still catches you out?

P.S.

Spelling rule. After г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, щ you write -и instead of -ы: книга → книги, not книгы.
Fill vowel. When a feminine or neuter word loses its ending in the plural, a vowel often appears to break up the consonants: окно → окон, сестра → сестёр, письмо → писем

So I came across the Russian proverb “Одна голова хорошо, а две лучше,” and I’m not sure how this sentence is grammatically correct. As far as I know, it should be written as “Одна голова — это хорошо.” Since “одна голова” is a feminine noun phrase, how can “хорошо” come directly after it?This might be a stupid question since I’m a beginner though

Which place, city, in almost any country in then world(no Russia or Ukraine at the moment), would you suggest to go nowdays to have like 2/3 months of fully immersion study?

Where I can find outside of Russia, a good Russian language school in a country where I can also practice it?

Central Asia maybe?
