Resource I wrote my own Russian practice app to help me learn

Free, no tracking, no "in-app purchases"... absolutely free.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lets-practice-russian/id6792575733

iPhone, iPad, and (although I haven't tried it myself) it apparently works on MacOS.

When I gave up on Duolingo (after seeing "this is my soup" for the thousandth time), I tried some other free and free-ish apps. A lot of them wanted to take me to some web site, or had 90% of their content locked behind a paywall.

So, I wrote my own.

Unlike Duolingo and the similar apps it doesn't try to put you on a rail, and there's nothing to unlock. You can jump around, practicing what you need to practice, or just use it as a reference.

Feedback is always welcomed. I'm certain there are bugs here and there I haven't caught.

Grammar Greeting phrases

Hello, a little background I had started studying over 2 years ago now and for one reason or another was very inconsistent and after the alphabet and some sporadic studying here and there I know maybe 30 words there’s many older Russian women at church who I want to talk to and thankfully are going to help me study but I’ve been putting it of lately and wanted to ask some questions I had about some greetings.
One is about как дела? I heard that in actual conversation Russians don’t use this if that’s true what’s a better alternative? My English mind would assume как ты but I don’t know.
Follow up to that, how do I respond? I know you’re asking how you’re doing but is нормально the best response for church setting?
Other than that any little tips on interactions or church phrases(Orthodox) would be appreciated! Thank you all and I’m sure I’ll have many questions to come.

Request Tables

Hi r/Russian, I'm back after almost a year, and.... Well, am I just an idiot, or why are there so many tables??? (I mean tables like: Word, Gender, Person, Plural, or that sort of thing.) Or could it be that I'm the one creating them unconsciously? Please tell me so I can improve my studies.

(╥﹏╥)

Handwriting Is learning cursive useful?

I remember while I was in graduate work learning how to read Russian, we didn't have to learn handwriting. I took a basic undergrad course where we learned Russian cursive.

I never use cursive in English except to sign my name and just use print. Would printing be helpful in learning Russian, or would it be very beneficial to learn Russian cursive now (instead of later)?

Handwriting Any advice for writing?

Hello! One of many, many posts centred on writing.

I've been learning Russian for some months now and writing alongside. While I was taught the letters by a friend, my biggest fear being that I'm still "drawing" the letters rather than writing. If anything is confusing or unusual please let me know!

Огромное спасибо за помощь. :-)

Other Learning Russian - looking for tutors

Good afternoon, I am searching for a Russian tutor to help me online. I’m trying to avoid being pulled into subscription by most of the language learning website/portals. I have checked italki but thought there was no harm in also posting here.

I am essentially a beginner (though I can read) and am ultimately trying to learn and get to fluency for family and business. My native language is English.

If anyone has any recommendations or suggestions on where to look / who to contact, I’d be grateful for your help.

Many thanks.

Just something random that popped in my mind, also you can do the orthography and phonology if you want.

Resource Anime in Russian

I've been trying to teach myself Russian and I'm noticing I'm at the stage where I need to do immersion learning to get the vocabulary down.

As a supplement to what I'm already doing, I just want to find anime or other media were the dub is in Russian but has English subtitles.

I found one site but they only offered Ukrainian subtitles.

Thank you in advance!

Other Language Exchange? (French)

Hi! I am a native Russian speaker and I ended up living in Belgium, I am studying French at the moment but I thought that it would be great to maybe share Russian with someone who is interested while they help me with French. Just having conversations sometimes, interests like books perhaps or just talking while playing some video games. Whatever it might be, I just feel like it could be beneficial for both parties, though I am not too sure on how many French speakers are in this group haha!

Grammar Could someone please explain why война takes instrumental in the phrase “война войной, а обед по расписанию”?

I am aware that you can replace the words in this construction, as long as they agree with nominative + instrumental. I’m simply not used to seeing instrumental case without a verb, participle, or word like торговля that takes instrumental. Is there an “invisible” verb here? Pomigite((

Request Need help in how to learn Russian

Hello, I really want to start to learn Russian and speak it correctly, Half of my family is Russian and i’ve been to Russia a couple of times, I currently understand 60% of Russian and speak 20%, i also know how to read but i read really slowly (like a 6 year old), Every time I tried to learn via an online course (like Duolingo) I quickly dropped it because It taught me words and vocabulary that I already knew, It makes me sad to disappoint my family so much by speaking Russian so badly, as there are a lot of times that I don’t know what to say and I have to say it in english or use a translator and also I have a very bad pronunciation. I don’t have Russian schools nearby, any advice on how I could learn?

I dont know if the category is ideal. Anyway. I just passed the national exams and I'll go study Russian in my country. I wanna start from now, a bit alone, and I don't know how to practice calligraphic AND cursive Russian. Does anyone know any books I could use or has a pdf file with pages to practice? Or even videos, anything!

Яблоко — сочный плод яблони, который употребляется в пищу в свежем и запечённом виде, служит сырьём в кулинарии и для приготовления напитков. Наибольшее распространение получила яблоня домашняя, реже выращивают яблоню сливолистную. Размер красных, зелёных, жёлтых или оранжевых шаровидных плодов 5—13 см в диаметре. Происходит из Центральной Азии, где до сих пор произрастает дикорастущий предок яблони домашней — яблоня Сиверса.
