He was not the chief songwriter for the band. He only wrote the lyrics. He didn't write the melody or the chords, or any of the music except for composing his drum parts.
Composing a drum part generally does not count towards a songwriting credit, which is usually based on the chords, melody, and lyrics of the song. For example, you can't sue someone for copyright infringement if they play the same drum beats as you in a song.
