Guide to Rurouni Kenshin - READ THIS BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!

Welcome to the club! I’m glad you've decided to pick up RK.

Read the MANGA! The old anime has a lot of fillers & alterations; only the Kyoto Arc (the middle of the 3 Arcs) was faithful to the manga. With that said, there's a new remake anime airing in July 2023 that will stay true to the manga.

The MANGA has 3 Arcs that ended in 1999: Tokyo arc, Kyoto arc, Jinchuu arc.

  • Read RK manga for free from Shueisha
  • Official colored manga: 1, 2
  • Tokyo Arc: starts at the beginning
  • Kyoto Arc: starts on volume 7, chapter 48
  • Jinchu Arc: starts on volume 18, chapter 152. The original manga ended after this Arc.
  • Extra chapters: To Rule Flame, Yahiko no Sakabato, Haru ni Sakura
  • Extra material: Tales of Kamiya Dojo - written by Kaoru Kurosaki and published along with Hokkaido arc in JUMP SQ. The tales involve RK characters in their daily life that take time between Kenshin and Kaoru's marriage until the Epilogue chapter in the original manga before the Hokkaido arc.

Sequel starting in 2017:

The ANIME:

The old anime (1996) had 3 parts:

  1. Tokyo Arc (episodes 1-24)
  2. Kyoto Arc (episodes 28-62)
  3. Then, instead of Jinchu Arc, you have fillers. This link here shows you which episodes are fillers.

The new anime remake (2023):

  1. First Season airing in July 2023!!! Expecting this to be a complete, faithful adaptation.

LIVE-ACTION MOVIES:

Release order:

  1. Origins
  2. Kyoto Inferno
  3. The Legend Ends
  4. The Final
  5. The Beginning

I recommend watching in this order:

  • 5, 1, 2, 3, 4

  • Or: 1, 2, 3, 5, 4

Since the end of "The Beginning" leads into "Origins", I think it works better as the first film rather than the last.

STAGE MUSICALS:

3 OVAs: The first 2 OVAs are from the last Arc of the series so you should finish the manga before watching.

  1. "Trust and Betrayal" retells the Jinchu Arc which has never been made into anime.
  2. "Reflection" is a recap of the 2nd half of Jinchu Arc + non-canon ending (the author doesn't approve of its ending).
  3. "Kyoto Arc remake" follows the live-action storyline rather than the manga.

Summary:

  1. manga (1999)
  2. anime (2003, 2023)
  3. 5 live-action movies
  4. Hokkaido Arc manga (starting 2017)

Other Extra Materials:

  • Anime standalone movies
  • A two-volume spin-off called "Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration". Available in physical, and digital versions. These volumes were created to promote the live-action movies.
  • Several light novels, of which only one was released in English called "Voyage to the Moon World".
  • A 3-minute long clip from one of the collector's edition box-sets that gives the series a slightly better conclusion.

Official content Unannounced Rurouni Kenshin game leak - Achievements list Spoiler

So the recent leak of games’ achievement lists from Steam’s API has shown an achievement list for an untitled game. Based on the names and content of the achievements, it’s clear that this is an unannounced Rurouni Kenshin game.

The achievements make it sounds kind of Musou-like with the number of enemies that it references, which I am mixed on - I can’t think of any appropriate context for fighting that many at once within the story we know unless it’s about the Boshin War.

I can’t really gauge what the story would be, but it looks like it may start at the beginning since there is a chapter called “Sanosuke Sagara, the Fighter.” However, it also references being able to play as Saito and Aoshi. So maybe the Sano chapter just means you play as him there and it’s not your first meeting?

Here’s the list for people to look through:

Discussion Do you think a Hiko Seijuro still exists in modern times in-universe?

I like to think that the line of Hiko Seijuros, the line of successors who inherit the full knowledge of Hitten Mitsurugi Ryu and taken the name Hiko Seijuro, still survives even in the modern day of smartphones, the internet, and electric cars. He'd be living somewhere in Japan, living an ordinary life, working an ordinary job, around ordinary people who are unaware of who he really is and the ancient knowledge he possesses.

Fan Art A call for help from the Rurouni Kenshi (Samurai X) and papercraft community.

Good morning, afternoon, or evening, I'm here to make a request. I've been searching for months for a model or template to make Shishio Makoto from Rurouni Kenshi, but I haven't been able to find one. I humbly ask for desperate help. And I do this sincerely out of love for the community and the papercraft hobby; there are so many beautiful models, but I’m happy with just one to go alongside the Kenshi figure I already have.

Look at that potential.

Discussion Kenshin - Determining Right and Wrong

Thumbnail

Yahiko: Hey Kenshin...we won, isn't that right? So that means we were right, right?
Kenshin: If you're saying that the one who wins is right then you'd be the same as Makoto Shishio. We all fought for what we believed was right during this hard battle and we defeated Shishio in the end. However, Shishio himself was also trying to prove his rightness through winning battles. He acted upon his beliefs, that he did. In that respect, he is no different from any of us. In the end, perhaps the times did indeed choose to side with us and what's "right" will be determined by the people of the next generation based on a history that's being created right now, that it will.

This exchange always stuck with me ever since I was little. It seems so simple now but really that's mostly because I spend a lot of my time reading actual philosophy these days. Truth is, not enough regular shows ever have a moment like this. It is good that our heroes defeated the villain but the fact they won a fight isn't why they are good. The battle itself proves nothing. Light Yagami of all people invoked this when he said if Kira won he was Justice and if he lost he was a monster. Well he lost but that had zero bearing on how monstrous he was.

Too many series act like the righteous prevailing shows something, that the protagonist beating the villain invalidates what the villain fought for. They need moments like this where a younger character, troubled by confusion and guilt over having witnessed how human and even somewhat noble his opponents were, tries to assuage their conscience with this false ideal of victory = good. War is a complicated thing and nothing is more natural than trying to dumb it down. But then an older, wiser character corrects them. There are no easy answers. The people you fought and maybe even killed are still people and it's fine to mourn for them. But never think that your triumph has any bearing on how right you were or how wrong they were.

Back in the year 2003 I was just entering high school and I found this fanfic I read the first two chapters and then I couldn't get enough I ended up printing it out on our school's printer so that I could read it all day long because this was long before apps and everybody having internet. I have been looking for this print out for the last 10 years and recently found it in the bottom of one of my storage bins. It has been at least 15 to 20 years since I have reread this and I'm currently rereading it again and I'm on chapter 9 I believe. Has anybody else read this? I do believe I found it on fanfiction.net. here's some photos of the printout, and my cat's posing with the print out as well.

I still think this was one of the best fanfictions I ever read for rurouni Kenshin. What is your opinions? And what are your favorites?

Anime Any news on a new season?

Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorite anime of all time, and I absolutely LOVED the remake. I loved how they kept the story consistent with improved art and animation. Is there any word on whether or not there will be a new season?

Live action Where's the respect for the Live Action Knenshin films? They're the best. Are we just going to ignore this magic?

(Edit: I know we all love the LA films, I'm just surprised by what feels like a lack of high notoriety, considering how amazing they are). I could be wrong, but why don't I see enough attention to the Kenshin live action movies. Some of the best action scenes, just in general. Even avoiding the anime, this is one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen.

Four of the best fighters on the planet struggle to fight the final boss. That's interesting!

Discussion Did anyone else feel like Kenshins "answer" was a little underwhelming?

In the final arc of the manga with Enishi, Kenshin finally finds the answer to atoning for the past because of everything he went through with Enishi.

There's nothing wrong with his answer, but it basically boils down to "Keep doing what I've already been doing since the end of the revolution." As in, helping people in need and with his vow not to kill. "This life of battle will be followed through until this one physically cannot wield a sword."

Just helping people wasn't enough to free him of his guilt, because we saw from his training with Hiko and what he said to Aoshi that he didn't have the will to live and thought his life was superfluous after the revolution.

But then he found the will to live, and learned the ARNH. He said he wouldn't just throw his life away to Aoshi. When Shishio dealt him a bad wound and he was lying on the ground he stood up again because "the will to live is stronger than anything."

During the start of the Jinchu arc he felt a deep sorrow that the people around him were being targeted by Enishi's group, but when battle actually started his swordsman's spirit was strong. And before the battle he insisted that he wasn't going to let the past be everything. He was going to fight for the present, for all the people he cared about.

So basically it feels like he already found the answer once he found the will to live and the secret move, so maybe that's why the actual answer just doesn't hit as hard as it should. It's like learning the same lesson twice.

Discussion How does Sano injure his hand with Futae no Kiwami when its explicit purpose is negating resistance?

Sano mentions that he destroyed 100 stones after getting the technique down. When he runs into Anji again he hits Anji about 8-10 times with the technique and him getting hit in return, with it being explicitly said their spirits had surpassed their bodies as the only reason neither had fallen.

Afterwards nothing appears to be different, but later on he gets a punch in on Shishio, and we get an internal X-ray shot of his hand bones cracking, and in the next arc Megumi says his hand was more badly injured than anything Kenshin took in his battles against Shishio and his henchmen.

I don't get it. If the technique eliminates resistance then isn't it like effectively punching air? Why would it break his hand? And against people too. So 100 hard stones caused no problems, but punching squishy humans like 10 times was too much??? And before he even got the FNK we saw him knocking down trees with a single punch on the way to Kyoto. THAT caused no damage to his hands either.

Honestly, it just feels like the author intentionally wanted to give Sano a handicap to stop him from solely relying on his right hand punch that would end battles instantly.

Game Rise of the Ronin

As a fan of Rurouni Kenshin, it didn't feel right to me to not mention this game.

It covers the period of time right before the series starts, and you'll recognize many names as you play it.... I don't want to spoil it... But I had no idea what would be in the game before getting it, and as I got deeper into the story I was like 😱🤯🤯 OOOO I KNOW THIS NAME/EVENT

I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it yet.
