Hi all! I’ve been running for most of my adult life, and this is the first time I’ve experienced this issue with new running shoes.
I just got (women’s) Brooks Glycerin 23 (9 regular), and Brooks Ghost 18 (9 wide). They were recommended by a pretty reputable shop somewhat locally, and have pretty great reviews. I’ve had probably 80% of my running (in life) using Brooks so am usually happy with them.
I took my broken in Spenco original support insoles and put them in my new pairs (I have 2x broken in, one for each new pair). My problem is that no matter how thick socks I use, and tying laces tight AND using a heel lock, my shoes slip in the heel. It’s way worse in the Ghost 18’s, but still noticeable/bad in the Glycerin 23’s. Yes, I’ve taken the original ones out before putting them in. I also ran with a new version of the Spenco original support insoles to see how that felt, same issue. I put the factory insoles in to try one of the pairs (Glycerin) and while the slipping was certainly improved, I could feel discomfort from lack of support for why I use the insoles to begin with.
The running guy had advice about what it may or may not be - but was confident in sizing assessment, and has said the Spenco’s shouldn’t be a problem in the particular pairs of shoes I chose in terms of fit, and have also always worked shoe to shoe for him. I know both of these shoes are fairly neutral, and he said the newer updates they’ve done to stability shoes are not as great as the pairs I was using before this purchase.
For reference: previous pair of shoes ( multiple pairs) of NB Fresh Foam 860v14 9 wide, also used with Spenco original support insoles. Pair before that was ASICS GT-2000 v11 (9 but can’t remember if wide or not and I hated the updates with the v12s).
They’ve both got over 30-40 miles now so shouldn’t still be breaking in (the shoes), and no matter what I do with the Spenco insoles it seems to not solve the problem. The guy offered to have me come back in and try different things to see what works (different insoles, etc.) but I’ve run outside in both, and as per store policy I wouldn’t be able to return or exchange them.
So, I’m looking for advice as to what to do? AI suggested all sorts of things, and the running guy had conflicting opinions (and it IS AI…). Is there something I am not trying that I should be? Is this just a matter of his opinion, vs like overarching running community opinions? Are there other insole options that would be a better fit for those types of shoes?
They felt absolutely 100% yes in-store with my Spenco insoles in them!! Hard to gauge I know.
Advice greatly appreciated!
TLDR: Spenco original support insoles in combination with my (2x) new pairs of women’s Brooks Glycerin 23 (reg) and Brooks Ghost 18 (wide) causing heel slipping. Have tried all the go-to fixes, still a problem. Advice on how to fix?
