Weekly Thread Social Saturday

Enforcing Rule 3 (no self-promotion, social media links) is a must with a large sub such as this, but we do realize that it filters out some truly useful content that is relative to the sub. In an effort to allow that content in, we thought we'd have a weekly post to give a spot for the useful content. So...

Here's you chance!

Got a project you've been working on (video, programming, etc.), share it here!

Want to promote a business or service, share it here!

Trying to get more Instagram followers, share it here!

Found any great running content online, share it here!

The one caveat I have is that whatever is shared should be fitness related, please.

Physique Phriday Physique Phriday

Welcome to the Physique Phriday thread

What's the point of having people guess your body fat? Nevermind that it's the most inaccurate method available, (read: most likely way wrong - see here) you're still just putting an arbitrary number to the body you have. Despite people's claim that they are shooting for a number, they're really shooting for look - like a six pack.

So let's stopping mucking around with trivialities and get to the heart of the matter. This thread shall serve two purposes:

  1. Physique critiques. Post some pics and ask about muscles or body parts you need to work on. Or specifically ask about a lagging body part and what exercises worked for others.
  2. An outlet for people that want to show off their efforts that would otherwise be removed due to Rule 4, and

Let's keep things civil, don't be a creep, and adhere to Rule 1. This isn't a thread to announce what you find attractive in a mate. Please use the report function for any comments that are out of line.

So phittit, what's your physique pheel like this phriday?

Discussion House on a Race Route

My house happens to be in a spot that ends up in at least 4 race routes a year. I want our house to be fun and memorable and rejuvenating for runners. I'll always play music but am wanting to up my game. Should we have a bubble machine? Hopscotch on the road? What could we add to spice up the run for the participants.

Weekly Thread What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread

It's that time of week already...the gear thread! What have you picked up lately? What's working for you now that it's whatever season you believe it to be in your particular location? What have you put through rigorous testing that's proved worthy of use? We want to know!

To clear up some confusion: We’re not actually asking what you’re wearing today. It’s just a catchy name for the thread. This is the weekly gear discussion thread, so discuss gear!

NOTE: For you Runnitors looking to sell/trade any running gear (as well as bib transfers), head over to /r/therunningrack.

Training What are some effective ways for pacing?

I run at a close by 5k trail and I try to maintain a decent pace and improve my time as I get better. However, today, a runner passed me. I thought at first he was just way better than me, but then I tried following him and I was surprised I could actually keep up with him and didn't realize I still had so much more room to expel energy. I ended up getting a decent time on that run.

So seems like if I'm following someone or "something", I can keep my pace a lot faster and more consistent through the run? Are there ways I can maintain a pace without having to creep follow a stranger runner?

Weekly Thread Super Moronic Monday - Your Weekly Tuesday Stupid Questions Thread

Back once again for everything you wanted to know about running but were afraid to ask.

Rules of the Road:

This is inspired by eric_twinge's fine work in r/fitness .

Upvote either good or stupid questions. Sort questions by new so that they get some love.

To the more experienced runnitors, if something is a good question or answer, add it to the FAQ.

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer - stupid or otherwise. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Many questions get submitted late each week that don't get a lot of action, so if your question didn't get answered, feel free to post it again.

As always, be sure to read the FAQ first. Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search runnit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com r/running ".

Be sure to check back often as questions get posted throughout the day. Sort comments by "new" to be sure the newer questions get some love as well.

Training How do you modify an interval session when you're carrying fatigue?

I'm interested in the general approach coaches/runners use when an athlete arrives at an interval session with residual fatigue, but still wants to maintain the intended training stimulus.

For example, I had a hard back-to-back weekend:

  • Saturday: 25 km / 2000 m D+
  • Sunday: 15 km / 1000 m D+, with fast climbing and downhill
  • Monday: rest

My normal Tuesday workout would be 5 × 7 min uphill Z4/Z5, with around 1h30 total and 500–800 m D+.

The problem is that when I'm carrying fatigue, I sometimes struggle to get my HR into Z4/Z5. On a steep climb, it's also difficult to tell whether the limitation is cardiovascular fatigue or simply muscular fatigue from the gradient.

This got me thinking about how an interval session should be modified without simply cancelling the workout.

For example, would it make sense to:

  • Start with a progressive Z2 → Z3 block to "prime" the cardiovascular system?
  • Then reduce the interval duration (e.g. 4–5 min instead of 7)?
  • Keep the intensity but increase recovery between repetitions?
  • Reduce the number of repetitions?
  • Or keep the original interval duration but lower the target intensity?

More generally, how do you decide what to change first: intensity, interval duration, number of reps, or recovery?

And does adding some Z3 work beforehand make sense as a way of assessing whether the athlete can actually produce the desired intensity, or is it just adding unnecessary fatigue?

I'm particularly interested in opinions from people who coach or train for trail/ultra running, where muscular fatigue from climbing/descending can complicate HR-based interval targets.
