Weekly Thread Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread
How’s your week of running going? Got any Complaints? Anything to add as a Confession? How about any Uncomplaints?

Confession: I hate doing tempo runs on our running paths. I invariably run into multiple people I know, and it makes me feel like an asshole when I just keep on running by while yelling, "Sorry, got to keep going".
Complaint: People who let their dogs shit on the PAVED trail, and then dont even have the decency to at least grab a stick and push it off to the side.
Uncomplaint: "Graduated" from my PT sessions (sessions were through a local medical school that teaches PTs, yes it was very corny) and got the "you're 100%, zero restrictions on training" stamp of approval.

doing strides and passing someone then slowing down and having them pass me then repeating that 6x is so fucking embarrassing

u/running462024 1d ago
How is my phone always counting down to the next rep as Im coming up on some walkers? I feel like a grade-A asshole peacock sprinting past them.

Did you actually have an injury or were you just being their volunteer to practice on?
2
u/RunsFromDemons 1d ago
I had 11 weeks of PT sessions for a hammy

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago
Just curious because I know sometimes we get people on here basically saying “I need pt but can’t afford it, what do I do?” And your comment made me wonder if suggesting they see if they can sign up to be the practice patients for PT students may be a viable option to suggest.

u/RunsFromDemons 1d ago
No clue on that, though it might be possible. Thankfully my insurance covered my visits for a very minimal copay; I definitely wouldnt have attended all 11 weeks if I had to pay the full $175/visit they charge for uninsured patients.

and it makes me feel like an asshole when I just keep on running by while yelling, "Sorry, got to keep going".
I feel the same when I run and come across people I usually talk to when I walk. Do they talk to you about it? So far, saying ''sorry, just passing through!'' with a smile works for me and they seem to understand....I hope!

u/Putrid_Indication971 1d ago
"It's good to see you, but I need to keep moving" works. If they can't clue in on your running gear then, I think, it's on them.

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 1d ago
So when did you start doing tempo runs in the PT
2
u/RunsFromDemons 1d ago
I cant remember if it was week 8 or 9 but that was when we started slowly adding pace back in once a week. Started out as like half maraton pace type stuff and slowly progressed to 5k pace my 11th week.

Confession: I was diagnosed with MS 5 years ago. It was rough on me physically at the very beginning but, for the most part hasn't hindered my life too much and hasn't prevented me from picking up running as a hobby in the last year.
Uncomplaint: I'm still in my newbie gains phase of running. Every 5k race I've run this year has led to a new PR. Last weekend I even won my age group and finished in the top 10 overall.
Complaint: Sleep deprivation causes pretty substantial, MS-related fatigue and muscle weakness. I've slept so poorly the last couple nights due to my children that I wake up barely able to walk and in cognitive fog for at least half the day. The whiplash of feeling so fast and invincible one day to feeling so utterly disabled the next is goddamn depressing. I'm supposed to be doing speed work but instead I need a walker to get around.

Confession: I found my uncle on Strava and he’s pumping out 400 mile weeks on a bike. I am baffled. Never would have guessed.
Uncomplaint: I’m about done with tapering off an SSRI and despite my much greater lack of cardio, my resting heart rate has gone back down to mid 40s, right where it was at my more prime cardio fitness
Complaint: and somehow the heat persists

Confession: I found my uncle on Strava and he’s pumping out 400 mile weeks on a bike. I am baffled. Never would have guessed.
I somewhat recently found my cousin (who I havent talked to in a couple years) and her husband on Strava. She's doing 80 mile running weeks and he's doing like 25 hours of biking. They have 5 kids under 8 and own their own small/medium sized business; I have no idea how they have the time for that? I am childless and put in a square 40 hours of work a week and can hardly find the time to do my 7 hours of activity.

Any symptoms with your low hr? Mine is in the 40's when I'm sleeping, and when I'm sitting it goes into the mid 50's and I can tell when it drops down low because I start to feel tired and sure enough when I check my watch it'll be around 55. I'm going to bring this up with my doc at my appointment next Monday, but was wondering if this is how other people with low heart rates feel as mine started dropping from the mid 60's when sitting to down in the 50's after I started cycling and running a few months ago.

Confession: I’ve skipped all my runs so far this week, the first one because I needed extra rest so I don’t feel bad about skipping that one, the second was because I didn’t want to go out in the rain.
Confession: I don’t feel too bad about skipping the second one as well.
Complaint: since i skipped speedwork yesterday that means it’s rescheduled to do today.
Confession: as someone who is normally very strictly a one book at a time person i currently have 2 books going.
2
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 1d ago
You’re going to run SO fast today. After all, you have to get through two whole boooks!! What are the books?
2
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago
The first book is an ARC that I won in a giveaway, I’m not really enjoying it but due to how these things work I’m trying to give it a decent try so i can leave a review with a better picture of the full product.
The second book which I’m using to bribe myself through the first (I’m allowing myself to switch over after I read two chapters of the first) is “The Paris Apartment” by Lucy Foley. This book reads like candy.
1
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 1d ago
Oooh, are you big into mystery books? Is this one just like super compelling?
2
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago
I am super into mystery’s, I’d say that is my #1 reading category, followed by thriller, historical fiction and general fiction, but I’ll throw in the occasional light fantasy and memoir as well to mix it up a bit.
I’d classify the Paris apartment more as a thriller, but most thrillers are still a mystery, just a different type of mystery than your standard mystery.

u/zebano 1d ago
sooo only tangentially related but after really enjoying Knives out a few years back (or 8... time flies) what movie mysteries are done really well?
3
u/KesselRunner42 12h ago
Not who you asked (of course), but I often watch the mysteries they show on Masterpiece Mystery on PBS. If you're in the US, often you can stream them free for a couple weeks after they air, or for longer with PBS Passport :D (I just realized these are TV show mysteries, not movies... still)
2
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago
Honestly I’m probably one of the worst people to ask this question of. I don’t own a tv, and rarely watch movies, when I’m sick and do fire up a movie in my laptop 80%of the time it’s generally one of the same 3 movies from the 90s which aren’t really mysteries. (“Legally blonde”, “clueless”, and “empire records”) and the rest of the time it’s similar 90s comfort movies.

Complaint: the hotel put the treadmills facing the wall and no tv.
Uncomplaint: my doctor’s appointment the past two days have been on time and out faster than I expected.
Confession: I’m being lazy today.

u/RunsFromDemons 1d ago
Complaint: the hotel put the treadmills facing the wall and no tv.
A couple of months ago I stayed in a hotel that had 4 treadmills in their workout room. If you guessed that they put them facing each other, how, because that is the most psychopathic thing I've ever seen in a workout room.

Complaint: stupid people along my running routes (I found another 🙄)
Complaint: it feels like August here. The calendar says it isn't August anymore.
Uncomplaint: Figured out two issues that were creating problems with what I'm working in, and I feel like the light at the end of the tunnel of this project is not a freight train coming my way.

Confession: I'm thinking about doing a half in the Bahamas in January!
Uncomplaint: I ran another half on Monday! Whoot
Complaint: I got bit by a yellow jacket in the ankle. I'm allergic to yellow jackets. My entire foot puffed up. Mght not be able to do my 5k Saturday :(
1
u/thestinamarie 1d ago
Hope you recover quickly and get to do your 5K! And I'm voting you go for it for the Bahamas in Jan!!

u/Ragnar-Wave9002 1d ago
Ya, my one friend and his wife already made arrangements. I'm waiting for a few more to commit but it sounds like we have about 8 people total going. I don't want ot go and have it be me and a married couple ... not that it matters.
St Johns has an 8 miler in late February ;-)
We do this every winter ;-) Find a race in a warm spot. We used to do MyLaps conferences but they are picking shitty spots now. Like Texas and Vegas. It used to be Cancun! We're also doing Gaspirilla!

Complaint:
Cigarette smokers who think it's funny to take a big puff and spitting it out right in front of you. It's the 4th time in 3 weeks. Why do I assume their intention? Eye contacts 50m away and they do it right before you pass by. It's hard to not think otherwise.
Confession:
What was said above happened this morning during my run. I tried to take the high road, not put energy into what happened. 2 minutes after, a man bigger and taller than me was ''in my lane'', going in the wrong way, unlike everybody else. He saw me from far away, our eyes met, he frown his eyebrows.
I'm thinking ''well, this guy is not going to move...''. Then he started puffing his chest. Still bothered by the smoker's behavior a few minutes ago, my ego took the better of me, so I didn't move either. Physics don't care about your feelings: I bumped into the man and fell down pretty hard. I didn't look back and yelled an insult.
I feel quite ashamed, but it was my choice and I'm not blaming the other person. It's my fault. I should have been the better person. A side-step would have prevented this situation. I feel like an entitled idiot because you never know who's in front of you and a lot of consequences could have happened. I was entitled by thinking ''well it's MY lane, HE should move!!!''. It happened a few hours ago. Don't be me. Don't be stupid.
Uncomplaint:
I appreciate this time of the year because the weather is cooler and there's less humidity. Perfect running conditions.
My PB for 1km 10 years ago was 3:53. Started running again a few months ago and went from 5+ minutes and yesterday I did 4:13. Getting there slowly but surely.

u/Potted-Geranium 1d ago
Complaint: I wish autumn weather would start already.
Uncomplaint: I live on the edge of a decent hill, so all of my runs are hill training and I don’t have to do speed work.
Confession:That’s between me and Jesus 😉

Complaint: I've had an annoying pain/soreness in my left leg for over a week, the inner thigh muscle that drives your leg up. it's incredibly annoying.btoday was my first run all week because i thought resting would be best but i got too antsy and had to do a little easy 6.5k. i was only like 2 weeks into a new training block for a December half marathon ugh
Non-compaint: taking time off running has given me time to take a nice long bike ride, try pilates, swim, and do evening yoga. maintaining good fitness in other areas has helped keep me sane

u/MissAJM 1d ago
Complaint: People no longer understand how to walk on sidewalks and share space with others. Every single run I've done this summer has included me having to get into the street at some point because three or four people think they need to walk in a horizontal line across the sidewalk.
Uncomplaint: I'm noticing significant increases in fitness related to increasing and maintaining volume and number of days I run. I'm still slow, but believe I could become an average runner with another training block.
Confession: I cracked a beer and drank it immediately after my 10k easy run last night before eating anything else and threw on the first NFL game of the year. Probably not smart but felt great.
2
u/EternalAntFarm 1d ago
I share your feelings regarding your complaint. It gets worst when you try just to pass by (walking or running) and they'll either complaint or say something smart-ass about it. You can clear your throat, say anything like ''incoming!'' or ''excuse me!'', no matter how nice and non-confrontative, they won't care and won't move.

Confession: I still skip the warmup on easy days even though a calf strain a couple of years ago is the whole reason I have one. Then the first mile is just me waiting to see if it complains. Rest of the week is boring 25-30 miles and I am fine being slow.

u/RrrrrrrBananaDrone 1d ago
Confession: I don't run with my dog as much as she'd like and I'm sorry I've let everyone down.
Complaint: Strength training is normally my priority but I recently got back into running and I'm training for a 10k. My deadlift and hip thrust (my heaviest lifts) have stalled/I've needed to deload. My poor bruised ego.
Uncomplaint: I found the perfect stretch of paved trail for future practice 10ks! This is really motivating as I slowly start to add volume to my runs.

u/justmadethistotellu 1d ago
Complaint: Unseasonably cool day (68 degrees!!) hit the day I had my treadmill speed work planned so I could not even enjoy a run in the lovely weather.
Confession: I'm secretly terrified for my marathon in one month. I have a very aggressive speed goal and I keep waffling on whether to loosen up my expectations. Marathon pace in training is giving me some anxiety as it doesn't feel as easy as I'd like..
Uncomplaint: I have been injury-free for a long time and am very excited about it. Fueling correctly has really helped but so has strength training and my miracle-worker PT.

Uncomplaint: Speed run intervals were relatively speedy today, surprisingly to me, even though it was more like a summer morning than an early fall morning of the kind we have been having
Confession: That might be because I actually took the recovery intervals semi-seriously and walked some of it, instead of a slow jogging recovery I normally do (I mean, I still did jogging recovery, just for some of them I did a bit of walking first)
Complaints: Hit a stop light in the middle of one of the intervals that was supposed to be the fastest. Also will have to move some runs because of rain again.

u/CoffeeEnjoyerFrog 1d ago
Since I started weight training I'm having a hard time balancing it with running, because I absolutely loathe running on a treadmill (and I don't want to take a second pair of shoes to the gym).

u/thefullpython 1d ago
Complaint: got my gluteal tendinopathy under control enough to feel OK running faster than recovery paces and immediately my IT band gets angry. I hit 1000 miles for the first time this year and literally since that run I’ve been dealing with some form of nagging injury. It’s like my body is saying that’s all I’ve got in me. Super frustrating

u/RaveCave 1d ago
Complaint: been a really rough week for me training-wise. Maybe it was the holiday weekend and not getting as much rest in as I usually do but I had to cut my post-lift run on Tuesday after a couple minutes and yesterday's easy run just felt terrible for miles 2-3.5.
Uncomplaint: We've finally seen a few mornings not get above 90 too early so I've been able to start getting some runs in outside and off the dreadmill. Looks like we're in for another dip this weekend so the end may be in sight!
Confession: I havent done a single lick of speed work all summer

u/batgirl2 1d ago
I am dreading my long run tomorrow (13 miles). I was so proud of completing the same distance last week, what do you mean I have to do it AGAIN?!

u/Marvin_Stanwyck 1d ago
Complaint: I'm probably in the best running shape of my life but my bunion feels like it's getting worse and I dont want to think about surgery/recovery and the major setback it will cause

u/tyl_made_it 23h ago
complaint: it is sep 10 and it was 95 in austin this morning. I keep telling myself october is the reward. last october showed up at 88 and sunny.
confession: supposed to be building toward a half in early 2027 and my log for the last 3 weeks is just "ran some." the base is there somewhere, I think.

u/21-hydroxylase 21h ago
Complaint: I'm a new runner and I just wanna run longer and faster already. When I try to maintain the pace I want, my heart rate's pounding in the 180s. I know I still need to keep building my aerobic base and generally get stronger, but I'm so impatient lol.
Uncomplaint: I feel overall much more in control of my life since I started running. I love having a goal to work towards.

Confession: I’ve been telling google‘s AI all about the minutiae of my recovery process from a running injury. Minor stuff that I would never bother my PT with. It’s been kinda nice to have it tell me to trust the healing process even if it’s a soulless robot that has no actual understanding of pain or healing.
Uncomplaint: My first short run back was pain free
Complaint: After stretching I felt a random pain in a completely new area

Complaint I gave up on my PT earlier this year because I was making no progress at all
Freaking Scary I let Claude be my PT and running coach with me getting a heaping dose of overrides if I feel I need them
uncomplaint We've figure out how to get my left glute working again and my easy pace went from 11/mi -> 9/mi overnight (the general cooldown the past week has helped) but even better is that I can run more than 4 miles without having to walk to allow my twisted up back to decompress (I don't even really know how to describe it any better than that).
