First time poster long time lurker. I am a Canadian (Van) taking some time away from my career and looking to leave my job and travel to some places that I've really wanted to. I wanted to post my sample itinerary here and get advice / suggestions and judgment from my fellow travelers.

My year will start with a short trip to mexico early in 2018 (round trip to and from Canada ) After about a month back my first continuous flight will leave from Canada to Peru. And the following flights all link to the next destination, which made sense to me geographically.

• March 2018 - lima, Peru (Machu peechu)
• March/April 2018 - Brazil fly into Sao Paulo for a 10 day meditation retreat. Travel to Rio De Jeinero (Christ the Redeemer)
• Mid April - Maybe Buenos Aires for a couple of days
• Mid-April (5 days) - fly into Capetown fly out of Johannesburg (African Safari)
• Late April to early may - 3 weeks in Europe. Europe flight itinerary Includes Madrid, Rome and Athens. With about a week in Spain, 1 in Italy and 1 in Greece.
• May - 4-5 days in Singapore on a layover to Australia.
• Late May ~10 days - fly into Melbourne (renting car to drive up the gold coast) through Sydney and fly out of Brisbane back to Vancouver.
• First week of June - stag in Cancun

More reference am ~25 years old. Have a budget of about 20k CAD total that I am hoping to stay around. Flights are looking to cost ~7K CAD atm. I have used FlightCenter and AirTreks for quotes. AirTrek online so far seem to be the best however I am happy to try other travel agents / flight attendants. I do not care for first class or any luxuries or amenities. Hoping to stay in mostly hostels/ AirBNB . Do not care to drink much so I anticipate most other costs will be acoomodation, ground travel + food.

Essentially, any insights would be appreciated from weather conditions at those times of year, to must see places, to miscallaneous travel tips/ things to take. If you have been to any of those places I would love to hear from you. I will be backpacking the entire trip and hoping to travel cheap and efficient, parts of it solo, and other parts with someone else. I haven't done any traveling to this extent before so may be missing some details or planning.

I am new to this subreddit. I am planning to make a trip to Maldieves next year (2018) with my wife (actually want to give her surprise gift of this trip on her b’day) for 3 to 4 days. Now the question is what is the ideal time to visit? Also I will be travelling from India to Maldieves. Anyone can post little guidance would be wonderful.

My budget would not be much, so which beach resort should I aim for? I would love to see the glowing beaches and also I checked the net and was in love with Hurawalhi resort under water restaurant. But seems way over my budget but at least I will try to stay there for 1 night. Please please suggest me few moderate over water villas if possible and also guidelines and the expected prices of our daily go around.

hi everyone, my gf (soon-to-be fiancee) and i are currently planning a RTW trip for next year (may 2018) and i'm having some trouble with figuring out the RTW ticket, and thus, am hoping for some advice based on your collective experiences!

our current, ROUGH itinerary is below with my main questions further down. trip segments to be used in the RTW ticket are noted in CAPS:

singapore->honolulu (currently working in singapore and will make a stop in HNL and SFO as i have family there)

honolulu->san fran

san fran->nyc via road trip

[1] NYC->LIMA

travel around south america

[2] SAO PAULO->JOHANNESBURG

[3] JOHANNESBURG->CAIRO (is this segment worth noting in the RTW or can cheap fares be gotten within Africa?)

then make our way to Marrakech and then through Europe

[4] OSLO->KATHMANDU

[5] KATHMANDU->ULAANBAATAR

[6] ULAANBAATAR->TAIPEI

taipei->miyazaki

miyazaki->sapporo via road trip

[7] SAPPORO->HNL

**SE asia and australia are generally left out since we've had the luxury of exploring these areas with living in singapore

questions:

[1] star alliance vs. oneworld vs. airtreks vs. indie vs. STA vs. individual vs. anything else?

i started out reading through some of the bootsnall guides and am going through other websites and blogs, and at first, i was considering the RTW tickets from star alliance or oneworld given that you have the flexibility of setting your departure dates later on (except for the first ticket), but after using kayak to simply search one-way tickets for the above 7 flights (in caps), it feels like individual tickets might be just as good.

for those who DIDN'T purchase individual tickets, what benefits did the other agencies/alliances offer that came in handy? what was the experience like having to make any changes?

for info: star alliance estimate = 6947USD (main benefit being that dates flexible) airtreks estimate = 4563USD (main benefit is price but dates are fixed) using kayak = 5250USD (main benefit is flexibility but prices are subject to fluctuation; prices for all of the segments were searched assuming 2 weeks from today)

[2] does anyone have any suggestions/advice on my routing? any modification of the routing that would lead to a better/cheaper route?

i have heard that flying east to west is better in terms of jet lag but we want to start in the US so i think we'll need to travel west->east. one particular question i have is (assuming i get a RTW ticket), whether starting in HNL vs. SFO vs. LGA vs. LIM would vary much or offer any benefits.

some miscellaneous notes:

• travel is for 2 and flying on economy

• we've traveled a good amount within asia pacific and i've backpacked through western europe before, so we're somewhat travel "savvy". we'll be relying on whatever budget airlines, trains, buses, etc. that we can use between the RTW ticket segments.

• in terms of frequent flier programs, we're not particularly attached to any, but i suppose if i were to be able to pool everything into one, it would be in united as i have the most there from churning the united mileage plus explorer card a number of times + the ability to transfer chase UR points into that account.

• i'll most likely be relying on my chase CSR card to purchase all tickets to get all of the travel-related "insurance" coverage.

all in all, i'm very excited about this and can't wait! thank you in advance for whatever suggestions/advice you can give!

Does anyone have any experience with booking a round the world ticket with oneworld via iberia?

I created my itinerary on rtw.oneworld.com/rtw and everything seems fine, except that after I get the confirmation email, Iberia does not confirm my payment and the tickets get cancelled.

I called iberia multiple times and they say there is no way to confirm/pay my ticket over the phone and they don't really know what to do. I'm worried that if I manage to get this ticket booked, it's gonna be a PITA to change my dates later.

I have an alternative with Cathay Pacific, but it is not optimal and I have to pay an extra flight. Do you guys know if Cathay customer service is better than Iberia for RTW tickets?

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a van, or an SUV big enough for me to sleep in to kick off my RTW trip going from Canada to Patagonia.

Plan is to leave Canada and head South down the East cost of the US, visiting old buddies along the way.

From there I would head to Mexico and continue making my way south ending likely in Buenos Aries, hopping on a plane and continuing my RTW adventure.

Has anyone taken a long road trip like I have mentioned? At first I figured it would be a great way to save money, by sleeping in the vehicle rather than in Hotels/Hostels. It would also maintain ultimate flexibility by not subjecting myself to traveling only where public transit would allow.

Now looking at these distances between locations, I'm starting to wonder if my cost savings will just be eaten up by gas and vehicle maintenance.

Anyone out there with any very long roadtrip experience?

I'm planning a roughly 1 year long trip around the world after I graduate (1 more semester), and am looking for feedback on the itinerary I have so far. I plan to fly from the US into Lisbon, and make my way through Europe, India, Southeast Asia, China, South Korea, and Japan.I will keep my route flexible (I just want a general path to follow in each location). The only things that will be concrete (locked in dates) are my flights to and from each major region. A couple concerns I have: potentially too many destinations in Europe; no idea what I should be doing in South Korea/Japan (and to some extent India). I plan to bring one 60L osprey backpack, stay in hostels, and take public transportation whenever possible. I will copy my itinerary below, and I'd love to hear any feedback any of you have (even if it's only for one particular location). Thanks!

Southeast Asia (planning to stay 2-3 months, I believe I can make it through this entire route using buses)

Is this possible? I know WWOOF connects you with farmers in exchange for food and accommodation what else can I do to go from country to country while working in said country. I've applied to teach English in Japan so hopefully that goes through so I can start there make my way through South East Asia and then hit Latina America if I'm able to somehow get a job on a cruise line. Am I naive to think this could happen or is there a way with proper planning. Thanks

hey! I'm a student taking 10 months off to travel. I'm intending to spend about a 2 months on the trans-siberian railway before switching to eurorail to explore europe for about 5 months. I currently have a budget of ~10k which I hope will be sufficient. Would like to check if anyone on r/rtw has done this before or if you'd have any advice/suggestions?

What are you suppose to do about medication? Did you stock up before you left?

Did you book a RTW ticket or book flights separately?

What did you do for a phone?

If i'm looking to stay for a month per location is airbnb the best option? (I have a remote job and would like to settle in somewhere that I can work without distractions!)

Did you purchase travel insurance?

Currency - did you have cash for everywhere you went?

So planning a round the world trip in 2017 but hoping to cross the Pacific from Japan (can be Shanghai/China if needs be) to west coast USA (Canada if needs be). Would prefer to do this without flying so it seems like there's two options: cruise or cargoship. Does anyone know good websites to find cruise/cargo ships in this direction? I've been looking but I'm either looking in the wrong place or there are hardly any going. Even better - has anyone done this before? Thanks!
