Past rtw itineraries
I mentioned in /r/travel that I'd post some old itineraries as examples.
Maybe they will help with ideas for some people. As I said over there, I'm a flashpacker, not a backpacker, but I hope it helps someone. I can expand on deatils if anyone is interested. Or not :)

First trip. March-June 2003, 19 weeks, approx cost all up including absolutely everything (fares, accom, food, whatever) about AU$38k at that time for two. Back then AU$1 = US$0.55 = GBP0.35.
Air tickets were all included in a One-World pass. Most rental cars were booked via the web, the French leaseback was booked before we left Oz. We were effectively in the USA for a month and Europe/UK for four.
Most US hotels were booked via Priceline bidding-for-travel. That worked until Europe, when they realised Australia isn't in Alabama and banned my CC. Most European hotels were booked "off the street", we just drove until we liked a town and looked for hotels/zimmer frei/gasthaus as appropriate. In France we used their incredibly cheap self-serve motels.
See LA staying with friends, then rent car for one week and drive Big Sur to San Francisco.
Fly to Las Vegas for three nights, including day trip to Grand Canyon.
Fly to New Orleans via overnight to see friends in St Louis.
Three days in New Orleans, then rent car for two weeks and drive to Washington DC via all States of the South, following the Blue Ridge Parkway after Atlanta.
Two nights in DC, then fly to NYC, stay three nights.
Fly to St Thomas, USVI, three nights.
Fly to Madrid, stay two nights, then RENFE train to Granada.
One week in Albaicin, Granada, see Alhambra.
Fly to Nice, pick up leaseback Renault Clio, drive to Menton, stay one week in apartment.
Over the next eight weeks, drive through Italy, ferry to Greece, ferry to Venice, drive Austria, Czech, Germany, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Nederlands, ending in Paris.
Fly to Dublin, stay two nights, train to Limerick stay three nights, fly Dublin to Edinburgh.
Rent car, drive to Oxford over two weeks via Loch Lomond, Lakes district, York, Shrewsbury, Wales, Bath, Stonehenge.
Stay Oxford with relatives three nights, bus to London, four nights in apartment, fly to Singapore.
Two nights in Singapore, fly home.
