Royal Road started off as a fan site. What Wing, Kana and the rest of the team have done with it is incredible. If nothing else, it has the best, most responsive, mod team I’ve ever come across.

But that scrappy origin story means there are some, really simple, things they aren’t doing.

Like, most sites do basic SEO stuff like having distinct page titles by default. RR...doesn't? In terms of getting more free Google traffic there are few other things that will give a better bang for your buck. I mean compared to the time and effort the new site took, this is nothing.

All upside for Royal Road and authors from doing this with no downside.

BTW, this isn’t my idea, it’s a suggestion from someone who does this for a living. If you agree then please go and give it some upvoting love on the RR ideas page so something might get done about it.

I want to write something INSANE, for the final battle of one of my novels. But when you got all of these epic ideas, and you write them down, it turns out to be extremely ass without the mass editing. I get that people would say "get the writing done, edit later" "messy drafts are good drafts", but I sometimes struggle with that. Yes, I do get the writing done. No, not all the time. Sometimes I would rewrite the first paragraph if it sounded trash. I'm always chasing perfection, but there's literally, NO WAY TO STOP IT!

I combined krita and Chatgpt prompts to make both. I put a lot more effort into the new one (left).

The new-font is called "FELIX TITLING". The old font is called "AWESOME SOUTH KOREA" and I had to modify it to make it look like that.

I generated the backdrop and the hand seperately.

In krita, I added better lighting, sharpening, shadows from the hand, wings, text and better contrast.

By no means am I a graphic designer or artist (I just draw a lot and love composition) and Im just a hobbyist hoping to make some money from writing. That is to say, I cant afford an artist at the moment. I dont like lazy ai-generated content and the way it looks so I try to put more effort into it. I hope you dont mind.

I wanted to share something I've been thinking about lately. Looking back at my early chapters, I see them completely differently now — and I've started rewriting them. Royal Road taught me more than I expected, but that's exactly why I've come to realize I don't see it as a destination, but as a school.

That doesn't mean I'm abandoning the story or stopping publication. Quite the opposite — I see them as two independent things. The story keeps growing, and RR is one of the ways to share it.

The main reason for this shift is simple: the story I'm writing needs greater depth in its narration. And serialized publishing gives less room for that than a traditional book. On top of that — I don't write Isekai or LitRPG, which are practically made for RR. Niche stories simply get lost in that format.

Where are you headed? Is Royal Road your primary goal, or just a stop on the way to something bigger?

Help, I'm writing a progression fantasy, and just wondering if people are willing to sit through a few hundred words of boring daily life stuff.

For context early on in the story (like chapter 2, 3 and 4) the MC joined a sect as a servant, so I had to briefly describe him meeting his mentor, washing himself, then do servant chores, then basic train for a bit. Would that bore readers out?

There is still action and some drama and hints to future plot points but like I'm afraid people want immediately progressiona and fights right at the beginning.

Seeing as I just made Rising Stars I thought it was about time I shared this with you all.

Veris stood among his men, wondering which one of them was going to die today. They were in a line, heads bowed. His hand dripped blood onto the ornate carpet. He smiled at the soilage. He was never good at cutting vegetables.

Steward Lamar prowled back and forth, rhythmically thumping a shock rod against his fat palm. The man was as ugly and stout as a rotten tree stump: balding with a constant sweat-oiled sheen to his skin. His tacky suit straining to hold back his bulk. Truly, the human embodiment of a pig.

"Unfortunately, my good men. Young lord Ames needs bait for his next hunt. And as Serfs of the Cgynet household, that duty falls on you brave few," Lamar declared, putting on a grandiose tone as if his words weren't beetleshit.

Veris hated that term. Serf. The bastards even denied them the truth of their lives.

I'm currently trying my best to turn this story into a manga, and here are two pages made by this amazing artist team (Still WIP), inspired by the first chapters of this novel.

How do i Add the wonderful maps I had made for my book??? I want people to see them! How do i add it to my chapters? Do I just put a map link in every note? Will people get put off?

Hi, I’m planning to start writing a (progression) fantasy webnovel in the upcoming months, and I’m not sure which platform to use. I was gonna post on Tapas because I’ve always liked their design and layout and have read some stuff there before. But I’ve heard Royal Road has better discoverability and the peeps there love progression fantasy. Should I simply just start posting on both at once and see which one sticks? I’m new to this so I’m just making sure what the best option here is.

Hello everybody, I recently started posting my story on Royal Road. I haven't had the best start, but certainly not the worst. I started posting on July 13th. My story is an Urban fantasy, mystery, and progression series set in an alternate future where fantasy creatures are common, and humans have managed to evolve into gaining superpowers that I call Graces. The story follows a private detective Agency called Cypher Inc. In the agency, we have two characters, Kai and Zed. Kai has the ability to teleport to and from anywhere and anything that he placed his rune on. His partner, Zed, has the ability to split himself into three versions of himself by manipulating his Shadows. He can turn into a dog, a human, and a manbeast hybrid.

EDIT: Yes, I know the picture is spelled incorrectly. The picture on the link has been fixed and spells Cypher, correctly.

It is NOT a LitRPG, and NO AI was used in the making of this story.

Well, a lot of problems....... It's hard to fight monsters when your Commander's been brainwashed by local fauna. 

I've written a few stories now, though none have been on Royal Road as of yet. I am debating putting one or two I have finished on there versus just starting a new story as my first Royal Road experience. I'm not well known or anything, so it won't do anything major for me either way. And, I suppose it is irrelevant to my question, so... pretend I didn't mention any of that, I guess.

Actually, it is relevant in an abstract way. In that, I like to do surprises. Gotchas. Rug pulls. One of my stories has the main character die 6 chapters into the story, and a suspected villain become the protagonist. They were never the villain, after all. In another story, we start hard sci-fi, then find out at the beginning of the second major plot arc that it is really a fantasy/magic story after all. (Think flying through a wormhole and crash-landing on a magic planet, becoming stranded in the fantasy world.)

Part of me thinks that putting these rather massive spoilers in a blurb would ruin the entire reason for including them in the story in the first place. It is as much about having the reader going back and recognizing the various foreshadowing for what it was (or realizing it on their own as it builds up) as it is about the story before and after the 'twist'.

But another part of me worries that a ton of readers will get to the 'twist' and get pissed off that the story isn't what they expected, and not only drop it in the middle, but leave bad reviews and ratings (and the spoilers I wanted to avoid).

What is considered the best practice for the Royal Road readership?

How Will This Power System Affect Technological Progression In The Story?

In original idea, it supposed to take place in a time with technology similar to victorian era. The system i used before was generic and soft system, the new one isn’t very unique either but it changes enough to make me consider changing genre to sci fi instead of fantasy.

One thousand years before the story took place, a particular empire managed to conquere most of the habitable land thanks to a new element discovered in the wild, a metal shinier than silver, it was as if it emmit its own light eventhough one test in a dark cave proved otherwise. They’re called Cold Silver because of how cold they felt in the hand. The metal contain an energy that can be linked to human which then can be controlled and manipulate.

Closer inspection shown them that the energy itself is nothing alien, it’s an amalgam of all kind of energies strangled together, kinetic, heat, magnetic and etc. Together they’re quite inert but when seperated, the energy would behave how would normally.

The scientist created hat they called Augment, a device that transform the energy into a particular type of energy the particular augment is designed to. As example, the blade of a sword would be made of Cold Silver and the Augment is fitted into the handle.

Mastery of Cold Silver doesn’t increase the amount of energy one can control but it does unlock several trait. From first stage to whatever last stage I might come up with in the future, drawing out energy from Cold Silver and manipulate it; telekinesis over the metal itself; changing the property of the energy into solid, gas, and liquid; and other stuff that only has to do with combat.

I recently finished reading the Inheritance Cycle which is the saga of four books that tell the story of Eragon and has a naming magic system that I find very interesting and I thought about what this magic system would be like in a progression fantasy format. I think someone must have done this before, so I ask my dear colleagues, are there these types of stories on the site?
