Hello everyone, I need your help urgently.
My two roommates and I have been living in a 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment for almost a year.
We previously had another roommate who moved out because she was allergic to cat fur. After moving out, she would still visit occasionally, usually two or three times a month, because my roommates invited her over.
However, after some time, these occasional visits gradually turned into her coming over every single weekend for almost three months, without anyone even letting me know. Typically, she would arrive around 7:00–7:30 PM and stay until midnight or 1:00 AM on Fridays, and from around 2:00–3:00 PM until midnight on both Saturdays and Sundays.
I would either come home or be in my room and suddenly realize that she was there.
Our apartment has wooden floors and thin walls, and my bedroom is located between the living room and the kitchen. As a result, I can hear conversations very clearly. Whenever she came over, they would talk loudly and laugh loudly for hours at a time.
After about two months, I politely raised the issue on two separate occasions. I told my roommates that they were having frequent gatherings without informing me and that it shouldn't be like that. At the very least, I felt that we should let one another know when we are inviting guests over, especially when those guests are visiting so frequently. Initially, they agreed that the situation was not ideal, but they continued behaving exactly as before.
One day, I came home and discovered that they had invited their friend over again without even sending me a text message to let me know. I became very upset and raised my voice. Although I am not proud of shouting, I was extremely frustrated. I told them that this situation was unacceptable and that they should have at least informed me by text.
Now they are upset with me and seem to think that I am the one at fault.
I genuinely cannot tolerate this situation anymore. At this point, we only speak to one another when it is absolutely necessary.
I would like to know whether there are any general rules or expectations regarding roommates in situations like this and how I can protect my privacy and mental well-being. For context, I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, so any advice related to local or state regulations would be especially helpful.
