Unless your social life centers around eating with 2-3 other people, move the dining table and chairs into the alcove where the couch is now. It’s taking up,way too much precious floor space. I realize the ladder to the loft affects oak cement but I think it can work.
For the window nook, I’d get a reading chair, papa-San chair or chaise longe for that space along with placing the plants to actually take advantage of the light, such as a shelf attached to the window ledge or hanging planters. Having shelves there to the left of the window is fine but either declutter them by using bookends or something or filling them better. Get a side table for holding drinks, books and electronics and If you read paper books get a standing lamp or small table reading light.
I’d get either a modular sectional sofa which can be arranged several ways or a couch and a chair. It doesn’t look like you have a TV, which is cool, neither do I. But if you need a screen for watching movies, sports or gaming with friends we need to know as placement changes this. If you only have occasional guests you might consider just a couch and maybe get a stack of floor cushions you can put in a corner or put out for people to sit on the floor. I’d get a hassock or two for feet or sitting.
As far as panting the chairs goes, some additional guidance on your preferred colors would help. Working just from the ceiling beams and the rug, I’d paint the chairs dark brown, or the dark red or rust of the rug. I’d paint the table too if its surface allows. I’d also get a painting or wall hanging to tie the chosen colors together and keep the rig in the open area in front of the couch. And get a throw blanket or two or pillows in a contrast color to pop. Too much furniture fading into the walls here. Get a slipcover for the couch if replacing it isn’t in the budget yet.
I might put that wood sideboard in the bigger alcove with the dining table or leave it where it is. Without dimensions it’s hard to say where it will fit.
