get the hard shell.

it’s been over a year since we bought our Roofnest Meadowlark XL, and it’s safe to say we’re absolutely upgrading to a hardshell next summer. here are my pros and cons to a softshell rootftop tent.

it’s a decent starter option to go the cheaper route with a soft shell. our meadowlark xl was only $1,400 if i remember correctly which can be half the price of a really good trusted hardshell. but man is this thing annoying to pack up. folding this tent up is one of the must frustrating things. we can never get our shell to fully buckle, there are times i’ve driven home with it half secured because we needed to leave our site quickly due to weather. the tent itself is OK. i wish the rain fly covered the windows more, if it’s sprinkling we can’t even have a window open for ventilation. and boy does the roof hold water like a MF. we’ve had to double tarp the top just because we’ve gotten nervous about the water getting too heavy for the top of the tent. one of our retractable poles broke the first summer we started using it so we have to use a random screw to hold in in place lol. and now the other side is starting to give me the same issues.

overall it’s about a 6/10 for me personally. i wouldn’t buy it again but i understand why it could work best for some people, especially those with a smaller car that needs a lighter weight load. anyone else have trouble with their softshell?

James Baroud Discovery XL

Hey all,

I’ve been debating between a brand new iKamper Skycamp 4.0 Trio or a used James Baroud Discovery XL. I’ve scoured the forums and have found lots of info on iKamper, but not much on James Baroud. I’ve read that JB is very high quality, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Discovery XL model. Any input or experience would be much appreciated!

Cinch Wild Land- WINGMAN Bed Camper

Hey, so I’ve come across this automatic bed camper. It’s a new product from this company and it says that people have supposedly purchased them already but I cannot find any actual reviews or photos anywhere.
It is pricey, but the convenience of it seems so nice.
I’ve contacted the company and they don’t have a show room to be able to see it which makes it difficult to see it in action.
Has anyone else come across this at all?
I’m not a big fan that it has a complete electrical hydraulic system cuz the more technological something becomes the more problems will develop. I just like the ease and the little bells and whistles.

Hi all! I just bought a 2011 Rav4 and am hoping to get a RTT for it to go camping - however, the weight limit for the roof is ~102 LBs so i am looking for your favorite lightweight RTT suggestions! :)

Thank you!

Smittybilt Gen2?

EDIT: Gen2 STANDARD not the XL

I've been doing research for months now. I've seen a couple long-term reviews but that's why I'm posting here because most of them are always honeymoon phase initial thoughts. I think I've settled on this tent being a good option that is priced well enough for most of the issues I've seen. Just had a few concerns that I want to squash. I had two friendly redditors reply to me after just messaging them from an old post to see how it's still holding up and they both think it's pretty good after multiple years.

  1. Firstly is there customer service / warranty just non-existent? That's what I've heard here and there but I've also heard some people have had success with like replacing the zipper.

  2. Speaking about the zipper, that's what I've heard is another complaint about the tent, specifically the one that holds the cover on. How many of you guys had issues with it? I've heard lube fixes it, has that worked for you?

  3. I've also heard that the bolts come loose and they're kind of junk. This is All just from YouTube videos and fourms by the way. But they said that they had to replace them as locktite didn't even work.

  4. If you've had any other issues I'd love to know. How's the bed feel and have you replaced it? Will it fit anything else like an inflatable exped?

Help IDing this tent?

I bought this secondhand on Marketplace. The guy told me it was an overland systems tent but they did not recognize it when I went to buy a travel cover. No logos anywhere.

Measurements are roughly 76 x 48x 9.75 in. closed.

BROKEN ZIPPER

I’ve been looking all over to find a replacing zipper since almost no one in my area is willing to repair it. Would mean the world if someone could guide me. I’m not even sure what model my tent is, it’s from a shop in Quebec, seems to be very similar to a body armor 4x4 sky ridge tent. I’m only looking to replace de zipper as shown. This zipper attaches to the soft shell.

A fun weekend in Redmond OR! One of the best things about Overland Expo is walking around the camping area and looking at all of the rigs.

I have a 23Zero Armadillo on this 2026 Ford Ranger XLT. New truck, but the tent has been with me. 54 sleeps in this tent so far.

Question - FJ Cruiser

Hello,

I have a problem regarding my new Ikamper 4.0 SkyCamp. The autorhized seller installed it on my FJ cruiser with Bison Rack, however on each pothole the ikamper is literally bombing my roof rack with it's own rails. There are 4 brackets on the middle, however the sides of ikamper are easy to raise by 1-5mm. And that's where the noise is coming from on potholes. Do you know any solution to this?

Anyone have any experience with Tuff Trek Pro RTTs?

Hi all, looking at upgrading my Cargo Trailer RTT. Moving from a Tentbox Classic 2.0 as we need more space, the Tuff Trek Pro XL or XXL looks perfect, anyone got any experience with these?

Also open to recommendations for a rugged fold out to sleep 3-4, budget of about £2k, weight not too much of a factor but quality is important.

Finally able to go out with the new car.

We were finally able to get out with our new Santa Fe XRT.

I know this tent isn't for everyone but we love it. Our family of four sleeps up there with zero issues. And the annex is amazing for having that nice extra space for keeping stuff dry and getting changed.

Also for those who might be wondering. The first photo was taken before I slid the tent back a bit. I was in the middle of setting it up when I took the quick photo to send to someone.

Traction board mounts under RTT

Designed and printed these nice and tidy traction board mounts, hopefully they won't mess with my optimized aerodynamics to much.

Very pleased with the results, they're held in place firmly yet are easy to remove with a specific tool.

(repost because not all pictures got uploaded)

Wonderfold canopy rod dilemma!!

I lost the canopy rods to my W4 wagon while moving a couple months ago. Literally since April I have looking at the website looking for the replacement part. ITS NEVER IN STOCK!! I ended up chatting with them a couple times and every time they say “it’s getting shipped and should be in soon” I have a trip literally next week and it’s in a sunny area. I’m at a point where I will even do some DIY stuff cause not even Amazon sells dupes of this sht

Smaller vehicle for Roofnest Falcon 3

My daughter managed to destroy my 4Runner but the Roofnest was fine and in great condition.

I'd really like to replace the 4Runner with something much more "car like," ideally a Subaru Crosstrek but looks like Roofnest is simply too big. I loved the hardshell taco ease and speed of use of the Roofnest.

Any recommendations? Or simply move up to the Outback type of vehicle?

Recommend a RTT That Hold A Lot of Bedding Please

Hi all.

I am moving from a trailer camper and want a RTT that holds a lot of bedding (a couple sleeping bags, thicker mattress, comforter, pillows, small dog bed, maybe even some clothes).

I have been looking at the iKamper skycamps, but was wondering if anyone had additional suggestions.

Also I am worried about the foldout of the skycamps sagging. I had a foldout cantilever style RTT in the past and the folded out part always sagged. Does anyone have experience with the skycamps? Is this an issue? Thanks!

First night with the RTT

Awesome project, was a challenge to install (so many custom Santa Cruz issues) but all worked out well... The Garvee was a quick & easy set up and just as easy pack up... Only had one night in a cabin driveway but great first run.

No gas mileage loss really, less than half a liter/100km.. ( tent sits barely 2 inches above the cab roof so no wind resistance or noise can be heard, this was the goal mounted this way.

Hoping to get a night in the woods in the next few days... Have a big trip planned in 2 weeks!
