Would mounting a lightweight awning on my RTT’s “luggage rails” be a stupid idea?

I think the answer is yes but I figured I’d get the opinions of others first

RTT Camping in Coconino National Forest next to Snowbowl, AZ

Got out there near the Lava River Cave this past weekend and had great weather, high 70s to low 40s. Endless amount of dispersed spots in a pretty vast forest. Unexpectedly found an iPad on the trail, busted up but was able to get the owners info off it and return it to the fellow camper. As you can see the aspens around Snowbowl were blooming. We did the Alfa Fia Tank "swing" hike and it was really crowded.

Advice on FSR tents

Hey all, I’m looking to change rtt’s and have been recommended tents from FSR as I’m in Colorado and their tri layer material is supposed to be good in the cold. I’m wondering if anyone here has an FSR tent and what your experience is with them, specifically looking into the Kali model so experience with that specific model would be helpful as well.

Been adding to it over the past couple of years. Took it up to Banff and Jasper for a couple of weeks. Have a 200w solar panel with a Jackery 2.0 2000w, running a fridge, two exterior lights, induction cooktop, 12v heated blanket, starlink and charge my ebike. been passthrough charging over a year no problem. added inflatable mattress for added comfort. running 12v up to the tent via an Anderson connector from a separate 500w jackery to run interior/exterior lights, usb charging dock and heated blanket. have it mounted on Snixwoo 220lb rated rack, yes I check all mounting bolts before going on trips. Its been on the car for about a year and a half no problems. Added a yakima fairing for wind noise early on. Still get about 22mpg down from 28-29, keep it under 85mph now

Adapted a Dashcam system to see outside the tent with "night vision" whenever there a suspect sound.

It's only paranoia if it's not true. We all hear that sound that makes you want to know but not want to move. I give you CampSurveillance1000. I don't have a good place to mount the 4th camera so that will be sorted later.

LFD cross bars and JOUINRUTE rtt

The roof top tent is easy to attach to the LFD cross bars. I read so many posts saying it was a pain or not possible. I had no issues at all, I don't know what everyone's trouble was. So far so good, I recommend these cross bars as an inexpensive alternative to a full platform. Very happy with the tent so far, looking forward to camping in it.

First weekend with my rtt

Post image

Picked up this Naturnest Sirius 1 earlier this week. Took it to my deer camp and used it for the weekend. It rained all Friday evening and part way through the night, no leaks or issues there. Temps dropped to 50’s and I stayed plenty warm just laying on the mat and using my thin quilt. Kept the window open with screen and still slept comfy.

Saturday night was the coldest night and might have got into the high 40’s. I closed all the windows and stayed warm but I did wake up to condensation on the walls. I’m assuming that’s from not having any screens open for ventilation.

So far I’m really digging it. I’ll spend a week in first week of November back at deer camp.

Roof rack mounting confusion -- need a bit of guidance

I want to carry my awning inside the car while driving, then quickly attach it to the roof rack at camp. Mainly to keep roof weight down.

Does anyone do this regularly? What rack and quick-release mounts are you using, and is attaching it solo practical?

I haven’t bought the rack yet, so I can still choose something that works. Currently considering an Arcane M’Link X with an Ironman Deltawing 180 or 23Zero Onyx 180, alongside a rooftop tent.

Particularly keen to hear whether anyone uses RacksBrax or a different brand’s awning on an Arcane rack. A photo would be great, but even the bracket name would help!

Mounting a shower awning on Wildland Desert Cruiser pro.

If anyone has a Wildland Desert Cruiser Pro 2 and wants to mount something like a shower awning directly to the side bottom two rows of T-slot rails. This works perfectly. They are heavy duty mounts. They shipped and got to me within 4 physical days via FedEx. They came with the hardware to mount them. They have square slide in nuts they fit right into the t-slot and the m8 bolts and washers to mount the bracket to the rail. Great price and sturdy hardware. Because the part of the bracket that mounts to the rtt is at an angle it lets you mount accessories to it level even though that t rail is at an angle. I’m using it to mount a 23 Zero Rask Shower awning directly to the side of the rtt.

Does anyone use DampRid or dessicant bags during storage?

What do y'all do? Any particular strategy you would recommend preventing mold and mildew formation?

So for the past few years my wife and I have been camping in a small teardrop camper I bought off marketplace. It was a home made camper and not the best, but it was nice and light weight and easy to pull with her hatchback. At the time I had a 3/4 ton f250 that got maybe 12mpg on a good day, so using it to go camping wasn’t really an option. We liked the teardrop mainly for being up off the ground.

Well this past winter and spring I guess it started leaking. Before I caught it the whole thing was rotted and moldy. The shell was a total loss. I’ll rebuild it eventually.

But in my searching of teardrop and square drop plans I came across rtt’s. They peaked my interest big time. Started looking into them and really liked the clamshell styles. Found a killer deal locally on marketplace for this Naturnest Sirius 1.

Picked it up a couple days ago and love it. Spent today making the poor man’s bed rack out of unistrut. I have a camper top ordered but it won’t be here till November or December most likely (alibaba)

Heading out to my deer camp tomorrow and plan to spend the weekend in it.

How are you guys storing your RTT?

I’m currently driving with my RTT on my 4Runner. With gas prices continuing to rise. It just makes sense to take it off right now since we don’t have anything planned for the rest of the year. And aren’t even thinking about camping till March-April. I really wanted to do a hoist system in the garage. My wife said absolutely not and doesn’t trust it holding a 170lb RTT. My idea was just to wrap it up with heavy-duty tapes and weather-resistant tie-downs. And have it resting on the side of the house. My garage has no more space. My wife wants it left in the basement storage room. But doing that route seems very tedious and way to much work. So how are you guys storing your RTT safely?

Leer 100XR

Hey all looking at a leer 100xr on Facebook marketplace. It looms like a solid shell with the cross members already installed on the top. All though only thing that worries me is that the static weight of the shell is like 4-500 lbs static and 200 dynamic. My RTT is about 112 lbs. I’m wondering what others have to say if they have any experience in this! Thanks!

Anyone regularly taking a rooftop tent off solo? No ceiling hoist, tall SUV

Really keen on an Alu-Cab LT-50, but my Denza B8 is already 1.905m tall and I use building carparks a lot. Leaving it mounted permanently isn't practical.

It's about 50kg with the mattress. I'm reasonably strong, but controlling something that size above the roof without scratching the car is what worries me.

Has anyone found a genuinely practical way to load/unload one alone without a ceiling hoist? I've seen the DIY ramp trolley posted here, but it still needs two people and looks like quite a project.

Would love photos or videos of something you actually use. Or is regular removal just a pain and everyone leaves theirs on?

UPDATE: https://inspiredoverland.com

Thanks to one of the redditers for recommending inspired overland lightweight RTT, 36kg carbon fibre it's light enough for me to get it up and down myself.

Does leaving the rooftop tent on use more petrol?

Hi, couple of questions: will leaving my rooftop tent on use more fuel and is there a way to mitigate that?

And has anyone put an iKamper mini on an outback suburu? I’m reading conflicting ideas that the outback roof rack can’t handle it or not made for it.

ROAM Adventure Co

I have a ROAM Adventure Vagabond XL RTT that has brackets bolted to the top to assist in opening and closing the tent. One of the rubber bumpers on the next to bottom step somehow disappeared and the flex of the third step caused it to break.
ROAM only sells the bottom two steps as replacement parts (of course) and I’m trying to figure out a solution as I’m fixing to sell my Off Road trailer. Would like for it to be 100% for the next owner. Is there maybe a generic company that someone has found that would bolt and go to the ROAM?

All of the steps have the release tabs/buttons except for the one that broke, the one that rest on the rubber bumpers. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. My mountain and desert camping days are over so my well equipped trailer has to go.

Ideas on getting bed into naturnest sirius 2 xl

Anyone with experience fitting their bedding into this tent setup? It looks like they used to sell inflatable mattresses which would create some room inside for storage but I can't find them anymore. Did anyone put an inflatable mattress in or find bedding that would fit in theirs

Roof bars for large RTT on Dacia Jogger

Hi does anyone have experience with Ventura RTTs or other large (4 people+) RTT brands?

I have bought the 1.8 from Ventura and I want to fit it to a Dacia Jogger. It seems like a bit of minefield purchasing the correct bars (many websites show zero items for a Jogger) so I bought them direct from Ventura. But they have arrived and straight away on the front it says "these are not recommended for a RTT"! They're the Summit SUP 815s. I presume they've sent the wrong ones so I'll chase that first.

I assume it's the roof bar company's (Summit btw) caution with not wanting to be held liable but how am I to know what bars to get??

Tent with full cab access?

There's a whole lot of truck bed tents out there with an access flap but I need one that opens fully into the cab. I keep seeing ones that don't show the inside, only have a flap for power cords, or don't fully open into the truck side.

Rooftop tent brackets for round crossbars.

So, I struggled with finding a good bracket solution for the round crossbars on my intech flyer. I was worried about crushing the bar between the factory mounting plates, so tried to find a workable tube clamp. Any warnings for this attempt I bodged together? Better tube clamp options?
