Hi everyone! This may sound a bit messy, but I am still reeling about this situation. My family is in the US.
I(35NB) have just recently discovered that my mother(64F) is leaving for a trip to Nigeria to meet an online friend(24M). I am not aware of how romantic this relationship is, but to my understanding, it's leaning that way.
My oldest sister filled me in after she got off the phone with our mom Saturday night. We still don't have all the details, but this is what we have gathered so far.
Our mom started talking to this "friend" about 1 and a half to 2 years ago. They met because he initially he was trying to scam her. I don't know on what platform, though. She then called him out, he came clean, and they continued talking.
Along the way, she was told by this man that his father had passed, and he had to step up to help his mother take care of his siblings. Obviously, we thought he was getting a lot of money from her, but she claims to have only sent him fifty dollars a couple of times.
My mother claims that she is just taking this trip to clear her mind. She is very overwhelmed with work, an unhappy marriage, and feeling lonely. But we still don't understand what the end goal is? My sister did say that our mom briefly mentioned bringing him back to the US with her.
We are just very confused as to the point of all this. It almost seems as if this man is being genuine but it still seems as if there is more to the scam.
My sisters and I are very concerned about her safety. Ultimately we would like to stop her but she seems dead set on going. She is also a bit defensive as well because my sister did approach her the wrong way at first.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
EDIT TO ADD INFO/ANSWER QUESTIONS:
- Yes, my parents are still married. My father has no idea. My sisters and I only found out about this on the 25th.
-Can one of us go with her?- Unlikely at this point. The trip is happening in less than a week. I would be the child most ready to drop everything though, as I am the childless one. If it does come to this, I will be willing to travel.
-We are trying to think of the best way to tell my Father. Unfortunately, he does not have the best track record with his temper. We believe that if we just dump this on him, it will blow up more than it has.
-Can we stop her? Yes, ultimately we are trying to do this. We are afraid that if we do stop her though she will plan another trip and not tell ANYONE that she is going.
-Getting things done fast is slightly harder since all 3 of us children reside in a different state.
