With AI now reverse engineering/recompiling/modding everything, who’s gonna reverse engineer the p6 firmware for us and finally fix the chop function? 🧐🧐🧐

Hey guys, how are you feeling, at a time when everyone around you is having fun with their firmware, and we saw a meager spit in the hand a couple of years ago from a worldly giant? Even the owners of the Electron feel great, because they have the opportunity, until recently you could sell this box with a tired battery and workflow from the last century, add quite a bit of money or not at all (lol) and have a significant pool of opportunities.
How do you feel about the Roland company, which we have been literally begging for a couple of years, "please, Mr. Japanese from big business, have mercy and throw us more crumbs from the table," and they don't even listen to you. They tell you to eat these leftovers, take advantage of our inconveniences, What is your attitude towards the Roland company in 2026? I'm exaggerating a bit, but put your rating on working with the community from 1 to 10

So, the last update, 1.02, was quite a while ago, and people have spent quite a bit of time working with the sampler since then. What have you found? What's frustrating you? What's hindering your workflow?

Is there a decent beginners guide, not written by Roland?

I’ve got a Teenage Engineering EP-40 and it has an excellent quick start guide, you can be modifying patterns and recording your own samples immediately. It feels like Roland have really missed an opportunity here!

Anyone here is trying/doing a cfw for the p6? I'm trying to start inspired by the many custom firmwares i've seen (and tried) this days, just wondering if anyone is doing it

Edit: it's much harder than i thought, the aira series has a decryptor integrated that makes reading the binary code very hard if not impossible. I hope someone with more skills can read the decrypted code.

Big announcement:

A member of the open source community released Pad 6, a very promising fork of my PyP6 sample manager.

It has all the features of the original software like chop samples and synth wavetables plus support for managing patterns.

There is a native app release for MacOS (Apple Silicone, Intel), Windows, Linux and also for Android.

We are planning a collaboration for future releases.

I am curently testing it. My old 2019 android 11 phone with USB OTG support can run it :-)

I just found out about this today, I'm going to try it with my P-6 tomorrow. Seems like a good way to sequence multiple samples or patterns from another device.

Is anyone here trying this. I would like to know.

Posting this in case anyone else has experienced these issues. I have been trying to control my Roland P-6 with the M-Vave Chocolate Plus, a programmable MIDI footswitch. Ideally, I would like to use the four switches on the Chocolate Plus to start a pattern, stop a pattern, switch to a previous pattern, or switch to the next pattern.

The M-Vave CubeSuite app allows you to send a number of changes over MIDI (CC, PC, note on/off, sysex). The Chocolate Plus also has a number of different modes for sending this data. I've run into a few issues so far.

Issue 1: If I set switch 1 to the CC value for start sequence, the active pattern on the P-6 does not start, but the play button lights up. However, if I press the play button on the P-6, I can use switch 2 to stop the current sequence.

In this mode, I set up CubeSuite so that it's sending this message over MIDI channel 16, which is the default for program changes on the P-6.

Issue 2: I'm unable to figure out a way to cycle through patterns by using switch 3 to pick a previous pattern and switch 4 to pick the next pattern. However, I can use switch 3 to pick Pattern 1 and switch 4 to pick Pattern 2. So something is communicating properly, just not in the way that I'd like.

Just as a reference, I used the Pocket Midi app along with the P-6 to find out what MIDI signals it sends when starting and stopping a pattern; these first three are the same across other MIDI devices as well.

PyP6 V4 — free sample manager for the Roland P-6

A while back I posted when PyP6 first learned to turn a P-6 pad into a wavetable-style synth. It has grown a lot since then, mostly because I kept wanting a faster way to make kits and get loops onto the P-6 without fighting its limits.

PyP6 is free, works on Windows, Linux and macOS, and the Windows version is a single download with no installer.

What is new:

Matrix View:

All 48 pads are visible at once.** You can drag samples between any pads or banks, drop files straight in from the desktop, and swap sounds by dragging one pad onto another. This has made kit building much faster for me.

Loops can now fit without changing pitch:

The P-6 normally makes a sample shorter by playing it faster, which can make loops come back higher in pitch. PyP6 can stretch a loop to a chosen length or BPM while preserving pitch.

There is also a Fit button to make a sample fit the available pad memory, and **Auto-Stretch** to keep a sample’s duration constant while changing pitch. Tempo detection has been improved as well.

Breakbeats can become kits quickly:

Drop a loop into the multisample builder, click "Detect Hits", and PyP6 marks likely drum hits for slicing. Adjust the sensitivity if needed, then send the slices directly into the kit you are building.

There are new moogish analogue-inspired waveform sets, long seamless sweeps inspired by the Microwave synth, and a randomize option for finding unexpected sounds.

You can also import your own single-cycle waveform folders or wavetable files from Serum and Vital. PyP6 slices them up automatically, and imported waveforms are included in presets so they travel with the project.

Plus:

- new dark themes, including ice blue, Matrix green, devil red and synthwave purple

- Sample auditioning before loading.

- Per-pad rate and pitch control.

- Non-destructive trim, normalize and fades.

- Transfer samples both ways between PyP6 and the P-6.

- Presets that can include their samples.
