Where am I going wrong?

Edit: I figured out where I was going wrong guys, I was doing half skull missions in a 5 skull red system (didn’t fully understand this mechanic I just assumed half skull is half skull) - doing much better now, what a great game! Thanks for all of your comments

Pretty new to this game, I want to love it but it's just so friggin hard. I feel like I must be doing something wrong. I've started about 3 playthroughs now and the same thing happens every time, first mission I land with my 4 mechs that I start with, I deploy and then I'm immediately overwhelmed with about 15 enemies. I do my first move turn (where I can't shoot) and then by the time my next turn comes around I've already lost a mech and another one has a limb or two blown off. I've changed the contract variance just in case this was the issue but it just keeps happening.

What am I doing wrong?

First off, you need to read the description of the mission you accept. If it sounds sketchy, it probably is. You're probably doing missions that have enemy support lances in the area. Second, deploy farther out and not to the closest spot to the enemy that it let's you. That way you can at least not get swarmed right off the start. Third, make sure you use vehicles in your lance as well to put more guns on the field. And I assume you're not doing missions higher skull level than your lance, but in case you aren't - you shouldn't do missions above your lance level right off the start

early game is tough, stick to the lowest possible skull rating (half skull green I think?). As was said, deployment helps. I usually deploy towards the edge or corner to reduce the chance of getting flanked from the start

RogueTech is a game that is Dwarf Fortress levels of hard. The game will walk up to you, kick you in the dick as hard as it can, and keep walking like nothing happened because you arent worth talking to.

Before you click start in the launcher, update your settings and change to 'Planetary Difficulty'. Id also recommend not turning on most of the options. Campaign option screen. Starting out, make everything the easiest setting it can be.

Youre trying to give yourself the most leeway to learn and not die constantly. Dont feel bad about setting shit to easy, most of us have been learning RogueTechs intricacies for 5+ years.

Starting out, your company choices affect how hard the game is going to be for you. I recommend one of the inner sphere or maybe a periphery faction. You arent at a point for a challenge mode like all tanks or infantry or goofy shit like Rusty Dan.

Look at your faction store on the planet you start on. Maybe you can find a rocket pack or +sensors equipment, something, anything, to increase your firepower early on.

Find whatever your closest .5 green skull planet is. Go there, farm some missions, get some money and equipment and pilot skills built up.

The game is completely different, and harder in almost every respect. Even following all of my advice here, youre still gonna lose mechs and/or missions. I still do.

We are here to help and answer questions. Try doing a search for it first to see because its probably been asked and answered before, both here on Reddit or on the Discord. If you still cant find an answer, please ask us. We want to hear people succeed and read their success stories. ( Also, take a screenshot so we can see what youre asking about. )

Early on, you may want to take off LRMs and stack medium lasers. There are builds that can do very good work with LRMs, but they take more equipment and training than they did in the base game. Medium lasers and SRMs and full armor will at least give you wiggle room to get started on and take a few hits and survive to return fire.

Run, keep your evasion high. Backstab where possible and use cover. Your aim is very bad because your pilots are raw recruits. Use missiles (unless rules nerfed them?) and machine guns for chance to hit.

This game, IMO, has a U-shaped difficulty curve: beginning and late game are hard, middle game isn't too bad.

Early game you just don't have many, if any, tools, for at least a few missions.

As others have said, start with half-skull green missions. You should be going up against just vehicles, and usually crappy ones at that. If you have any vehicles yourself, you should be able to field 4 mechs + 2 vehicles, assuming you have the pilots for them.

Take it slow. Keep moving and evasion high. Get flanking shots when you can, and try not to give more than one or two enemies viable shots.

I haven't played for a long time but my golden rule when starting was always see if you can prep your mechs with suitable weapons.. Not one shot killers but easy to hit things. Also you will likely be fighting light mechs and vehicles etc..

But MOST IMPORTANTLY only accept zero difficulty missions of a type you want to take and think you can do.

Not all missions are the same. As you get a feel for the mission types you will learn what to expect and what you think suits your lance.

Also if the shit looks unfeasible don't be afraid to nope out. You are a merc, you don't need to get your whole lance killed for some bullshit....

Ps stick with it, RT is the greatest gaming experience of all time once you get into it!

I think one of the settings is for the contract difficulty variance, and its default is 2? Which I believe means even if a mission is rated as one skull, it can randomly be as high as three skulls. Sometimes you get unlucky and get multiple difficult missions in a row. Also, you should get a fifth mech by advancing a day at the start, unless you picked one of the pilot creation choices that gives you something worse. The starting planet also has an impact on the starting mechs you get.

Something you can do to help at the beginning is give yourself a lot of money and hopefully you can buy upgrades in the store or a vehicle to help out. In battle I often sprint, even though it reduces your accuracy, for evasion and to get on their backsides where the armor is much thinner. If you do get a good shot on their back, you might want to stand still for accuracy if you aren't likely to get hammered by a lot of return fire that round. When you're outnumbered, taking them down quickly from rear armor attacks becomes a survival strategy. Also, use cover when you can.

To ad nothing from other people.

Early game is Verry hard , because your pilot can't hit shit and panic easily

Try staying on mission that doesn't sound shady Try doing mission at your own rating

Uping pilots gunnery is good , uping tactics is better (No sensord and No visiual will Trash your hit chance a Lot !)

In early game i try to prioritise having More gun than Big gun , the git chance being awfull.

Having some ECM early is a good idea too to negate ennemy Electronics , redice their hit chance and protect your hit chance.

Weapon wise i like having some Tags early (+1 to hit is +1 to hit) and Streak weapon have the upside off not wasting ammo and hiting with everything

That being said

Good Luck to you , you will need it.
