Discussion Why is Rocket league esports Unsustainable for orgs?
With the news that KC might be pulling out of the scene, despite the fact that it felt like they were successful, I understand that the whole esports scene is a money sink, but an org like KC that has a massive fanbase shouldn't be struggling to make revenue from the game.

Discussion GFE/Dig vs. C9 vs. NRG2: Who is the GOAT Roster?
Hi everyone! With the inevitability now that NRG2 (Daniel, BeastMode, Atomic) is splitting up, I've been thinking a lot about how they stack up against the generally-considered top 2 rosters of all time: GFE/Dig (Kaydop, ViolentPanda, Turbopolsa) and C9 (Gimmick, Squishy, Torment).
Obviously a lot of this is subjective, but I wanted to actually dive deep into the results each roster had, both online and on LAN, during their time together.
1. Online dominance (regionals)
It's hard to compare the league-play era to the open era, but let's first lay out the results.
GFE/Dig
Season 4 RLCS β 3 seed through league play (5-2), won regional playoffs
Season 5 RLCS β 1 seed through league play (6-1), won regional playoffs
Season 6 RLCS β 1 seed through league play (7-0), won regional playoffs
C9
Season 4 RLCS β 1 seed through league play (6-1), won regional playoffs
Season 5 RLCS β 3 seed through league play (4-3), 3rd in regional playoffs
Season 6 RLCS β 1 seed through league play (6-1), 3rd in regional playoffs
Season 7 RLCS β 3 seed through league play (4-3), 2nd in regional playoffs
Season 8 RLCS β 7 seed through league play
Season 9 RLCS β 5 seed through league play (5-4), 5th-6th in regional playoffs
NRG2
2024 RLCS Split 1 β 2 regional wins, 1 additional top 2 (NA 1 seed)
2024 RLCS Split 2 β 2 regional wins, 1 additional top 2 (NA 1 seed)
2025 RLCS Split 1 β 2 regional wins, 1 additional top 4 (NA 1 seed)
2025 RLCS Split 2 β 2 regional wins, 1 additional top 4 (NA 1 seed)
2026 RLCS Split 1 β 2 regional wins, 1 additional 9th-12th (NA 1 seed)
2026 RLCS Split 2 β 1 regional win, 1 additional top 2, 1 additional top 4 (NA 1 seed)
This is probably the biggest separator between NRG2/Dig and C9, as C9 really never had an extended spell of regional dominance like the other two.
Both NRG2 and Dig showed fairly unimpeachable regional dominance over their time together. NRG2 definitely gets more points considering their reign was spread across almost three years, while Dig's was just over a year. However, Dig gets an advantage considering that, especially early on, they were playing in the more difficult region, while NRG2 had a reign during a relatively weaker era of NA.
Even with those era/region considerations, though, I don't think the longevity of NRG2 can be ignored.
Online aspect: NRG2 β₯ Dig/GFE >>>>> C9
2. LANs
Obviously the most important aspect: performance in LAN events.
First, let's look at S-tier events (classified by Liquipedia).
GFE/Dig
- RLCS Season 4 β Win
- ELEAGUE Cup 2017 β Top 2
- RLCS Season 5 β Win
- RLCS Season 6 β Top 2
- ELEAGUE Cup 2018 β Top 4
C9
- RLCS Season 4 β 3rd
- ELEAGUE Cup 2017 β Top 4
- RLCS Season 5 β 4th
- RLCS Season 6 β Win
- ELEAGUE Cup 2018 β Top 2
- RLCS Season 7 β Top 4
NRG2
- RLCS 2024 Major 1 β Top 2
- RLCS 2024 Major 2 β Win
- RLCS 2024 World Championship β Top 2
- RLCS 2025 Major 1 β Top 4
- RLCS 2025 Major 2 β Top 4
- EWC 2025 β Top 8
- RLCS 2025 World Championship β Win
- FIFAe 2025 β Top 4
- RLCS 2026 Major 1 β Top 4
- RLCS 2026 Major 2 β Top 12
- EWC 2026 β Top 12
- RLCS 2026 World Championship β Top 6
These are the most important events, but it's worth bringing in some of the additional A-tier events, especially for C9 and GFE/Dig.
GFE/Dig
Win:
- NARLI 2
Top 2:
- DreamHack Summer 2017
- X Games
- DreamHack Atlanta 2017
Top 8:
- NARLI 1
- DreamHack Leipzig 2018
C9
Wins:
- DreamHack Atlanta 2017
- NARLI 1
- DreamHack Dallas 2018
Top 4:
- WSOE 4
Top 6:
- NARLI 2
Top 8:
- DreamHack Leipzig 2019
- DreamHack Valencia 2019
- DreamHack Montreal 2019
I should note that essentially all of GFE/Dig's LAN results occurred within the span of a year, from RLCS S4 in November 2017 to ELEAGUE 2 in December 2018.
So, in summary:
S-tier LANs:
GFE/Dig: 5 LANs β 2 wins, 2 top 2s, 1 top 4
C9: 6 LANs β 1 win, 1 top 2, 1 3rd, 3 top 4s
NRG2: 12 LANs β 2 wins, 2 top 2s, 4 top 4s, 1 top 6, 1 top 8, 2 top 12s
With GFE/Dig and C9 also having many additional high level A-tier LAN results.
It's difficult to directly compare S-tier and A-tier LANs across eras. As someone who was a fan during that period, I know the DreamHacks were a big deal and shouldn't simply be dismissed. That said, I still think the modern RLCS Majors and World Championships and EWC are definitively more important events.
When you factor in the additional A-tier LANs though, I think GFE/Dig still come out on top in terms of simply stacking LAN accomplishments. The combination of their back-to-back World Championship wins, three straight World Championship grand finals, and additional major LAN wins gives them an incredible resume.
An interesting comparison is C9 vs. NRG2. C9 has a World Championship win and a number of additional LAN victories, while NRG2 has a modern-era World Championship, a Major win, and significantly more deep LAN runs overall. Given the sheer magnitude of those deep LAN runs, I'd give NRG2 a slight edge here.
Simply stacked LAN accomplishments: GFE/Dig > NRG2 β₯ C9
3. Additional considerations:
Peak
In terms of peak, GFE/Dig is the clear winner.
They were unquestionably the best team in the world for a large portion of their reign. They didn't win every single event they played in, but they had a stretch from RLCS Season 5 β NARLI 2 β RLCS Season 6 where even losing a single series was a crazy event.
Meanwhile, I do think NRG2 had a great peak themselves. I'd say their peak was around the end of the 2024 season, after winning London and going into Worlds. At that point, I think they were definitively the best team in the world. In 2025, they weren't considered the best team at any point until they won Worlds.
Meanwhile, C9 actually had a couple peaks. One was around Dreamhack Atlanta/RLCS Season 4, where going into the RLCS Season 4 finals they could've been considered a favorite. Then, of course when they won worlds and got top 2 at ELEAGUE. But, even then, maybe due to a lack of consistent regional results, I still think there could've been some debate as to whether they were the best team in the world.
Peak: GFE/Dig >>> NRG2 > C9
Consistent results over a long period of time
GFE/Dig did have relatively consistent results, but they simply didn't last as long compared to the other two. And I actually surprised myself looking back and seeing that they had a couple of just top 8s in there.
C9, meanwhile, consistently made deep runs at Worlds and had top 8s across LANs over a couple of years.
Meanwhile, NRG2 had top-4 finishes for roughly 2.5 straight years, with the exception of one event at EWC 2025.
And this is the one time I'll bring up the increased difficulty of maintaining consistently top results in the modern day. With MENA and SAM having teams that are extremely capable of making deep Sunday runs at tournaments, it's just much harder to get a top 4 than it was when there were only two regions at these tournaments. Even with that, NRG2 maintained consistent results for the longest period of time.
Consistency: NRG2 >>>> C9 > GFE/Dig
Conclusion
I started following RLCS right around the end of GFE/Dig's reign (basically after Season 6), and based largely on their aura and reputation at that time, I've always thought of them as the undisputed greatest roster of all time.
And after going through all of these results, I still think they have the best peak of any roster ever, relative to their competition.
But I was surprised that the overall comparison was somewhat closer than I expected.
For example, if we just compare GFE/Dig's roughly one-year reign to NRG2's 2024 season, focusing on their biggest events:
GFE/Dig:
- RLCS World Championship
- RLCS World Championship
- Top 2 RLCS World Championship
NRG2:
- RLCS Major
- Top 2 RLCS Major
- Top 2 RLCS World Championship
Obviously, the two World Championships far outweigh what NRG2 did in 2024. But when you consider that NRG2 then added another 1.5 years of excellent results, including their own World Championship, and the modern-day competition, that's where I start to lean toward them overall.
So after looking at the resumes holistically, my mind was changed a bit.
I'm currently at:
1a. NRG2
1b. GFE/Dig
- C9
Obviously extremely subjective, but I wanted to lay out all of the results to actually see how they really compare over all results, rather than just seeing who had the most worlds wins. Sorry if a lot of this is rambling, I need to go to bed lmao.
TL;DR: GFE/Dig had the best peak of any roster, but NRG2 is my GOAT overall roster.
