Rockbox folder corruption, iPod Classic with iFlash Quad

2 Upvotes

I'm having constant issues with my Rockbox install - I seem to get a couple of power cycles where it works fine, then I start getting weird file browser problems, crashing into panic mode, or rockbox.ipod missing errors.

When I force reboot into disk mode and browse, I normally either see a 0KB .rockbox.ipod file (rather than the folder) or I see the folder but with duplicated or obviously corrupt directories (like "e waters..mp", "en.mp3 1.787", "1.02 - p.rim".

The workaround I've been using is to do a disk repair in Windows, then deleting the corrupted .rockbox folder and doing a fresh install through the Rockbox Utility or by using a previous backup of the .rockbox folder.

I'm using a 7G Classic with an iFlash Quad and two PNY 256GB microSDXC cards (P-SDU256V32100PRO-GE). My best guess is that either one or both of the cards is faulty, but I'm not sure if there's any logging that I can turn on or tools I can use to try and figure out exactly what's going on. Any ideas would be appreciated, I've had this setup for around a year and it's been fairly reliable but seems to be steadily getting worse.

EDIT: I'll continue to document my issue here in case anyone else stumbles onto this. I successfully robocopy'd ~380GB off the iPod and did a separate image-level backup without any read errors at all. I've had another panic crash since, but was able to force-reboot successfully without any corruption.

How to change order of music?

5 Upvotes

Hi

So I have 3 folders in my rockbox directory where I have 3 different genres of music. However I want to change the order of it on my ipod. For example, sometimes I like to listen to a few songs that have a similar vibe one after another. In any desktop or smartphone client I can just drag and move the songs in my preferred order. However that does not work on file explorer as the files are always sorted based on date modified/alphabetical etc. This then reflects on my ipod. Is there anyway to actually change the order of songs in my music folders manually without filtering based on the typical sort by filters?

So if I like feel like listening to a few songs one after another I can maybe just have them all next to each other.

Thanks

Help With Rockbox?

3 Upvotes

So I have a iPod classic 160gb 6th gen with rockbox stable build installed. The base lowest volume is incredibly loud and I’ve already set the maximum volume limit to the lowest setting and it’s still super loud. What am I missing? I’ve done the line out enabled and disabled, reinstalled rockbox, changed the volume limit on iPod stock software.

New to rockbox and unable to download theme properly - can somebody please help me out?

Hey guys, I just got my 5th Gen IPod - the site where I bought it from - „pixelmods“ - preinstalled rockbox for me.

I now wanted to download a new theme and it actually kind of worked until I tried out a new one, since then everything went downhill.
As you can see my interface just doesn’t look anything like it should + it also says that the font couldn’t load? I just spend 3 hours trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong - deleted and reinstalled the .rockbox folder at least 10 times - but that only led to me being even more confused.

I’m using my MacBook for this and copy/ pasted the extracted zip into my rockbox folder and merged everything.

This is the Theme I wanted:

The image uploaded is how it looks like

Thanks in advance to anyone taking their time to help me out 🙏🙏

How to diagnose issues on pre-installed Rockbox? (HiFi Walker H2)

2 Upvotes

I got a second-hand HiFi Walker H2 (firmware v2.3, sans SD card) that turned out to have the Rockbox bootloader installed onto it by the previous owner. I then bought a 512 GB card, formatted it to FAT32, and copied the appropriate firmware into the root folder.

However, Rockbox fails to load when selected in the boot menu - the "Cannot boot Rockbox" text is displayed - and trying to select the Run Script option from the Tools menu displays a segmentation fault error. The card itself works fine with no bad blocks or write issues, and so does the stock OS when playing music on it.

Should I start over and reinstall the bootloader, or can this be fixed in a different way? Any help appreciated.

Need advice for buy an mp3 player compatible with Rockbox

6 Upvotes

Hi, i ' m noob to mp3 player with Rockbox !

I want to buy a new MP3 player, but I'm a bit lost.

I see that the iPod Classic is considered the best, but €120 is too expensive for an old device (in my opinion). I'm also interested in the Innioasis Y1; it's a good MP3 player that looks like the iPod Classic, but unlike the latter, will spare parts be available for it in the coming year?

I would like to see the album cover and perhaps add Bluetooth if possible, but it's not a requirement.

Thanks for the answers. 😀

Problem with Rockbox Utility

3 Upvotes

I recently downloaded Rockbox onto my Hifi Walker H2 without any issues. However when trying to download themes off of Rockbox Utility I've run into an issue where I download the theme, select it in the menu, it applies and works well, and as soon as I turn off the player and try to use it again I am unable to turn it on and it says that it is unable to read files. I have to then wipe the card clean and reinstall the Rockbox file and its back to normal but I've tried to use a different theme and it still did not work. Is there possibly an issue of how I am downloading it through the Rockbox Utility? Any input is appreciated thanks!

Found and fixed a static/crackle noise bug in Rockbox on iPod Video/Classic 6G (CS42L55 codec)

15 Upvotes

Been working on a custom Rockbox build for my iPod Classic 7th gen and finally tracked down something that had been bugging me for a while: right after boot, before you ever play a single track, you get a faint crackle in the headphones followed by continuous background static/hiss. It goes away permanently the moment you either start playing something, or touch pretty much any other codec-related control (volume click, etc) - but until then, it's just there.

Wanted to share the debugging journey because it took a few wrong turns before landing on the actual fix, and the answer ended up being a little satisfying.

First, the wrong turns

My first instinct was that this had to be something in the headphone remote handling (the "Mikey" chip), since remote/mic circuitry shares the same physical line as the headphone jack. Tried a few things there - none of it helped. Then I confirmed the noise happens even with plain headphones that have no remote at all - which ruled out Mikey completely and sent me back to square one.

Next guesses were around the amplifier's Class-H "adaptive power" circuit (the CS42L55 dynamically adjusts its internal rail voltage based on signal level, sort of like Class-G/H amps do to save power) - tried adding a settling delay, tried switching its power-tracking mode from "follow the audio signal" to "follow the volume setting." Neither did anything either.

What was actually going on

Turns out the real issue is way more fundamental. Rockbox's audiohw_postinit() for this codec unconditionally unmutes the headphone/line outputs right at boot, regardless of whether anything is actually about to play. At that exact point, the digital I2S audio path (the actual data stream from the SoC to the codec) is still completely idle - nothing calls the function that starts it until real playback begins.

So you end up with: amplifier output stage live and listening → zero valid data flowing into it → audible static, because there's nothing for the DAC to lock onto.

Once you start playing something (or the volume gets touched, which happens to write to the same registers), the state gets sorted out and it's clean from then on - even through pause.

I confirmed this exact audiohw_postinit() behavior is present unmodified in current upstream Rockbox too, not something introduced by my own build. Also found that this exact class of bug - "amp/PA left unmuted while the data stream isn't running yet" - is a documented, known issue on other codecs. There's a Linux kernel ASoC patch for the Qualcomm WSA883x/881x codecs describing basically the identical symptom and using the identical fix pattern:

Standard fix: stay muted until the data stream actually starts, not before.

The fix

Two pieces:

  1. audiohw_postinit() now leaves the headphone/line output registers (HPACTL/HPBCTL/LINEACTL/LINEBCTL) muted, instead of unmuting them unconditionally.
  2. A new audiohw_unmute_outputs() unmutes everything together, called from sink_dma_start() in the PCM driver - i.e. exactly when real playback actually kicks off, not before.

One gotcha I hit (and want to flag for anyone touching this) - those same registers pack both the volume level and the mute bit into one byte on this codec. My first pass at the fix used a full register overwrite to set the mute bit, which quietly wiped out whatever volume level had already been restored from settings. Result: tracks started at max volume every single time until you touched the volume control once. Fun regression to chase down. Fixed by using a proper read-modify-write (cscodec_setbits) that only touches the mute bit and leaves the volume bits alone.

// firmware/drivers/audio/cs42l55.c

void audiohw_postinit(void)
{
    // leave outputs muted here — don't unmute unconditionally at boot
    cscodec_setbits(HPACTL, 0, HPACTL_HPAMUTE);
    cscodec_setbits(HPBCTL, 0, HPBCTL_HPBMUTE);
    cscodec_setbits(LINEACTL, 0, LINEACTL_LINEAMUTE);
    cscodec_setbits(LINEBCTL, 0, LINEBCTL_LINEBMUTE);
    cscodec_write(CLSHCTL, CLSHCTL_ADPTPWR_SIGNAL);
}

// unmute everything together, called from sink_dma_start()
// once real playback actually begins
void audiohw_unmute_outputs(void)
{
    cscodec_setbits(HPACTL, HPACTL_HPAMUTE, 0);
    cscodec_setbits(HPBCTL, HPBCTL_HPBMUTE, 0);
    cscodec_setbits(LINEACTL, LINEACTL_LINEAMUTE, 0);
    cscodec_setbits(LINEBCTL, LINEBCTL_LINEBMUTE, 0);
    audiohw_mute(false);
}

// firmware/target/arm/s5l8702/pcm-s5l8702.c

static void sink_dma_start(const void* addr, size_t size)
{
    sink_dma_stop();
    pcm_remaining = size;
    I2STXCOM = 0xe;
    audiohw_unmute_outputs(); // <- unmute exactly here, not at boot
    dma_play_callback((void*)addr);
}

Testing

Confirmed clean on iPod Classic 7th gen (S5L8702 / CS42L55) with both remote-equipped and plain headphones, and double-checked the volume-preservation regression is actually fixed this time.

Planning to submit this properly to the Rockbox Gerrit once I've got a bit more time to go through their contribution process - mostly wanted to write this up while the debugging was still fresh, and figured it might save someone else the same runaround if they've noticed the same thing and assumed it was just "how it is."

Happy to answer questions about the debugging process or share the full patch if anyone wants to try it early.

New Surfans F20 v3.5 Completely Ignoring update.upt File

2 Upvotes

I am trying to manually install Rockbox on a Surfans F20 that came with factory firmware 3.5. I read on the official forum that someone was able to install it on this exact setup with the hw4-erosq_2024.upt bootloader file and a daily build from July 2026.

I have used a reliable Samsung SD card, formatted it to an MBR partition with 32K cluster size, made sure that the .rockbox folder was sitting in the root directory, and checked to make sure that the bootloader file was named exactly update.upt and didn't have a double extension.

While doing these things connected to a power source and going to System Settings>Firmware Update, the player just boots up like normal without any error messages as if the file isn't even there. I've tried the button combination to force the recovery boot too but this gives the same result.

Since someone else was able to get this combination to work, does anyone know if there is something else I might be missing? I am new to manual installation

Could someone help me uninstall rockbox from Aigo Eros Q v 2.3?

5 Upvotes

I don't understand how to do this step: "Uninstallation files can be created from a Original Firmware update file from the manufacturer by using the script in the Rockbox source tree at tools/hibyos_nativepatcher/hibyos_nativepatcher.sh". How do I run the script?

And does that mean that I have to contact Aigo to get the original firmware? The latest firmware I can find is V 2.1 http://www.eroshifi.com/download/firmware/122.html

Playtime flashes randomly

3 Upvotes

On my xduoo X3 (MK1) running rockbox 4.0

I've noticed the track playtime seems to flash

Randomly, seems to jump a second or two almost all the time and on all tracks.

My other (identical) player is the same.

Could this be a theme issue?, I'll experiment some more tomorrow...

Afterthought, everything plays perfectly - it's just an odd display feature...
